@Kevtb87 agreed man my friend told me to read. this i spent the next few hours in shock because he told me this happened to the author. i was seriously freaked out, and i told the story to my friend somberly and we both agreed that it was completely fucked up. but it just shows you that its all about perspective. with the setting these people were in, they found it funny. when i read it alone, it was a gross, horrifying, depressing collection of stories of how one mistake ruined someones life
hearing it read out is so different from reading it yourself. I think I understand why some people faint now. imagine if you were at one of these readings with your partner, or God forbid, your mother or your son. how nauseating would that be? knowing that they are listening to this stuff. the images going through their heads.
this kind of stuff is not meant to be spoken in public. it's just wrong. lol
@GregThaVeg You are right, I haven't read this book. Although I do know that those are jokes that Chuck was using, and clearly those are to keep the reader/audience with him in the face of such dark circumstances involving these "common items". The dispute isn't the carrot, nor the candle wax, nor pools, and how fear may be derived from these everyday things, but it is that the jokes are there to keep the audience from feeling alienated, and to supply them a catharsis from which to move on from.
@aleji0 i see how some would see it as jokes but i see it as forshadowing and the part about the lawyer; they didn't even have enough info to understand.
i bascially just mad that they took the chances for a fainting and thats what i want. if it's not hell they aint happy and i'm not happy.
@aleji0 I can understand Gred's issue with people laughing. when I first read it alone I never got a laugh out loud vibe from it. it was a sick, twisted horror story, with some dark humour. I smirked here and there. but grimaced alot more.
so I'm surprised hearing how much people laughed out loud at it. I guess it's a release. hearing it read out to a room of people is a very different experience than reading it quietly on your own.
I would imagine the horror the guy in the pool experiences,upon the realisation of what has occurred, is on the same intensity as the dude from "GlassAss".
I love this. 23 people passed out during this! i don't think i could ever pass out from seeing or hearing something gross. i was eating lunch while i read this story the first time. its not that bad.
I want to be Chuck Palaniuk so badly when I grow up...

wtf this is not a laughing story the crowd is totally taking away from the effect.

@GregThaVeg Chuck must really hate how they laugh at his constant one liners. Laughter really detracts from funny stories huh?
aleji0 1 year ago
@aleji0
so you're saying that laughter doesn;t take the effect away from a story that is supposed to make you uneasy?
have you read the book? the point was to give fear to common items.
