  • Its better if Isayas transfer power now. If he goes to war and let civil war ravage the country, I think the country will split up in small parts. The first ones to go are the Afar and the Kunama, both of which have affinity to Ethiopia. The Ethiopians will not blink the assimilate these tribe into the Ethiopian constitution to gain sea access.

  • @09Factual The preferred method of the Eritrean government is to conscript students into national service straight from school, unless they are continuing higher education. The final year of secondary school was moved to Sawa military camp in 2003. This 12th grade takes place only in Sawa, under military authority, and incorporating military training. Although many 12th grade students are 18 years old some are older because they take longer to finish high school.

  • hence its collective punishment that doesn’t discriminate between men, women and children or between the guilty and innocent. In this particular round-up (one of many), many families that had a member that had joined the Kunama movement was targeted indiscriminately. Hundreds of them were rounded up and detained.

  • We know that thousands of Kunamas have crossed to Tigray since the war to escape Shaebia’s wrath. Ever since, there has been a festering armed resistance in that area. Shaebia’s fear is that this corridor will serve as a conduit of armed sabotage that could potentially derail the mining prospects at Bisha. For Shaebia, an organization that cannot live with any uncertainty, it is essential that it drains the sea to catch the fish;

  • The all-out assault on the Kunama people follows this course of the well-oiled conveyor belt of death. It starts in the most fertile corridor of Gash, where the most populated Kunama villages are to be found. According to Shaebia, this corridor has to be “pacified” by any means necessary, not only because its rear end touches Tigray but also because its opposite end touches the land of the Baria ethnic group, where the Bisha mining area is found.

  • In Asmara, the analysis probably had little credibility. Here, the word about the popular revolutions in Egypt and Libya has spread, while in the Afar east of Eritrea, news of the uprising in neighbouring Djibouti - also dominated by the Afar people - is an issue of wide discussion.

  • Especially, the Eritrean Ministry held, "the US has been employing various ploys and conspiracies over the past half century to paralyse the Egyptian leadership." Faced by such a "neo-colonial" situation, the people of Egypt had rioted, to restore the Nasser revolution, Eritrean were informed.

  • Following the Egyptian revolution, which could not be kept secret in Eritrea, event the Asmara Ministry of Information felt obliged to provide an analysis. In a large series, published through the Ministry's 'Shabait' website, one could read how the Egyptian revolution of - the one by Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1952 - had been betrayed over the years.

  • Eritrea has censored all news about the popular unrest in North Africa and neighbouring Djibouti. Only the exiled opposition talks about revolution. Eritrean sources told CPJ, however, that satellite dishes in the capital Asmara's rooftops allowed people to follow the unfolding events through media such as 'Al Jazeera'. But they do it at great risk, as the Eritrean government has agents all over the city, spying on citizens that could have dissident viewpoints.

Using regionalism as a card against progressive fighters in 1973, 1976 and 1978, many progressive fighters were physically eliminated by the EPLF leaders between 1973-1980. Regarding this, Teklay Aden, an EPLF security chief who defected to the Ethiopian regime in 1981, revealed that three thousand fighters were physically liquidated by the Front between 1973 and the time of his defection 1980.

  • The four children of Mr. Petros Solomon and Ms. Aster Yohannes were, with the assistance of a family member and smugglers, attempting to escape when they were confronted by the Eritrean Navy. There was a shoot out and a smuggler and a member of the Eritrean Navy were killed.

  • The Eritrean regime has taken a series of draconian measures to contain the massive migration of the youth who are leaving the country to neighboring Sudan and Ethiopia in record numbers. The regime's punitive measures include punishing the entire family whenever a conscript (or a conscription-eligible individual) leaves the country (50,000 nkf per child or 12 months of prison term) as well as a shoot-to-kill policy of interdiction.

  • "G-15" is shorthand for "Group of 15"-- the monicker for the senior party members (parliamentarians, army officers, cabinet members, etc) who, in the wake of the 2000 Eritrea-Ethiopia war, addressed an open letter to President Isaias Afwerki demanding power devolution and reform. All except for 4 were arrested, without charges or a day in court of law, in September 2001 and remain in detention. A couple have, according to credible sources, died in prison.

  • Gedab News has learned that Eritrean border security have shot at the family* of a "G-15" member.

The family of four was, with the help of smugglers, trying to evade border patrol and cross to neighboring Sudan when they were shot at by the officers.

Gedab News is in the process of confirming who, if any, successfully crossed the border and who, if any, were detained by the security officers and who, if any, were killed.

  • Intolerance to dissident: Those who make the distinction between Shaebia and PFDJ mark the defining moment for this distinction to be the squashing of the G-15 dissent. They forget that what has remained invariant throughout its existence as Shaebia/PFDJ is its ability to devour its dissenters – Menqae, Yemin, Falul and now G-15. What they see as an exception is in fact one instance of a well-established pattern.

Ethiopia is facing a new famine as drought and rising food prices threaten starvation for 4.5 million children, aid agencies warned. "We had nothing to eat after the corn crop failed," said Gerima Hagos from Tigray, one of the mothers at the centre. "I am telling you our story because they say you will listen. My stomach is hungry. And my baby is sick. We need help."

  • @BahreNeGash Eritrea is also the most malnourished in the world, only a little better, it is said, than war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to a UN status report. Seven of every ten Eritreans are reportedly undernourished.

  • @BahreNeGash Twenty-nine countries still have levels of hunger that are "extremely alarming" or "alarming." All countries with "extremely alarming" hunger statistics - Burundi, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Eritrea - are in Sub- Saharan Africa.

The regions of highest hunger are South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, with GHI scores of 22.9 and 21.7 respectively.

  • 5.Halewa sewra: the security apparatus that has spread its tentacles all over Eritrea now is the exact replica of the Halewa Sewra of the past. The culture of suspicion, lack of rule of law, intimidation, detention, torture and killings that are going on now have been perfected in mieda. After the border crisis, Shaebia changed its gears to its coercive past without a glitch to retrieve all its mechanism of terror, even to the minutest detail of the design of its underground dungeons.

  • A culture of violence: All the confrontations that independent Eritrea has been experiencing – within and without – are the direct extension of Shaebia’s confrontational past. This is a nation that went to war with all its neighbors – Yemen, Djibouti, Sudan and Ethiopia – within seven years of its birth. And if we go back to the mieda past, we won’t find even a single case where it resolved a festering issue with a peaceful means, be it within itself or without – Jebha, Ethiopia, etc.

  • Anti-intellectualism: The anti-intellectualism that has been causing havoc to the educational system in Eritrea is the direct result of the lethal anti-intellectualism that identified Shaebia from its formative years when it started its witch-hunt against students, in general, and university students, in particular. Throughout its existence in mieda, it not only killed the entire intellectual climate, it left no stones unturned to squash any kind of dissent, even of the mildest type.

By the late 1970s the number of ELF forces had dropped to as low as 7,000 while the EPLF could count on 30, 000 liberators. He adds that the EPLF leaders restored the old argument that Eritrea could not support more than one liberation front. This was when they realised that the ELF was weak, exploiting the ELF military weakness and internal crises they declared war on the ELF which was one of the worst crime of the EPLF leaders in the history of the armed struggle.

Self reliance: This misguided policy that has brought havoc to the economy of the nation has its roots in its immediate mieda predecessor: bistifrina. This is the main cause for the forced labor that has enslaved a whole generation, for the mass exodus that has emptied towns and cities across Eritrea and for the mass starvation that is going on right now in Eritrea.

  • Eritrea: Of all the countries, it was picked out to become the first colony of a newly created Italy and then of fascist Italian hordes who never thought it improper to change alliances when they saw it fit. They treated Eritreans as cannon fodder and took them by train and warships to fight against other downtrodden Africans like them. And when they left, they said arrivederci! And never cared to see how the country fared after them. (((LoL)))

  • One day I asked an Italian officer in the Embassy why the Italians in general never seemed to bother at all about Eritrean independence all throughout the armed struggle for liberation. His answer was that post-Fascist Italy was not responsible for anything that took place during the Fascist regime that meddled with Eritrea. The meaning is that if Eritrea needed any help, it had to ask Mussolini and his followers by raising them from the grave. (((LoL)))

Thanks to our as well as the world history, we are well aware of your evil doings. So please do us a favor and preach your BS to others who can buy it.

  • @xEriPunkPrincessx

Nevertheless, any realist Eritrean can see that. It makes me laugh when Eritreans act as if nothing is wrong back home. Ethiopians are the worst when it comes to depicting our country as heavenly when in fact our situation is horrendous and probably worse than Eritrea.

  • @xEriPunkPrincessx

I think your comment was intended to me. I am about as well-versed & knowledgeable about Eritrea as any Eritrean. Afewerki was a man I admired for quite some time for his resilience against Western powers, and his refusal to fall prey to their imperialistic ways. With that said, his time is up. There is no freedom of press, forced military enrollment for all its citizens, rampant starvation, all highlight a myriad of problems in which many Eritreans are fleeing in droves.

  • @09Factual

What does Ethiopia have to do with the discussion? I merely gave my opinion on the topic at hand, Eritrea. Unlike you, I have no animosity towards my neighbors in the Horn of Africa, and I wish nothing but the best for Eritrea & the region.

  • This is not to say the Eritrean regime is innocent and everything is hunky dory in Eritrea, far from it. But the report here does not even come close to scratching the surface of what's wrong with Eritrea's situation. The report does not in one single instance independently question the United States government's substantial role in Eritrea's situation. How could they? It is after all their contractor:)

  • This report by the "free press" is ironically as inaccurate and as orchestrated as a despotic regime's propoganda reel:) You have here a combination of the ego of the "journalists" and "human rights activist" exaggerating their expertise and fabricating facts for dramatic effect. With that you have the main agenda of this report: to portray the point of view of the government who paid for it (United States)under the veneer of "truth from the free and independent press Al Jazeera":-)

  • I have been living in Eritrea until recently but this video doesnt give the right image of Eritrea. I think it is meant to serve the agenda of western countries, to depict eritrea as an evil and dangerous country. Lol it is funny when somebody tries to tell about ur own Country. Please dont fall for this video which is completely false and have a distorted image.

  • This video is so delusional with lots of wrong information, I really do feel sorry for the people that watch shows like this and base their thoughts of an issue on that. Listen to both sides of the story, read the history, try to understand why the people and government are the way they are now THEN you can make your own decisions on what you think of the situation.

  • The truth about Eritrea is slowly coming to light. My heart goes out to all Eritreans stuck under extreme conditions. Eritreans who deny the severity of the situation are too prideful to accept reality.

  • @EthioParodist the irony the truth is what ever issues eritrea has since its independence in 1993 its 400 years worst in ethiopia control by 5 % tigray

  • @09Factual; My last comment on this video was almost a year ago. It´s realy very very odd some eritreans like you are misusing this site still to divide the indivisible Habeshas.Wether you accept it or not by all terms and definations you can not change the facts on the ground.Eritrea & Ethiopia are absolutely one-AT LEAST THEY SHOULD & CAN BE THE BEST NEIGHBOURS IN THE WORLD.your animousity propaganda brings nothig good except taking you & your friends down to hell.CALM DOWN TO COMPROMISE.

  • This is a classic video that shows how horribly Eritreans are misunderstood. After 30 yrs of war, another border war with 150thousand people dead and one third of the country destroyed, they tell us we are "paranoid"!!! This journalist told us that little was done to rebuilt Massawa that was totally destroyed during the war, and shows a palace that was left untouched as a museum. this is the reason why we will never trust others but only Eritreans.
