You can tune it however you want, he is in some kind of open tuning but it is arranged like a normal 6 string guitar so you can just tune it normal and it will just be a guitar that sounds like a sitar
That was awesome, I can't afford one of those, but I'm thinking of fitting something to the pickguard that will clip the strings so i can get some sort of sound like that
To be balanced... nothing beats traditional East Indian Sitar. On one side of the coin, this can be considered "derivative" as some listeners are pointing out. However, it's fresh, and different. Sure, there are no microtones as in traditional Sitar music, but don't take away the performance nor the composition of this cut.
Observation: hammering the notes without picking reduces the vibration needed from the bridge which give this "electric sitar" a sitar like quality. Never heard this piece, but the performer missing the boat on using this model for a "sitar" like tone if that is what he intended.
Thanks for the comment! I was going for a pull off bass line with my left hand, so I can fingerpick a melody with the harp/sympathetic strings with my right. The electric sitar guitar is very versatile. So I don't just go for the sitar style for every song I write.
All of you are retarded. This is for all sakes and purposes a guitar. It has six strings with 21 frets, organized chromatically according to the western 12 tone scale. Those strings are to be played in the same manner as any other electric guitar. The only difference is the addition of a special type of bridge to cause the strings to buzz, similar to a REAL sitar, and the addition of 12 drone/sympathy strings that can also be played in the manner shown here. THIS IS A GUITAR.
As I said, the frets are laid out with 12 tones to a scale. Sitars don't have set scales, but most of them, when played chromatically have 14 or 15 I believe, and they are divided VERY differently from the DO RE ME SO FA LA TI DO that we know. Sitars require an extremely different form of technique to play them, any guitarist could pick this up and play a harmonic minor scale and sound like an Arabian Knight in about five minutes.
Thanks for the comments! Yes this is a guitar inspired by the sitar...I think it is a very innovative, versatile guitar because of the sitar style buzz bridge and sympathetic strings that I use as a harp instead of drone strings. I think it is a crazy little cousin of a sitar and harp guitar! By all means not a traditional sitar but a very cool electric guitar with a sitar concept! Thanks again for the posts! :)
O god... some of you are just stupid ass hell... Its and electric sitar. Its simulates the sound of a sitar so people who are more confident in there guitar playing can have something that replicates that great sitar sound. Sitars are such hard instruments to play that this is a wonderful idea.
I've read about this instrument. Look up the Danelectro Coral Sitar. The distinguishing factor is the presence of drone strings located elsewhere on the body and a sloped bridge to alter the sustain. This class of instrument was an attempt at westernizing the sitar, and forming an incarnation that a guitarist could easily play. No, it is not a sitar. However, by all rights, it's not really a guitar either.
Beautiful music.........

the drone strings are not meant to be plucked - they just resonate when excited by a common frequency.
...but it sounds kinda cool anyway.
it's just that the six string part gets real academic when he's doing so.
