Javascript is actually an advanced object-oriented language that has a great deal of power. With libraries like YUI, Dojo or GWT, a developer can build rich applications that run in your browser. The goal is not to have flashier web pages, but to start developing applications in Javascript. For that reason, we can use all the speed we can get.
The Engine is really performing at high rates.

For today's applications, probably not.
For tomorrows applications, hell yeah!!

Considering the web is moving toward mobile devices (which desperately need optimized JS engines) and more JS-heavy pages, yes.

Besides the fact that there are useful web apps that make good use of a fast JavaScript engine...
There haven't been many huge web apps written that need something like V8 because JavaScript is so slow (in some browsers, IE8).
If you're happy with the current web, then you've no need for faster, more scalable and more capable JavaScript apps.
There are a people that think things could still be improved upon though.
