This song is actually a combination of two war time songs from ireland. The English part tells the story of a girl who is in love with a man in the army. Wearing red petticoats, women used to follow the army camps around to be with their lovers/husbands/brothers and because they were recognized in red petticoats they would recieve free food. The gaelic part is about a woman who is calling her lover to the door so they can run off and elope.
@Canadafreeze1 She's still around, and doing well as a solo act! She had a very good Christmas show last year on PBS, and I'm sure it will be on again this year.
@mercinaryphoenix proves your failure in gaelic. Scottish and Irish are both forms of gaelic except the irish form is known as gaeilge its just a variance in some phrases and words. Both are a few of the oldest tongues on this good earth perhaps I'd suggest you learn the language to see and understand :) Tiochaigh ar la.
@okiweird2 i agree - although i prefer the Celtic Woman version of Orinoco Flows...they are all incredibly talented people though, and all their songs are beautiful
Dear Ilakiruna, also all of the commentors, may I know from which song I could find the instrumental melody played in the beginning of the song on this clip from 1st till 10th seconds...it sounds so catchy and nice for me...thank you.
@DeseKang A New Day, by Mohicans :) I've seen this question asked lots of times on this video, maybe the title of the song should be included in the description of the video?
@NormbrettaMod Savages are they?/ The Irish language is one of the most beautiful languages I have ever heard spoken. To call the Irish savages is to call me a savage as well, as I am Irish, Scottish, Native American, German, and Polish by heritage. I am proud of the Irish and Native American parts of my heritage, and express them as much as I can.
WELL NOT SO SAVAGE NOW COS WE CAME OVER AND CIVILISED THEM. AND NO IT ISNT TO CALL YOU A SAVAGE AS WELL COS BEING IRISH ISNT JUST ABOUT BLOOD ITS ABOUT CULTURE YOU MORON. . . . .
HEY WE WAS PERFECTLY CIVILISED BEFORE THE ROMANS CAME OVER HERE YOU PIECE OF SHIT ITS THE IRISH THAT HAD TO BE SORTED OUT BY US ENGLISH COS THEY ACTED ALL UNCIVILISED AND SHIT DONT YOU KNOW ????
BY BEING SHIT SCARY BARBARIANS THATS HOW. AND ANYWAY IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE ROMAN CONQUEST THEN YOU'LL KNOW THEY WERE IN FACT ORIGINALLY INVITED HERE BY THE KING OF THE ATREBATES TO TRY AND "TAME" OUR LAND YOU FUCKING MORON
@NormbrettaMod A culture that they should be proud of. And who are you to decide who needs your so- called civilization? I would rather be a moron than a jackass any day!
WOT ??? BE PROUD OF A CULTURE THAT DOESNT EVEN KNOW HOW TO MAKE SCHOOLS ?? OR GOVERNMENT ?? AND EVEN THESE DAYS THEY TO BACKWARD TO DO PROPER INTENSIVE FARMING LIKE NORMAL CULTURES
@NormbrettaMod I am not going to argue about it. My point is, though, that they have the right to be different. Their language is a part of who they are. Their customs are a part of who they are. They have a right to be who and what they are, just like any other group of people. To me, you sound like the type of person who would prefer to put the Celts on reservations like Andrew Jackson did to the Native Americans, or to kill them, like Hitler did to the Jews.
THE CELTS? THEY ARENT THE CELTS. ITS BEEN DISCOVERED IN THE LAST DECADE THAT THE "CELTIC" CULTURES OF THE BRITISH ISLES HAVE MORE IN COMMON WITH PLACES LIKE GALICIA AND BASQUE COUNTRY (WHERE NATIVE BRITONS ARE DESCENDED FROM), NOT ANY OF THE FORMER CELTIC PROVINCES. SAME WITH THE LANGUAGE. YOU WRONG. STOP STANDING UP FOR UNCIVILISED PEOPLES NOW. OKAY. AND I DONT WANT TO KILL ANYONE I JUST WANT TO HELP THEM TO BE BETTER HUMANS :((((
I'm sad for you @christianpoet2003 you call these people uncivilized yet you're the one acting like it. I read your comments and as a 17 year old I see ignorance in your thoughts.
@NormbrettaMod I will stand up for whomever I want to stand up for. I can see that I need to find a different video for this song so as not to get myself in trouble.
@NormbrettaMod I'm sad for you, you call these people uncivilized yet you're the one acting like it. I read your comments and as a 17 year old I see ignorance in your thoughts.
i learned this song for fun when i was 13, when i turned 15 i was able to go to ireland and preform infront of judges with my choir, we did this song and i was the soloist, and we got a perfect score. It was the celtic woman version. because of tht i learned Gaelic, from roseta stone. now im 16
@EmoGirlLovsU Truth is intelligence has nothing to do with how many languages you know. It's great you know those languages but honestly it doesn't make you more intelligent.
@mercinaryphoenix i thought and what it said on my roseta stone package was gaelic was the old irish and now its shortened more and about the celtic thing tht the way of life of the irish and the welsh thing i hav no clue lol , drawing a blank.... LOL on me :)
@mercinaryphoenix Actually, gaelic has a few different dialects, one of which is Irish gaelic another is Scottish gaelic. There is also something called Manx gaelic, but I don't know who exactly the Manx are. Welsh is a celtic language but belongs to a different classification than gaelic.
So this is Orlagh Fallon singing this one right? I have the version sung by Lisa Kelly on my iPod. I like them both. Aren't they both in the group Celtic Woman?
@CadjinGisclair yes, they were. but Orla left a few years ago for her solo career. just saw Celtic Woman's Songs From the Heart last week, going to see Orla Fallon's My Land this Oct !!!

CD - Mohicans (Music Inspired by the Deep Spirit of Nature), released 2002
track #4 - "A New Day" by Fabrizio Baldoni, Gino De Stefani, Paolo Re
I was so eager to find this song, I read all the comments--I'm not the only one wanting to know...nor the only one to post the title BUT at last we have a link to listen to the full version.
If I was Orlagh, I would feel so awkward to just stand there and sing and...try to figure out how to move without falling over. At least gimme a mic so I have something to hold!
@BlakeKilbourne very true. she and meav are admittedly my favorites. oh no, I just went on to their website to see what her name was, but it says they're both FORMER members. WHAT?! when did that happen? *shock*
@mirroredhour Celtic Woman just isn't what it used to be. Too much commercialization, maybe? Not sure. I do know that both Orla and Meav expressed reservations about the overly hectic tour schedule.
@MrTouchShriek oh yes, that explains it. they are very popular and it wouldn't be surprising for them to have a hectic tour schedule. but, still. i guess i'll just check out their other non-celtic-woman-related stuff.
I love Anúna and always will. And I just want to say you people (irish) who understands Gailge (gaeliska in swe) are very lucky. Such a wonderful sound......
@ danielle1995715 it's about a woman whose lover's enlistment in the Irish Brigade who left Ireland after the Williamite War (1691) to serve in the French Army, and it's about how she'd do anything to make sure her loved one is safe and the meaning of siuil go doras agus ealaigh liom is go to the door and flee with me, I think its referencing how she'd rather her and her lover to run away than have him leave to fight.
learning irish for ye must be fun but here in southern ireland we all have to learn it and im 14 and nearly every kid in school hates learning it. i used to be in the irish part of the school but every class was in irish and it was to hard for me so i moved to the english part of the school nd im doing higher level irish, but it is hard. :(
@khnmwbff yes i agree and i plan on it. plus when i go to ireland ill want to know how to speak it just for fun. even though barley anyone dose any more. we need to change that
My family is mostly Welsh and Northern Irish, and I also have trouble deciding whether I should learn Gaelic or not, let alone choosing between Welsh and Irish dialect.
I come from both Irish and Scottish decent. Both are Celtic nations, and it makes it very difficult to try to choose which type of Gaelic to learn. I need to find a teacher first, however. Teaching myself this amazing language isn't going so well...
@XxLoveNightmaresxX Learn either and the second will come easier. :) I learnt Irish all the way through school and can understand some Scottish Gaelic!
I'm of Celtic descent myself (Welsh though, not Irish) but I agree that Gaelic languages are too important to loose. I'm currently trying to track down someone who will teach me Welsh, and then perhaps I'll move onto some more if I ever get to grips with my "mother tongue" - if that's the right thing to call it.
Such beautiful languages shouldn't be allowed to die out.
@fireloverbc13 I was responding to SuperCritterLover's comment, he sings this song to his horses. His comment is just below mine if you want to read it.
Anyone know where I can find a good online place to learn Gaelic? I've always been interested in languages, and I find Gaelic an absolutely beautiful sound to hear and would like to be able to speak it as well!
@1angel0777 Just search for "learning Gaeilge" on Google if you want to learn the language of this song. If you want Scottish search for "Scottish Gaelic".
@1angel0777 There may be Irish culture groups near you that offer classes. There are some in Connecticut USA. Some colleges and universities offer it as well. New York University does, in CT, Housatonic Community College offers it.
On your own, check out the Teach Yourself series. Get the editions that come with CDs. This won't be as good as a fully integrated multimedia course like Rosetta Stone, but it will do the job for a dedicated student and is a hell of a lot cheaper.
@IntoTheMystical If you search" Irish language" in Google and go to Wikipedia, there it says: "Irish (Gaeilge) is a Goidelic language of the Indo-European language family,..."
Don't worry there are those of us who speak it still Gaelic is not dead so Tapadh leat for loading this video Eireann go Brach ! Slán agus beannacht leat
The Irish language, is absolutely beautiful for music, as pieces like this prove. It has fewer and fewer native speakers, and I for one will be truly sad if it goes the way of Anglo-Saxon/Old English, which is just as beautiful for poetry but is now sadly long dead and spoken only by specialists. The fact that music like this is, for obvious reasons, more widespread than recitations of ancient poetry will hopefully keep Gaeilge accessible for a long time yet.
This is easily researched on Google. Gaelic is a group of languages, Gaeilge, Manx, and Scottish Gaelic. Gaeilge is the official language of Ireland, and in English, Gaeilge means "Irish".
@youaresooogay No, every reference I've read says the English word for Gaeilge is "Irish", I have to go by that unless you have something official I can check. I've also heard many Irish people say Gaeilge means Irish.
@youaresooogay There are so many languages in the British Isles, there is no shame in getting a little confused at times. Good luck with your linguistic studies.
i love how celtic woman is actually teaching me some gaelic, thank you very much ladies! keep singing and bringing a little bit of ireland all around the world!

@vampiremasquerade88 yes it does need changing.
as has been said in the past. " Never doubt a small group of committed people, who wish to change world. iIdeed, it is the only thing that has."

XxLoveNightmaresxX 1 year ago
@XxLoveNightmaresxX Learn either and the second will come easier. :) I learnt Irish all the way through school and can understand some Scottish Gaelic!
AoibheClaire 1 year ago
I'm of Celtic descent myself (Welsh though, not Irish) but I agree that Gaelic languages are too important to loose. I'm currently trying to track down someone who will teach me Welsh, and then perhaps I'll move onto some more if I ever get to grips with my "mother tongue" - if that's the right thing to call it.
Such beautiful languages shouldn't be allowed to die out.

@SoulStorm830 The complete translation of lyrics is
"Walk, walk, walk my love
Walk quickly to me, softly move
Walk through the door and away we'll flee
And safe may my darling be"
this song is my favorite. it's beautiful. It makes me proud to be half irish.

As weird as it sounds, I sing this to my horses to get them to calm down. They've heard a lot of Gaelige since they came to live at my place.

@SuperCritterLover Horses are very smart animals - and have good taste in music it would seem!

1angel0777 1 year ago
@1angel0777 Just search for "learning Gaeilge" on Google if you want to learn the language of this song. If you want Scottish search for "Scottish Gaelic".
IntoTheMystical 1 year ago 2
@1angel0777 There may be Irish culture groups near you that offer classes. There are some in Connecticut USA. Some colleges and universities offer it as well. New York University does, in CT, Housatonic Community College offers it.
On your own, check out the Teach Yourself series. Get the editions that come with CDs. This won't be as good as a fully integrated multimedia course like Rosetta Stone, but it will do the job for a dedicated student and is a hell of a lot cheaper.

@BFro2ndHandAFro It's called "A New Day" by the Mohicans.

@IntoTheMystical If you search" Irish language" in Google and go to Wikipedia, there it says: "Irish (Gaeilge) is a Goidelic language of the Indo-European language family,..."
You're 100% right!
God bless the irish!

The fact that music like this is, for obvious reasons, more widespread than recitations of ancient poetry will hopefully keep Gaeilge accessible for a long time yet.

beautiful!!! i love this song!
12bennyboy12 1 year ago
This is easily researched on Google. Gaelic is a group of languages, Gaeilge, Manx, and Scottish Gaelic. Gaeilge is the official language of Ireland, and in English, Gaeilge means "Irish".
The language in the video is Gaeilge or Irish.
IntoTheMystical 1 year ago
@IntoTheMystical Gaeilge means "Gaelic", not Irish
Don't forget Cornish and Welsh....they are also Gaelic.
Slainté!
youaresooogay 1 year ago
@youaresooogay No, every reference I've read says the English word for Gaeilge is "Irish", I have to go by that unless you have something official I can check. I've also heard many Irish people say Gaeilge means Irish.
IntoTheMystical 1 year ago
@IntoTheMystical touché! I was always taught that "Erse" and Gaedhilic were Irish, and that Gaeilge was gaelic.
Sucks. Indo-germanic languages are very dialectical, and Goidelic groups are apparently no exception. Nice to learn something new.
I'm very interested in learning Manx gaelic right now. Very hard.
youaresooogay 1 year ago
@youaresooogay There are so many languages in the British Isles, there is no shame in getting a little confused at times. Good luck with your linguistic studies.

between that, my pashtu lessons and my german i get confused a lot lol

@youaresooogay scotch gaelic is known as Gaidhlig by the speakers in Nova Scotia we call it Gaelic unless we are speaking it
MissAlbaNuadh 1 year ago
@youaresooogay Cornish, Welsh and Breton (let's not forget them) are from the Brythonic branch of the Celtic language group, not the Goidelic branch.
