@Mrtw4t444 and who are you to imply that people in mma do not have good striking ... boxing does not display the best stand up artists in the world In a real fight there are not rules,a person can clinch/strike clinch and throw .ground and pound ..anyone who knows what a kick feels like can tell you kicks hurt bad mma fighters have to fight with an open stance to prepare against takedowns/kickso in all reality you dont know shitand your boxer in a street fight would get owned by a blackb in gjj
@Mrtw4t444 What I think he was saying is that, in jiu-jitsu, there is no lucky punch, you need to know what you are doing first if you want to win a ground fight.
What an unbelievable crock of shit here. I love BJJ as much as anyone as i am a purple belt & have been practicing for 6 years now. However, the Gracies are really delusional with their mentality, no wonder none of them are doing well in today's MMA. Rener says you walk into a boxing Gym without knowing a single thing about Boxing and you can rock someone by just "swinging for the fences"? Yeah sure, get in the ring with a trained Boxer with that philosophy and see how that works out for ya!
@kanguesso I think hes more along the lines of saying that you can get much luckier in other martial arts just by instinct, strength, physical ability, but jiu-jitsu is just too complicated to come into right off the bat and start owning people that are trained.
@scj760 He's hinting that BJJ is "superior" than any other art. That has always been a "Gracie mentality". They R too fucking cocky & self absorbed to realize that there is no such thing as a "SUPERIOR" martial art. BJJ isn't anymore complicated than Boxing, Muay Thai, or any other Martial art. All you have to do is put in the time. You really think you can walk off the street without knowing a single thing about Muay Thai or Boxing & get "lucky" with a vicious Tyson or Paquiao? you're dreaming.
@kanguesso What he means is that there are higher chances of a person that has no boxing skills to be at least able to defend himself from the boxer while a guy with no jiu jitsu knowledge will get choked against a more experience dguy.
@IamVeryFrozen Like i said, get someone with absolutely no boxing skills whatsoever in the ring with a prime time Tyson and see how well that person defends himself. It is no different than someone who has absolutely no idea about BJJ and gets on the mat with a high level BJJ practitioner. It's the same thing here. The point is that the Gracies think BJJ is the "end all and be all" of Martial arts.
@kanguesso Hey now you changed your words, first you said a trained boxer and now you say Tyson! Well thats a hell of a difference and yeah there is a big difference between a jiu jitsu noob and a boxing noob. A trained boxer will obviously beat the noob, but the noob will still feel cormfatble since he has the notion of how to punch. In Jiu jitsu, a 3 month jiu jitsu guy HUMILIATES the noob!
@IamVeryFrozen I didn't change my words, i just simply used Tyson in comparison to a top BJJ practitioner like the Gracies. Believe me, if you have never even trained a single day in boxing, and you go into the ring with a trained boxer, no matter how wildly you swing at him, there would be NOTHING COMFORTABLE about your experience. He'd simply toy with you until he decides to dispose of you much like how Anderson Silva does to opponent who aren't on his striking level.
@kanguesso Yes you did, tyson is not an example of a trained boxer, he is an example of a pro boxer and even a legend. I am not denying that fact I am just saying that punches depend about 70% on technique and 30% on strength. Jiu jitsu fighting abilities depend 100% on technique that is what Rener means. A strong guy may have the 30% in boxing while in Jiu Jitsu you have the 0%.
@IamVeryFrozen First of all, THAT IS BULLSHIT. I am a BJJ practitioner and have been for 6 years. I am a purple belt under Renzo Gracie in NY. I love BJJ as much as anyone so i am not some BJJ hater. BJJ fighting abilities does not depend "100% on technique". That is an exaggeration on your part. BJJ is still evolving as we speak. The top BJJ competitors spend countless hours on strength & conditioning programs because they know it makes a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE when you're Technical, Strong & Fit.
@kanguesso First of all your reasoning is BULLSHIT. I do not know, what your technical skill is, but I have seen people that do no physical exercise beat strong guys of the same level. Tell me how being strong helps you mantain the mount? the guard? the side mount? How does being strong help you do or defend submissions? How do they help you do sweeps, takedowns, or guard passes? See? Even if what you said was true, strength is useless without technique to back it up, 0% chance still.
@kanguesso If you are planning to use my last statement against me, read this, boxers do have have a lot of technique, but the simple ability to throw a straight punch and haymakers are held by most grown men, beginner boxers have not yet developed the ability to defend all noob potential knockout punches such as the haymaker. While a jiu jitsu beginner has at least developed the ability to defend the most common untrained attacks (headlock) if any.
@kanguesso Trust me I am not inventing anything I began training in MMA a while ago which means I experienced what going to the first kick boxing class was compared to my first jiu jitsu class. Everything Rener described was my experience, even though I was beated up in kick boxing, I felt I was experiencing a world totally new to me once I did my first sparring session. In boxing you at least have a dumbass plan, in jiu jitsu your only plan is to survive, that is no plan.
@IamVeryFrozen Look, lets just agree to disagree. I have a problem with the "Gracie Mentality" and arrogance about the sport. I don't have a problem with BJJ or its effectiveness because i love the sport myself. You on the other hand drink too much of that Gracie Kool Aid, no pun intended, you hold them to a certain pedestal that you swallow everything they say. I again, i see no point in continuing any further because neither one of us will convince the other!
@kanguesso I do not believe this for no reason. I have experienced what they say and can prove their words. Your way of thinking on the other hand is what is ruining bjj, turning into a sport that only focuses on the ground and that creates sport technique that rely on strength and athleticism rather than leverage. HEY bjj was created for another purpose. Stop trolling you won't convince anyone we all have lived the greatness of gjj, SELF DEFENSE priority, SPORT is optional.
@kanguesso 99% of people can throw their hands and cover their head, 99% of people can't apply or escape an armlock.. this is the point. No need to worry about "if the jiu jitsu guy tried boxing.." because everyone knows the outcome. The question is "what's the most effective martial art?" the obvious answer is- 'the one' fewest people understand. There's an important reason Gracie's believe JiuJitsu is most effective- it's been proven many a time.
@LukeRock1000 My point is, there is no such thing as "most effective", "superior" or "Best" Martial art. Every single Martial art has its limitations. My problem with the "Gracie Mentality" is that they seem to think BJJ has no limitations and therefore it is the "superior" martial art. I saw a video documentary where Rorion Gracie said BJJ was the "most complete" martial art, that's an oxymoron to me. How can BJJ be the most complete Martial art when it mostly focuses on ground techniques?
@kanguesso superior to other martial arts doesn't imply there are no limitations. most effective because fewest people understand. punching and kicking is fairly straight forward, of course you can be a better puncher with practise, but most people can throw a punch. most people can't apply an armlock. UFC1 gives a fair amount of evidence that JJ is superior to other arts in my understanding. As for Rorion's statement, I don't know the context, I guess he's thinking everyone can punch
@LukeRock1000 Rorion is right, most arts cover stand up strikes and self defense takedowns like bear hugs defenses, but none takes its time to teach students to ground fight. Jiu Jitsu has lots of standing techniques all based on the same principles the ground ones are. We spend lots of time in the ground because it is more complex than stand up and because we like to be there, but we do not ignore stand up. Hence the most complete.
@kanguesso Mostly but not entirely. The stand up strategy is quite narrow. You learn attacks, defenses and strategies from a normal standing position, sometimes pinned against a wall, but thats it. In the ground we learn the attcks, def. and strategies from hundreds of positions including the stand up and thousands of situations.
@kanguesso I'm surprised anyone could think that boxing (two hands) is just as complicated as JiuJitsu, I understand boxing takes a whole heap of skill, but JJ has billions of factors to come to terms with. I'm in the one percent who can't throw hands and ninety nine percent who can't lock arms, so I hope I don't sound arrogant, but it seemed like you misinterpreted the points being made.
@kanguesso Trust me there is a huge difference between been in a pool in were you can still swim as a dog at least. Since at least you do not drown, but you swim as a noob. While when you are in a pool and you have no idea how to swim, because you will DROWN. "The world is not ready for the ground but we are" Ryron
Executing a Jiu jitsu takedown to a street opponent is like throwing a baby to the pool, you will swim, and he will drown.
@IamVeryFrozen The same could be said about Ryron's "Boxing", assuming he had never taken a single boxing class. Throwing him in the ring against a trained Boxer is like throwing a baby into a pool no matter how wildly Ryron tries to swing at his opponent, he'd easily go down for the count. That's simply my point, it is that it could be said about both arts.
@kanguesso Of course, but you do not Rener's point he is not talking about a noob fighting Royce Gracie, or a noob boxer fighting an expert boxer. He is talking about a 3 month old jiu jitsu guy vs a noob and a 3 month boxer vs a noob. Trust me I have boxed against noobs and strong noobs at least connect some hits, but I still beat them. A noob jiu jitsu guy only knows headlocks if he is lucky. Trust me it is not the same, it is similar as in any competition activity, but not equal.
