  • There is nothing. NOTHING that beats acid composed on a C64!

  • Comment removed

  • I came.........

  • Srsly dude, you fcking rock!!!11

  • Just enbelievingly fat sounds. And I didn´t switch on my c128 with SID 8580 since the early 90ies. But how many hours took it you to build this amzing device ?

  • What controller is that? Looks really useful.

  • You sir, are a god amongst men.

  • This demo has just allowed me to transcend matter :P

  • Hey TK. What SID chips did you stuff in your midibox SID v2? 8580R5? Thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • that is just way too cool

  • u can still buy the 8580 SID chips ?? they didn't stop producing them yrs ago ??

  • @xadam2dudex Those things were made by the 100,000s. The term New Old Stock is used for items like those that sit in storage unused till they sell.

  • It would be cool to have one of these, but I have no electronics skills or time to learn. Seams like its a big nono to buy one.

  • WTF !!! :-o

  • hi whats the bass used on eliminator and the f-14 tomcat and the demo of Ritual 2 demoscene ? they sound much better plz anyone help

  • Thanks for uploading this video. Sounds fantastic. Gotta love the SID chip!

  • Is this a synthesizer too? Where do the sounds come from?

  • A-MA-ZING !!!!!!

  • "Only" EQs, compression and delay? :(

  • @toxicgospel Well, still sounds great.

  • Fat sound, amazing! Nice job, and thank you very much for sharing it!!!

  • The designer of the SID would be thrilled to hear this ;o)

  • What's that controller at the bottom called.

  • Fuckin' sick!

  • Impressive!

    Good tune also!

    Peace!!!

  • I REALLY want one of these midi boxes. But alas, God has made me far too stupid to learn how to build one. Is there a way I could perhaps trade some sort of currency in exchange for one of these fine machines?

AKA: Are you making money? If not open up an online store for them!

  • great tune!

  • props! the taste of childhood!

  • You can do quite a lot with 4 SIDs. I mean, you have 12 oscillators at your disposal in total, which would give even a decent polysynth a big run for its money.

I can imagine throwing a few of these boards in a rack, and run a complete SID orchestra...

  • hammer...

  • ASID xD

  • Eight 6581's would really be something. I can do four SID chips with my HardSID easily anyway, most of which are 6581's.. but I would be interested in a Midibox SID equipment which would have eight 6581's in it. I wonder how much that would cost and where such equipment could be obtained from?

  • That's fantastic. I'd buy an album full of that SID goodness in a heartbeat.

  • Mr. Thorsten µcapps you are a god! Currently trying to get my own 8 SID's, im planning on using them as 2x stereo (2chip) 8580 w/ cleaner filters and 2x stereo dirty 6582's or 6581's depending which type one can obtain.

  • Funny how I never understood in eighties, how damn good sound the chip had.

But I still have 5x c64's, now I know what to do with at least 4 of them... :)

  • i would love to have a midi sid! or a sid station! have you heard about the hardsid?

  • Oh my bloody God mate!

Had those acid house people the imagination to use the dirty-sounding C64, who knows how many records this computer would still be considered indispensable for?

  • Great!

  • GOA! yeah...

  • @mariodivine : YEAH!

  • this is soo sweet.

thinking, 20 years later since the making of the SID by MOS and now it's clear why i kept my 3 c64's in a box. i totally agree this sounds so much sweeter than a 303. occasionally, the sounds that are generated by the SID chip vaguely remind me of games i played on the c64, maybe that's why the sound is so strong.

kind of hits me harder that listening to 303 made music.

thank you for the circuit bending wizardry!

  • what is this??? i mean the device ... ???

  • don't know why ppl are giving you negative remarks for asking a question. Especially a valid one.

The controller he's using is a Korg Microkontrol .

  • Tak! Ah-Lah!

  • excellent stuff, you make it look so easy

  • ACID HAUS!!

  • sounds almost better than a 303

  • @COMPACTASS1 It DOES.

  • i want that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@#$%^&$^&%$^

  • oh, how i regret past ignorance. I threw away a broken C64, but I could have salvaged the sid chip and used the case for mods. ARGH!

  • @malgez YOU DID WHAT !!? Oh my god ...

  • @EvilMaxWar fuck this is an old post... haha. well, i was about 11 or 12 so forgive me.

  • @malgez not just the case but the SID chip. Not much good without that.

  • Hört sich gewaltig super Geil an!

  • amaaazing! i'll build one, too as soon as i will have some money =)

  • !!! A-W-E-S-O-M-E !!!

  • this rocks dude

  • This is just way to awesome

    5*

  • I'm harmful, because I sold my chip, but the guy makes demos with it.

  • wirklich ein sehr cooles teil iss ja soweit ich weiss ein DIY Projekt kannst du mir vielleicht sagen wo ich die pläne und layouts etc dafür bekomme wäre echt nett thx schonma

  • awesome shit.

pardon my language. sounds so awesome and nice control you have here. this demo rocks

  • OMFG ROX MAN ROX

  • Amazing. Always loved the SID chip.

  • I like your mousepad

  • Unbelievable... this takes the cake! I can listen to it over and over again. A testament to the power of the SID chip (I'm now grateful to have 2 of them of my own).

Hope to see/hear more of your work like this...

  • nice ! i built one for my own :-) it was a lot of work, and i like it

  • I'm not into rave music, but this sounds SWEET! 4 Sid chips huh? Too bad the C64 didn't have that many. That would have been the absolute bomb!

  • this made me cream my pants.... very frothy feeling

  • verry lol

  • this is inspiring, Im building my next synth, either a xoxbox, a sid midibox, or whatever else possible, this sidmidibox is fucking dope tho

  • I just completed a single sid/core mbsid. I love it!!

  • The SID has so much potential which these guys clearly demonstrate. A single SID in a C64 is just scratching the surface.

  • I love MIDI sounds!

  • they ARENT MIDI sounds, you idiot!they are SID synths.

  • Did I say that I love SID sounds? No, I said that I love MIDI sounds. Get a life!!

  • I have a life, you fuck! And your point is what exactly?Did this video contain any MIDI sounds?I dont think so;your comment is nothing but spam. And then you come and visit my videos and say GET A LIFE?I like chiptune a lot and I also have a life.I dont expect everybody to understand this music, so those who dont should fuck off!

  • dude chill.

  • that dude was a dumbfuck!he started spamming my videos.

  • Wow, yes I love this! I like the sound very much. I'd like to make one myself with the full configuration, and all 8 SID chips. But when I read the site, it seems very difficult to get all the stuff together.

  • Dit is zo ongelovelijk mooi !

Zo zie je maar, wie het kleine niet deert !

De C64 Rules, ik wordt knetter high van deze muziek, lekker jointje erbij, ha ha ha.

  • tout simplement enorme!!!

  • Sounds very TB303 - have the filters been designed to sound like the 303? Sounds like the hardcore acid, mind, I'm not trying to disparage what you've done, it's great.

    Kind regards

    Mr Braidy

    Technician, Museum of Techno

  • dude TB303 rocks. I love the sound they made out of the SIDs in this project. I god damn hate chiptune songs. This is real basslines and drums.

  • Nothing can beat the SID ! SID4EVA!

  • this is damn impressive... sounds sooo nice... great work man..

  • One of the fattest synths I ever heard.

    I wish I had one...

    And realy good music ...

  • The power of the SID.

  • Hello,

Es ce que vous pouvez donner vos explications en Français ?????

    Merci beaucoup

  • WOW! this is awesome!

  • im trying to get into making a midi controller i don't really have a clue were to start i just have a vision in my mind. thanx for the video respect.

  • Very Very Nice, i have a 303 myself and listen to a lot of clones, but this comes close.

I used to have the Prophet64 on my C64

and the bass synth in there is as nice as.

Really nice job, did you make the sidbox yourself?

  • Yes, I'm the designer of MIDIbox SID hardware and software :)

  • @ucapps

    You're a genius.Amazing.

  • @nvanzoeren

I'd like to point out that as phenomenon SID chip and it's unique sound is more like "new TB" instead of trying to be TB emulator. It's one of a kind. It's a SID.

But it is good for basslines too and that's why SID TB emulations exists -like the Bassline program in MSSIAH.

As for best hardware TB clones i would go to x0xb0x or Acidlab Bassline2.

  • @Tri3Dr

x0xb0x way closer to the org. TB303 sound then the acidlab if you ask me.

  • *6851

  • *6581

Actually, 8580s are used in this demo.

  • C64 6501 FTW!

  • psychedelic

  • never knew a sid could sound like that.. truely impressing bye bye 303. i wanna hear some dirty old sid sounds still through the midibox sid cause ive only heard that sorta stuff through hardsid4u so far. (time to do some research)

  • that synth and sequence rocked!! drums too!!

  • I Wish I had that kind of manual control back in the days I wrote videogame music on the C64... Damn, that thing rocks!

    JT / MoN

  • Just in case anyone did'nt recognise it,

that comment was from the legendary c64 producer

    - Jeroen Tel, from Maniacs of Noise!

  • this synth is indeed amazing work!

but the drums... they SUCK. the arps practically scream "give me some BREAKS".

I don't understand people's obsession with straight beats. they're boring as fuck (now give me thumbs down already, kids).

    otherwise, like I said: awesome.

  • THAT'S SOO FUCKING GREAT!!!, i'm really amazed.. this is seriously one of the best diy synths!!! one day i wanna make my own! KUDOS FOR YOU!!

  • absolute genius ...five stars!

  • This is great stuff :)

  • Is it possible to buy a MIDIBox SID?

  • Midibox is an open-source project, so there aren't any retailers. You'd be better of just paying someone from the midibox forums to build you one.

  • Good luck with that. Those guys are nazis about that sort of thing.

  • I look forward to the day I can drink a perfect glass of wine blended to perfection in a laboratory with synthetic flavours and not have to buy that primitive labour intensive grape-based shit one gets nowadays..

  • WE WANT MORE, WE WANT MORE, WE WANT MORE!!!

    Well...

At least I WANT MORE, I WANT MORE, I WANT MORE!

Amazing how good music so simple chips can produce when combined correctly. :)

  • awesome, man

  • amazing! greetings from Italy

  • great stuff :) ... have a mikrocontrol too ^^

  • hot stuff! im going to try to make one any tips! i have a sid chip! :) any tool i need to make mine?

  • Its when that 2nd lower baseline comes in at 0:33 it blows me away!

  • I own an 808, a 606 and a 303 and have just bought a C64. I didn't buy the C64 to sound like anything other than than a what it is because it sounds absolutely amazing in its own right! The SID chip has its own individual unique sound which is fantastic.

  • sounds like KULA WORLD from PSX :)

great sounts ...wanna make one :)

  • The fact that you compare MBSID with Rebirth is a honor for me.

    Best Regards, Thorsten.

  • haha , I actually laughed out loud at "booring rebirth" :P

  • Truely..amazing!

  • wow kikazzz! amazing SID device, good music too

  • Hey there, uCApps. If you are coming to Musik Messe 2008, let me know. I'd like to buy you a beer! I'll be there the whole week as I'm working at the show.

    Cheers!

  • o a harder bass line would fcking kill :) <3

  • are you a signed artist? cuz i realllly suggest you send a demo to record labels... id buy ur tracks man. the acid around the middle of the vid fcking exploded my ears... O_O we could use some old school shit from ya, the trance scene has gone to sh!t these days. keep up the good work ; )

  • Like svofski said this is dope for my mind, would wery much get my hands on some demorecording from u. such really cool stuff man keep playin n u will get rich on it 2. Maybe u r allready, however please make more n if possible i want some demo or existing record or what have u.

  • It's only DIY

  • Not sampled. The drums are generated by the SID in real-time.

  • How can one create this kind of snaredrum with SID? I have always been bad at making snaredrums with SID.. I want to learn!

  • It's a triangle/noise wavetable sound. I programmed a special drum engine which modulates the oscillators at 200 Hz (10 times faster than a C64), so it could be hard to reproduce it on a C64.

The special thing on this SD is, that it's routed through the SID filter in HP mode.

  • even the drums are played by SIDs :)

  • That looks like the original MIDIbox SID that's been doing the rounds on the net for some years. Did you build this yourself? Cool stuff. I want one!!

  • It is the original (I'm the creator of the project :)

  • Really? Fantastic work there. How the hell do you come up with stuff like this? I can't even figure out how to get my Neptune 2 synth to respond to program change messages! This is amazing. I want one :-)

  • This is dope, please record more!

  • Other than the korg microcontrol...what do you need to create this music? (be very specific...if you do respond)

  • Im sorry, i meant to say it can have upto 8 chips but only 4 are being used in this video.

  • Okay my first reply never posted.

To create this music you need the Sid Sound Chips that were common in the Commodore 64/128 computers.

You can build this synth yourself, check out the ucapps website.

For that acid sound you could also use a TB-303, or one of its clones such as the x0xb0x

  • Oh and the korg microcontrol is only used to control this synth, it does not produce any sound itself.

You can use virtually any midi keyboard with the Midibox Sid

  • Wow you are sooooo clever, how do you do it this is the best video I have ever seen, we just love it, thanks

  • awesomeness at it's highest level ...

  • Man you are just awesome, im going to build my own, after my exams i will assemble a simple 1 sid version, yet i dont have money to the whole 8 sid thing.

The OPL3 FM synth is an other incredible project, i wanna make that too.

    Cheers and happy building.

  • couldn't agree more! this is just great.

  • O M G! *fab* *fab *fab* Damn i so thinking of building one myself, i would be happy with a singe sidder :)

Btw, nice frickin' heyboard! What kind it it?

  • It's a korg microkontrol

  • SID rulez!!!

  • I've heard a lot of Midibox demos, especially by you, but this is by far the most inspiring and amazing one I've ever heard. I mean 4 SIDs doing thier thing at the same time? That's so cool!

  • 4|,|350|'|3¡

  • Skeptics say that electronic music has no soul or passion... The tiny SID begs to differ ;)

  • They say electronic music has no soul or passion... The little SID begs to differ ;)

  • very nice dude, but what is sequencing the beast.. btw NICE those VU effects on the drums..

  • I'm using the internal sequencers of MBSID V2

The drum and two bassline sequences are selected interactively from the MIDI keyboard. :)

  • is that the internal sequencer? nice!! oh im so stoked!!!!cant wait to get wilbas PCB underway..

is the selection quantized btw? meaning synced to the internal BPM?

  • Both options are possible - sequencers can be synched to internal BPM generators, or to an external MIDI clock master.

I added more infos to the video description.

  • excellent

  • At last, more from you and your SID. MORE MORE MORE MORE

  • I` was waiting to see some new teaser from you Thorsten, and I love this one! :)

  • it is just a trailer........ well done!
