@AkshayLord Easily? No. You could probably stick an flipflop onto one of the data wires and try to pulse it (don't know if there is the api to do such a thing), but since the bus is common any activity on usb would flicker your led.
Probably the easiest way is to use a PIC or some other controller and program it to receive signals from usb.
how would i make a series of led using a usb cable and have one run on the usb wires and the other run on another wire? i could send you a picture through pm if you like to make this more clear!
@nevarezg your math seems to be correct... but lets face it, superbright white leds are capable in my testing of permanently holding up to 40mA (47ohm gives 29mA (measurement) ) ... At least the ones I buy, event when in specs it says 20mA. I've burned a few leds in my time and this one seems to be holding well... Sure, to be safe and to guarantee the ridiculously long lifespan of an led diode the 20mA should be observed. I'll change the annotation right away.
@windows4222 location of the resistor is not of great importance, its the resulting resistance of the loop that matters which regulates the current. If you connect leds in series then only one resistor will suffice, but you will need a hard power supply so the voltage doesn't drop below Ud of the diodes.
@1acidboy You'd get a pretty yellow ... than orange and then you would have to go by a new diode. And probably open some windows on account of that burning semiconductor smell...
Nice but too bright and narrow light field and cable is flimsy
So no really good for a keyboard light

@labobo Distortion lens and just wrapping the usb cable in a copper wire coil would solve that.

Awesome Video but with the LED 3V??? what if i have a LED with a 2.6V Max and connect with out a resistor? will it blow up the led?
