Nice to see you care, but good is in the eye of the beholder. That house sparrow now has the chance to grow up and join it's brothers and sister in killing the young cardinals and cracking their eggs in their nests.
It's certainly honorable what you did, no doubt about that. Unfortunately it may not have been the best thing to do.
Right, the wild birds do form a attachment to people. I have some house Wrens, wild in my yard and come over whenever im in garden, best talkers around
I'm always conflicted about letting my cats roam free. They probably bring in a half dozen birds a year. Some of which aren't as fortunate as this one. They'd be impossible to live with if I kept them inside all the time though. They LOVE the outdoors.
@Blinkazoid Keeping cats as indoor cats s very difficult, ive actually built a cat run on the side of my house so theycan still go outside, however they cant go hunting. (unless somthing manages to get in, which has somehow happened before.)
Nice to see this. A neighbourhood cat got one of the little sparrows who follow me around in the garden every morning. The other sparrows made quite a noise over the loss of their friend.
Thanks Bean!!! He certainly took off just fine when he finally made up his mind, that's for sure! It wouldn't surprise me if he was hanging around the bird feeder when he got snatched. You're right though, he'll probably be right back there. Free meals are hard to pass up, LOL.
Blink your respect for nature in general and small living creatures (things that many people consider to be insignificant trifles) speaks volumes about the sort of man you are, and I respect you for it.
I guess it was kinda like when an offer of a *free* vacation comes in the mail. You just know there's a catch in there somewhere. He was just doing his version of reading the fine print before making sure it was OK to take off, LOL.
Thanks Danny! Hopefully he'll go forth and warn other birds to be on the alert about Suzy and Carly, (Babs isn't a hunter). Anyhow, he'll have quite a tale to tell his fellow feathered friends:)
BLinkie--great vid man. felt like i was there in your hand!
yeah, seemed like a sparrow---and you are right--that is ONE LUCKY BIRD---i've had my cat deliver many a bird in..well..a couple pieces. Nice one man.
Thanks Tom! Heheheh, now all of a sudden I've got this mental image of a miniature Megalis in my hand and your bitching and moaning about the experience of my cat dragging you through the pet door. Yikes, and you're laying it on pretty thick too, LOL.
Very sweet, and definitely a sparrow. I had one that went head long into the porch window last winter. She was a little loopy for an hour or so but made the same miraculous recovery. Well done.
Thanks Gert! I keep an empty food bowl handy in the house to cap down over the top of whatever critter my cats bring in. This was early morning and I couldn't half see. Suzy whined and I got up and she dropped something. I quickly put the bowl over the top of it. Then of course I had to sneak a peek at it and it flew off and into a window. I caught it before it was able to fly off again.
The video didn't quite do justice to how much Suzy was whining to be let out in the background. She was pretty pitiful sounding. I once had a cat snatch a bird out of mid-air that I had just released. Now that would have made a great video, LOL.
Hehehe, undoubtedly I must seem like the most ungrateful gift reciever in history to her. I grab her gifts as quick as I can and release them outside as just as quickly. Hopefully she's buying these on a credit card which has some sort of loss protection or something.
It would have been even mistier if we were getting our normal amount of rain these days. Of course we've had droughts the last few summers so maybe no rain is the new normal these days.
I should have given him directions to my compost pile. It has tons of worms:)
Thanks NTF. Of course they're fortunate enough to have multiple cameras *and* they don't have to hold a camera in one hand and the golf ball in the other, LOL. I've filmed a couple of these which were so poorly done I never even posted them.
my dog used to catch birds and several times I had to extract them from his mouth- he didn't actually know what to do with it once he got one but I'm sure he was happy in the conquest!
Glad you were able to give that bird a great send off! He or she was very lucky with three cats around, i know my two cats would have ate him for sure!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thankfully it's pretty rare for my cats to eat one, although it happens once in a while and makes a real mess in the house. I do however had a dead one show up about once every 2 months on average. It seems to be the smallish birds that survive. They probably struggle less and require a gentler grip inside the cat's mouth.
The 3CoolKats are FAR too cool to even consider listening to little ol me, LOL. I've done several releases this summer already which I didn't get around to filming. And of course I never film the ones which are DOA.
LOL! They can't help it - tis their nature but it's good you are able to save so many. Great video - I really enjoyed the close up and then the cat's reactions! :)
Thanks Liz! Too bad I didn't get Suzy's reactions filmed a couple of weeks ago when she brought in a dead bird. It was pretty comical (and kinda gross too) with her and I having a tug of war to see who was going to wind up with it, LOL. I *know* how many bird feathers would have wound up around the house if I had let her win!
I think you're right Billy. That's been the most common bird around here all spring and summer. I've got a video with all sorts of them at my birdfeeders but I've not gotten around to editing it yet.
Aww...I'm so glad that it is okay. I was always under the impression that as soon as a cat's saliva met a birds skin...the bird was a gonner as they say. Hopefully that was just an old wives tale. hugs, Chris
Yep, an old wives tale, disproved by the dozens of birds I've released over the years. I used to hear that if a baby bird falls out of the nest and a human picks it up and puts it back in the nest, the mother bird wil then shun it. I'm not so sure I believe that one either.
I just recently heard that it's a myth about the mother shunning a baby touched by a human. In any case, without your touch the bird would have had no chance at all.
Take it from me, Suzy's teeth are doggone sharp! Most any fingers would feel comfy after that:))) He certainly did a very good job of sitting there and looking cute for his closeup:) I could sense him getting antsy for a takeoff and was a split second away from getting a camera angle where he wouldn't have temporarily went out of the frame when he flew. Still, not too bad though
Thanks Twish! I kept thinking, "please fly, please fly, I don't want to have to put you in a cage and take care of you for 2 weeks, I've got a garden to take care of" And then whew! he flew:)))
Robert, I like that you didn't rush the Sparrow that you let it just chill till it was ready, great video 5 stars... have black n white cat too who brings "gifts" :)
Thanks Johni! He'd been through a pretty traumatic experience. I'm sure I would have required more time than that if something 40 times heavier than me had snatched me up in it's teeth and dragged me into it's lair, LOL.
Yep, they would have loved to recatch it! I'm sure they were pretty disgusted with me for releasing it. You'd think after what must be a couple dozen varmit releases that they'd quit bringing me stuff but nope. They're SOOO proud of themselves when the catch something!
Thanks Sheri! I guess most anything looks inviting after being snatched by some sharp teeth, dragged through the pet door, and deposited on the floor.
