  • God, Jerry Nelson sounds like he's about to MURDER his voice! Peace.

  • i was addicted to sesame street when i was a kid in Israel - watched every episode - and we never had that one... we had only the "mad" song

  • I agree with declanappleseed myself. This song could very well be played or sung at a funeral. I had this same song in my head and I was sort of singing it to myself on that one sad day on February 20th, 2010 when my girlfriend's fathers funeral service took place at the same church that her and her family go to on Sundays. I know I felt sad myself. I still always enjoy hearing this song by Little Jerry and the Monotones no matter what or no matter how I feel.

  • They should sing this at a funeral.

  • @declanappleseed

have to be for just the right person, the kind you know would love this song

  • Frankie Valli, anyone? LOL

  • Little Jerry and the Monotones Rules

  • 45rpm of this cut on Sesame Street Records books for over $100.00!!!

  • 2:08 Blue guy's hat falls off.

  • If you listen closely to the Monotones when they sing "Sit down and cry" near the end, you can barely make out Richard's voice.

  • I can hear it a little.

That's the thing with mixed voices though. Sometimes I can't even make out Chrissy's voicei n some parts.

  • I can, a little bit.

  • I can definetly tell that also, in this song, everyone has their correct voices. ;)

  • Ha ha, that's true!

I kind of knew they were the right performers when the song started.

  • I hear more Chris Cerf and Jeff Moss than Richard Hunt.

  • Just listen really closely at the beginning and near the end. Maybe you'll hear a teeny bit of Richard in there. ;-)

  • @TelephoneRock4ever You're Right, I Can Hear Richard in There!

  • @Pikachu4352 I can hear chrissy

  • Wow! haven't seen this one in about 30 or 40 years! I always thought the music went slower on this song (Because it's so SAD!! LOL!!) but I guess I was was wrong. What I love about Little Jerry's music is that almost all of it is based on the great early rock 'n' roll songs, doo-wop music, and falsetto singing that was so popular in the late 50's and early 60's, including the likes of Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Four Seasons, and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers!

  • I've also noticed that Little Jerry usually names stuff that shows how he feels in all of the Monotones' feelings songs, except the Monotones never really get to name anything they are sad of.

  • I mean, they never really got to name anything on what shows how they feel in any of their feelings songs.

  • Well, what about Proud? Chrissy and Richard named three people who were proud of what they did.

  • Well, yeah, but I mean they never named anything abou themselves on how they themselves feel.

  • Oh, okay, I saw them now, wattamack4! Ha ha.

I can't imagine a mad Little Jerry without eyelids. If they left the eyes that way, then it would've freaked out a lot of kids! I'm so glad they chose not to do that!

  • I've noticed that in all of the Monotones' feelings songs, Little Jerry has eyelids.

  • Not in Mad, wattamack4. At least, I don't think so.

  • You just gotta look closely, and you can see them. ;)

Also, I was gonna mention, Little Jerry would look pretty scarey if they didn't include eyelids in mad.

  • I hope I'm not asking for too much, but I'd like to see Sad in high quality.

  • SnugglySara, you're not alone! I've got a crush on these guys now, especially on Little Jerry.

Throughout the entire video, Rockin' Richard has the saddest look on his face. Poor guy.

  • It's interesting to see how the puppets on the show have different facial expressions, based on the way the puppeteers put on the eyelids on the puppet's face/faces.

  • Yeah, it makes them more human-like. I like that.

  • You have my sympathy, Little Jerry.

And 1:56 through 2:04, ain't it the truth.

  • But, I can't make out Little Jerry's last line in the lyrics at 1:56 - 2:04.

"When ??????? happen, it's okay to be sad" Can someone fill in this blank?

And the first part of the chorus line @ 1:05 "my very best friend.... left town"? Can anyone correct me on this, too?

  • "When rotten things happen".

And it actually is "My very best friend left town".

  • "My very best friend left town" - That's what I thought.

  • It's "Lot's of things happen, it's okay to be sad."

  • I know what I heard. It really is, "When rotten things happen, it's okay to feel sad." Be careful, because that part at the end of the sentence may make you cry, when poor Little Jerry hits a high one. ;-)

  • I had a wee crush on these guys as a kid! *lol*

  • Jerry sounds close to Miss Mousy when he sings with a high voice, doesn't he?

  • That's Jerry Nelson for ya'

  • rmutulo: The Muppeteers are good at transitioning voices. In "Telephone Rock", Little Jerry sounds a bit like Gobo, whilst here, he sounds like a really, really young Robin The Frog...both character voiced by JERRY Nelson, Little Jerry's performer.

  • LOVE THIS ONE!!!

(I got the 45 in a Sesame St. 45 case that came with several Sesame St. 45's.

    Cool Picture cover too.)

  • Yeah, the redhead is singing like Frankie Valle. :-) He's fun to imitate - Billy Joel sang like Frankie on his Innocent Man album.

  • There's only one thing about Little Jerry that threw me for a loop. In this video, his singing voice sounds like a falsetto. It reminds me of Frankie Valle! But in "Telephone Rock" his voice was more youthful, if I'm not mistaken. Could you explain this?

  • This actually goes as early as Season 4, so it might either be 1972 or 1973.

  • Must you always correct me when I give a comment?

  • Geez, I'm not trying to sound snarky or anything. :/

  • Well, I apologize if I have offended you in anyway whatsoever.

  • this sounds the muppet babies ending

  • At 2:28 Big Jeffy is actually saying "Oh Little Jerry JUST LOOKING AT YOU makes me feel so sad." Then he says "I just wanna cry," and everyone breaks down crying.

  • About time somebody posted this, my favourite of the LJatM numbers. Jerry sure has some lungs.

  • This is also perfect for anyone who died or maybe a YouTube user who got suspended from YouTube.

  • Let me see if I got this straight. The blue guy is Big Jeffy, the lavender guy is Little Chrissy, and the orange guy dressed like a caveman is Rockin Richard, right?

  • Yes. But, Chrissy is just Chrissy. ;)

  • Love it! <3

  • Was that everyone giving each other a hug at the end?

  • Yes, it was. :-)

  • I really dug the lavender guy's threads! I used to dress like that when I was younger........sort of.

  • aw...I want to give Little Jerry a hug! =( <3

  • If you look real close at Little Jerry, you can almost see tears forming on his face.

  • these guys are playing at some hole in wall casino off the strip in Vegas now, its so sad.......

  • OMG! thank you so much for posting this video I've been looking for this one to come back for years. I only saw it a maybe once or twice on Sesame Street, then never again. Im actually not sad but happy to see this one again. Where did you find this? (big hugs to you!)

  • Poor Little Jerry. :(

    Also,thanks for the post.

  • I don't think they'd wanna be near a whale crying. It'd go BLUBBER, BLUBBER!

  • Where on Earth did you get this? Great find!

  • He just used a screen capture program and recorded it from the SS site. You can see he covered the logo up.

  • Oh! Nice I just noticed. Oh well, could have figured it out for myself.

  • Nice song! Can Jerry Nelson sing or what?

  • @antsamthompson9 Yeah, you go Jerry, Matt Vogel couldn't possibly pull off falsetto like you could, btw poor Litlle Jerry and the Monotones

  • @muppetlover16 That's true.

  • Did you notice how when Big Jeffy started speaking, his hat started wobbling and then fell off?

  • Well I'm anything but SAD after getting to finally enjoy viewing this one again. Thank you.

My favorite part is the very beginning: Booo hooooo! Wahh ahhhhh!

I also like "I wipe the tears from my eye yi yi yi yi yi yi yi yi yi..."

  • I thought it was like "oooh, oooh, whoa, whoa"
