I agree with declanappleseed myself. This song could very well be played or sung at a funeral. I had this same song in my head and I was sort of singing it to myself on that one sad day on February 20th, 2010 when my girlfriend's fathers funeral service took place at the same church that her and her family go to on Sundays. I know I felt sad myself. I still always enjoy hearing this song by Little Jerry and the Monotones no matter what or no matter how I feel.
Wow! haven't seen this one in about 30 or 40 years! I always thought the music went slower on this song (Because it's so SAD!! LOL!!) but I guess I was was wrong. What I love about Little Jerry's music is that almost all of it is based on the great early rock 'n' roll songs, doo-wop music, and falsetto singing that was so popular in the late 50's and early 60's, including the likes of Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Four Seasons, and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers!
I've also noticed that Little Jerry usually names stuff that shows how he feels in all of the Monotones' feelings songs, except the Monotones never really get to name anything they are sad of.
I can't imagine a mad Little Jerry without eyelids. If they left the eyes that way, then it would've freaked out a lot of kids! I'm so glad they chose not to do that!
It's interesting to see how the puppets on the show have different facial expressions, based on the way the puppeteers put on the eyelids on the puppet's face/faces.
I know what I heard. It really is, "When rotten things happen, it's okay to feel sad." Be careful, because that part at the end of the sentence may make you cry, when poor Little Jerry hits a high one. ;-)
rmutulo: The Muppeteers are good at transitioning voices. In "Telephone Rock", Little Jerry sounds a bit like Gobo, whilst here, he sounds like a really, really young Robin The Frog...both character voiced by JERRY Nelson, Little Jerry's performer.
There's only one thing about Little Jerry that threw me for a loop. In this video, his singing voice sounds like a falsetto. It reminds me of Frankie Valle! But in "Telephone Rock" his voice was more youthful, if I'm not mistaken. Could you explain this?
At 2:28 Big Jeffy is actually saying "Oh Little Jerry JUST LOOKING AT YOU makes me feel so sad." Then he says "I just wanna cry," and everyone breaks down crying.
Let me see if I got this straight. The blue guy is Big Jeffy, the lavender guy is Little Chrissy, and the orange guy dressed like a caveman is Rockin Richard, right?
OMG! thank you so much for posting this video I've been looking for this one to come back for years. I only saw it a maybe once or twice on Sesame Street, then never again. Im actually not sad but happy to see this one again. Where did you find this? (big hugs to you!)

If you listen closely to the Monotones when they sing "Sit down and cry" near the end, you can barely make out Richard's voice.
TelephoneRock4ever 2 years ago
I can hear it a little.
That's the thing with mixed voices though. Sometimes I can't even make out Chrissy's voicei n some parts.
wattamack4 2 years ago
I can, a little bit.
TelephoneRock4ever 2 years ago
I can definetly tell that also, in this song, everyone has their correct voices. ;)
wattamack4 2 years ago
Ha ha, that's true!
I kind of knew they were the right performers when the song started.
TelephoneRock4ever 2 years ago
I hear more Chris Cerf and Jeff Moss than Richard Hunt.
muppetfan33 2 years ago
Just listen really closely at the beginning and near the end. Maybe you'll hear a teeny bit of Richard in there. ;-)

I mean, they never really got to name anything on what shows how they feel in any of their feelings songs.
wattamack4 2 years ago
Well, what about Proud? Chrissy and Richard named three people who were proud of what they did.
TelephoneRock4ever 2 years ago
Well, yeah, but I mean they never named anything abou themselves on how they themselves feel.
wattamack4 2 years ago
Oh, okay, I saw them now, wattamack4! Ha ha.
I can't imagine a mad Little Jerry without eyelids. If they left the eyes that way, then it would've freaked out a lot of kids! I'm so glad they chose not to do that!

wattamack4 2 years ago
Not in Mad, wattamack4. At least, I don't think so.
TelephoneRock4ever 2 years ago
You just gotta look closely, and you can see them. ;)
Also, I was gonna mention, Little Jerry would look pretty scarey if they didn't include eyelids in mad.
wattamack4 2 years ago
I hope I'm not asking for too much, but I'd like to see Sad in high quality.

SnugglySara, you're not alone! I've got a crush on these guys now, especially on Little Jerry.
Throughout the entire video, Rockin' Richard has the saddest look on his face. Poor guy.

Yeah, it makes them more human-like. I like that.

You have my sympathy, Little Jerry.
And 1:56 through 2:04, ain't it the truth.
tpirman1982 2 years ago
But, I can't make out Little Jerry's last line in the lyrics at 1:56 - 2:04.
"When ??????? happen, it's okay to be sad" Can someone fill in this blank?
And the first part of the chorus line @ 1:05 "my very best friend.... left town"? Can anyone correct me on this, too?
tpirman1982 2 years ago
"When rotten things happen".
And it actually is "My very best friend left town".
wattamack4 2 years ago
"My very best friend left town" - That's what I thought.

It's "Lot's of things happen, it's okay to be sad."
