I'm from New Mexico and Native and learning how to tan from another Native guy. We removed the hair off our hides. In fact, my hide is in brain water right now. That's lady's technique is all wrong. Right tools but all wrong. Lol.
Doesn't matter which side of the fence you all want to fight about, this is still a pretty lame video, it didn't actually tell any steps, talk about any of the processing or anything. This is more of a home movie than anything else.
giant648: So according to you, the native americans never had leather? That's your argument? Leather is fur with the hair scraped off you boob. :P You can't wear a garment of deerskin with the hair still attached because it falls off during the buckskin softening process which requires you to BREAK a hide, literally, over an object like a tree stump. The hair shafts can't take that kind of abuse, not of deer and elk, it's different than the hairs of fur bearers, which can take a beating.
@alikokos any of the fur-bearers are good to tan if you want the hair. Fox, beaver, coyote, raccoon, skunk, opossum, squirrel, ermine, nutria, wolf, mink, lynx, bobcat, muskrat & river otter, badger, fisher and marten. These animals you can buy legally as they are not at risk of going extinct. Bobcat, otter & lynx need a CITIES tag for legal sale raw. You can buy these raw furs at fur sales or online: ebay, or taxidermy . ne t. Skins are thinned on the skin side to be flexible for sewing.
get over it, people, this is what people did in the not-too-distant past to survive. it does not suck, and you insult all NATIVE AMERICANS when you say that, you ignorant fool from hell.

I love to tan hides. I am also native american , but I think you should be a little more discriptive as not to confuse.

Deer fur is hollow and will break off easily. The fur will come off later if you don't take it off during the tanning process.
