WHY can't musicians today make music like this? This version in spanish and the englisg version by the Ray Charles Singers are the prime examples of prime music.
Throw in Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison and Jay Black's Cara Mia and you can have an evening of excellent singing and music.
the piano guy has some of those new "rapist-glases" on. im shure in privat he's driving a "serial killer van" and wearing a "there's-something-wrong-with-this-guy-hat".
no serious, awesome shows they made. i deiscovered them this evening (in germany) and they're so hilarious. totally charismatic and professional...also the piano dude ;)
we need more of this stuff today for the newer generations.
I was pissed as Ricardo about the song being wrecked because it was all that he said it was and he was really singing it fantastically, but they do have their funny gags...
Maravillosa versión de esta canción pendientes .... el canto es hermoso, la letra y la melodía son igualmente hermosos. ¡Qué buena música sobre gran músico. Gracias por fijar.
My wife is from Mexico and we went and saw The Smother's Brothers when they were playing in Jacksonville Fla. Dick was in the lobby talking to everyone and was very kind to everyone. I introduced him to my wife who had never heard of The Smothers Bros. in Mexico. He was wonderful enough to dedicate this song to my wife and we will never forget it. I show this to my wife's family whenever we go down to Mexico and it is very popular.
I have had the pleasure and also the privilege of knowing Dick Smothers, visiting his home and he visiting mine. Was surrealistic to watch a television legend in my living room playing with my then 2 year old daughter. Was such a pleasure to know him to be a very real man, not at all pretentious, sincere and a pleasure to know as a friend. Different to see his off stage persona, to be that of a funny man, unlike his more straight man character. God bless you Dick and Tom. Enjoy retirement.
Man this stuff is timeless! And what stinks is that if someone were to try to bring this back, people would say, "Oh they're just trying to be like the Smothers Bros..." And they'll get ridiculed! People who try and bring this stuff back are shut down by the ones who want it back! Thats what has happened with my experience anyway...
Not only is their comedy fantastic, but their musicianship is better than a lot of 'musicians' out there today. This is a fantastic arrangement and the harmonies are great. They could be successful at legitimate musicians.
@Woody615 Personally, I think they are. with a lot more humour than most!!!! The harmonies as you pointed out are perfect..... more please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had this on VHS for years.. aired on PBS back in the 80's. Have never been able to locate it.. PBS was very little help.. This is such an incredible program.. followed up by Mason Williams on the guitar. Wow.
This is soooooooo funny. I can't stop looking for these guys. Their hilarious. Poor wandering one is awsome too. Boil that cabbage down gets stuck in my head while I'm working, Their timing is tremendous. This is old time genuine talent.
I'm interested in buying a DVD of this show. Can anyone tell me the name of this particular performance. I only want the performance of the Smothers Brothers with the Boston Pops. Thanks!
Saw them at the Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield Maine last night. From the opening to the final wave as they left the stage it was non-stop funny. Still sharp as ever and they owned the crowd from hello!
It's amazing (these days) that this type of comedy still exists. It's still as good as I remember the Smothers Brothers to be when I used to watch the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Not a curse word at all and still can make you roll on the ground laughing.
Well, Flight of the Conchords don't use swear words stronger than "mutha'uckas" and they are a contemporary band. Hilarious too. I agree though, the Smother Brothers are great.
Just saw them Saturday night with the Charlotte (NC) Symphony and they were incredible! I laughed all night! They performed this and it was even funnier in person. Tommy is now 69 and Dickie is 71 and the years have taken nothing off their talent or humor!
I was on the front row right in front of Tommy. I couldn't have asked for a better seat. It was hysterical how Tommy kept referring to the conducter as George SCHRAAAAM. Great show!
When he switched to German in the middle of the song and then totally went off on his own tangent, I was almost crying! Not sure what's funnier: Tom and his antics or Dick standing there calmy watching. If I remember correctly, this was the same song that segued into "Dueling Banjos" with the pianist. I loved the video retrospective too. It really was a great night!
I lost it when he started yodeling. Then he started speaking in very broken Spanish and started imploring Dick by saying "Ricardo" slowly, like something off a Spanish soap opera. I'm glad I got to see them. "Dueling Banjos" happened during "Poor Wandering One"
They did this song when I saw them in Peekskill (much to my glee and delight). However, they hadn't done "Boil that Cabbage Down" which spawns the whole "Take it naked bacon" joke from this routine. So Tommy Smothers said something different, and I forgot what it was (I foolishly said "Take it naked bacon" under my breath).
I'm pretty sure it was called The Bonnie Hunt Show and yes it is the same song, but I think Tom did more languages(they were janitors). I routinely look to see if somebody posted that clip.
I never saw this one before, I just can't stop laughing! The piano player is priceless! I love these guys! Saw them live with Jack Jones back in '63 or '64! Still love 'em! Thanks for the post
Every time they do a sketch it's like they're doing it for the first time ... never gets old. And they pull it off perfectly over and over. True performers!
Cool! A danish group called Linie 3 with three dansih actors have also made this sketch. But they made that with the piano-player in another show in 2001, but it was not a piano-player. It was a drum-player called Niels Ratzer. And he told two of the actors Thomas Eje and Anders Bircow to reck a danish song called "Når lygterne tændes" (When the lights are lighting up)
I like that slight venture into German at 1:48. It was so serious at the beginning, but then he said those words and then it became funny again! Thank you Tommy Smothers for ruining the mood!!! And yes, that was a compliment.
I am glad to have seen them on "Life with bonnie" Otherwise I wouldnt have known of them... Sorta funny. I NEVER watched Life with Bonnie.. The ONE show I watched had them on it :D Musta been destiny.
