To the people who comment against this musical piece: WHY ARE YOU EVEN WATCHING IT THEN? There's this thing, called an exit button, at the top of your screen.....
well, music is an expression, not a satisfying object for audience any more, yes, not any more. and this is how penderecki expresses (actually expressed) himself.
My mind is completely blown. I know and appreciate some 20th century classical, but it's not often that it sounds as exciting and full of surprises like this. It's brilliant.
@beto84jazz The oboist is Mariusz Pedzialek. This is from a DVD called "Penderecki Conducts Penderecki". This is the only piece in the program which Penderecki doesn't conduct.
This cracks me up as a composer; the oboe (my favorite instrument) WoooOOOooOOOOoooOOOoooOOOooOWW its hilarious the glissando! The oboe is so monotone and angry
I'm not going to lie, as an oboe player, I am not impressed with this piece. I mean, I am impressed with the player's technical capability to play it, and I can understand some of the theory and thought behind it, but one of the reasons I love oboe and play it is for its emotional tone quality and lyrical ability. And the player has moments where you can tell that he is really good in those things. I also agree with laqerhill about the bassist.
@luoboeguy I'm not going to lie. As a saxophonist and pianist (and composer) this song is totally freaking awesome! What's great about it is that it sounds like Penderecki took a Blow-Pen and just aimed it at the paper, and hoped it came out ok, lol
@f15r18 I must disagree with your comment. If only the composer can feel connected to the piece of music, then his "art" is useless. But, I do like this piece and Penderecki's work very much.
this is actually very hard to comprehend and maybe too chaotic, but once you hear it and understand the complexity and balance, maybe until then you`ll be able to like it
if this is garbage, why does it have 76,000 views? and why have i listened to it maybe 10 times? you dont have to like it, but to call it GARBAGE??? someone else's art???? i dont get it...

And even if there weren't any system, melody, or underlying theme it doesn't matter because it still sounds emotional. Music shouldn't be a play in how one should write around a bunch of traditions, that's dumb.
1) there's a jazz bassist who came to the wrong stage
2) the oboist is like "hey dudes check out my skillz"
3) the strings are so taken aback by the oboist's obvious skillz that they misread the music drastically to the point where they even forget what part of the instrument to bow
1) a capriccio (or any other classical form) for an instrument is meant to highlight that instrument and be accompanied by the orchestra; this is not a rock or pop show where some musicians like to supress the others, get some pseudo status, girls and money after a huge guitar solo;
2) before writing, you should know what you are talking about; listen carefully to Stravinsky, read the Dadaist and Futurism manifests and, therefore, learn about modern vanguards;
@laqerhill 3) there's a deep formation behind (and within) the chaos of modernist poetry and music; these musicians know exactly what are they doing, as Penderecki knows his art.
@gabrielkrios You have misunderstood me. My comment from a year ago is nothing more than a joke. I love Penderecki--once in my life I hope to have the opportunity to either perform in an orchestra or at least hear live his St. Luke Passion--and I fully understand and appreciate his use of all the sounds you can get out of that kind of small string ensemble. However, I must stand by my comment that the bassist's part is remarkably jazz-inspired.
@gabrielkrios I have read the manifestos for the Dada and Futurist movements--while they do reflect the same kind of avant-garde aesthetic that Penderecki manifests in his music, those artistic styles, particularly Dada, had their own radical music which is shocking in a different way than this. They both wanted to move music away from the formal structures that pervaded romanticism and even more traditional moderism (Stravinsky, etc.)
@elliedwa You're absolutely right - my comment from 2 weeks ago is nothing more than a reminder and a suggestion for those who don't know the avant-garde (for those, in other hand, who try to judge it with neoclassical or pop parameters).

You can tell because a Viennese oboe has a large bulb on the top that is flat at the very top where the reed goes. This one has the smaller modern design next to the reed.. It would be easier to do those slides on a Viennese oboe because the keys are open like a clarinet, but he does a very good job with those as that is be far one of the most difficult things to do well on oboe.
A ten utwór i Hiroszime uwielbiam najbardziej z twórczości Pendereckiego :-)

Wow... just, wow. I fully get expected to get voted down for this, but this is /terrible/. The technical skill of all the players involved is obviously of a great caliber, but that can't make this... auditory travesty any better. Even under the loosest of definitions, this would have a hard time being considered music, saved only by the fact that it's written down on paper. This is the musical equivalent of throwing rocks at a pane of glass and calling it art.
i'm no expert, but it think that this comes as close to bridging music and emotion into one form. i came to knoe penderecki through the movie "heavy metal". it was a novella that was deleted from the theatrical release, and included on a special edition. but i'm no stanger to auvent garde music i.e. cale, glass, branca... and thas the class that i place him in...in other words, god-like.

It's amazing how Penderecki uses all those things that were deemed impossible or hideously difficult on the oboe: Flutter tongue, glissandi over large intervals (A walk in the park for a clarinettist, but a pain on the oboe)...
I would like for someone to explain to me how anyone can like this. It sounds messier than a group of musicians preforming separate atonal pieces at the same time ._.
Hi Adrian..well the descriptor "messier" is definitely up for debate. I will say it's an immensely complex undertaking to compose something that ultimately sounds atonal and "messy". Personally, I think Penderecki is our greatest living composer.
This would make brilliant film music. For music where Donald Sutherland could be in the film. Like a film I forgot the name to where the dwarf woman stabs him in the end. It definitely has a similar sound the X files theme when they pluck the strings at 2:00 minutes and at 5:00 minutes in the piece, I even find it is the chromatic upward sound which produces such a chill. Also at the moment of 6:50 it sounds very hitchcockish and Jaws. This is due to staccato movements with cello and violin, bril
not something you should listen to at nearly 1 am when every one is alseep and your windows wide open to a dark country back yard full of junk and cars.
too bad he doesn't have a higher stand or someone to flip his music page, haha.
at some point I can't tell wether the squeaks were intentional, but otherwise, excellent job. I couldn't see myself playing this piece though, too odd for me. xD
I prefer the more original pieces without the beeping and randomness. Great job anyway, though!
check out Ligeti...you will love his "string quartets"...however I think they are better constructed!...lol...oh! they are on Itunes...The Hagen Quartet does a great job!...
Hmm, appreciate his work in horror films but he seems to be hung up, or limited to that. DOesn'the doanything else? H ewill always have The Shining. People wern't in the audience to heart this, were they?
So, you've automatically become the ultimate judge of other people's musical tastes? I like Penderecki's work, but I also like "unknown" composers. There's too many good composers out there to like, and not enough fame to go around.
Why aren't there more than 5 stars!

It may be great art. Who knows. Great art is all opinion anyway! Right?

Dude, who knows what art is, pffff... It's one of those questions...

Adrian7462 3 years ago
Hi Adrian..well the descriptor "messier" is definitely up for debate. I will say it's an immensely complex undertaking to compose something that ultimately sounds atonal and "messy". Personally, I think Penderecki is our greatest living composer.
kenrubes 3 years ago 4
It is atonal and messy, but it does have amazing tension. I wouldn't listen to it everyday but I can appreciate it.

I expected the Mission Impossible theme to start!

Don't Look Now is definately Penderecki material. Both Penderecki's compositions and that movie are incredibly and delightfully disturbing.

not something you should listen to at nearly 1 am when every one is alseep and your windows wide open to a dark country back yard full of junk and cars.
he realy sets the mood. Good Job ._.;;;

I think this is the most ridicolous piece of music ever written
sincerly, I have laughed all the time while I saw it LOL
jolythefreeman 3 years ago
too bad he doesn't have a higher stand or someone to flip his music page, haha.
at some point I can't tell wether the squeaks were intentional, but otherwise, excellent job. I couldn't see myself playing this piece though, too odd for me. xD
I prefer the more original pieces without the beeping and randomness. Great job anyway, though!
ccXoboe 3 years ago 2
With Penderecki, the chaos is usually intentional.

I figured that, it works for him though.

Just impressionant !!
percevallemyope8 3 years ago
Does anyone know of any other composers that made dark music like this?
Cizcan 3 years ago
Wojciech Kilar, he makes rather movie soundtracks, but i just felt in love with his polonaise from "Pan Tadeusz" (not dark, but powerfull as hell).
I`m sure you`ll like his music from "Dracula" ;)

check out Ligeti...you will love his "string quartets"...however I think they are better constructed!...lol...oh! they are on Itunes...The Hagen Quartet does a great job!...

This music must be incredibly fun to play.

Wicked piece! That oboe player is a machine! Penderecki is a great composer, whether writing in an avant-garde or neo-romantic style.

bullshit this is music of the culture-snobs. Drop the name penderecki at a party and you might impress a few people, but you're not fooling me!
revoltz7 3 years ago
So, you've automatically become the ultimate judge of other people's musical tastes? I like Penderecki's work, but I also like "unknown" composers. There's too many good composers out there to like, and not enough fame to go around.
tubafatness 3 years ago 10
There's too many to hate, and not enough scorn to go around.

can you please give me the names of these unknowns? i want to know more.

I have to agree with you, most of the people just name this composer to impress, without even listening.
It is a good work, but not that impressive.
