Basically in Halo 3 you'll see when your going to custom games it'll say Xbox Live, System Link or Local(Offline) matches.

Local just means offline.

you hold the left stick as if you were going to crouch, and DOWN on the d-pad normally i use my thumb on the d-pad, my finger on the thumbstick and my middle finger on the left bumper
