damn, mine runs at room temperature with web browsing (not watching videos) and goes up to 129 degrees Fahrenheit MAXIMUM when I doe the following (transfer large files, edit videos *import-export videos*, play full HD video *1080p 30fps+* and converting videos. BTW I cant overclock on my D845PEBT2 motherboard. Intel, and dell motherboards have no overclocking options so if you want to overclock get a different board that works with the same cpu.
well i belive it turns off because it doesnt use the cpu much but when it needs to use the cpu more than usual the fan kickes on because more heat travels through the cpu so the fan cools it down
I have this same processor, P4 1.8, in a HP Vectra VL420, keeps shutting off, between 30 minutes and a couple hours of up-time, something is obviously wrong with it :-( sucks!
I have a P4 505, overclocked it from 2.66 GHz to 3.00 GHz. Temperature is 78C in idle state, but rises to (more or less) 81C when running CPU-intensive games. And it's still alive. =P
75C is hot, 85C+ is dangerous to be running at for long periods of time, 95C is critical and thermal shutdown occurs on most P4s.
It depends what processor you have, but none have ever burned out from being used too much, and overclocking doesn't reduce the life.
Melting would only occur at 250C or more... But permanent damage can be incurred between 95-105C, depending on part quality. Some CPUs can withstand 110C+ just fine, some video cards can even withstand 150C (like Nvidia 6600GT)
Lmao I have the 3.2 ghz prescott w/ HT and it never gets over 70C even when Oc'd to 4 Ghz. Once I needed to replace the fan because it reached between 90-100C before shutting itself off. At those temps it CAN melt but if it isn't hot for too long then it won't. So far it works error-free with my new motherboard.
AMD's tend to be hotter. i remember having a AMD XP 1.6GHz and some of the plastics onboard i.e. cable ties had melted! I brought that about 7 years ago but the cpu burnt out about a year ago now :(
try taking off the heatsink+fan, cleaning off the thermal paste (lint free cloth+rubbing alcohol,) rubbing in circular motions, then reapplying cpu paste, like artic silver 5, just the size of a small grain of rice, then reapplying the heatsink+fan.
Damn dude, I have my 3.2 Ghz with HT overclocked to 3.53 (10% OC) and it stays about 40 C normally and sometimes gets as hot as around the mid 60 C's but never got up in the 70's... Although I think I did get to the CPU Slowdown temperature.. but I'm not sure.
You think thats bad i had a intel celeron 1.4ghz it ran at an average of 80c i got some software to make the fans run at full speed all the time nothing changed
I would check the CPU fan inside and make sure its spinning up to speed. Also clean any Dust on the heatsink I seen them after 6 months of use they are just covered with dust. And if that does not cure it. I would remove the heatsink Clean the thermal paste off with alcohol on the cpu and heatsink and reapply with artic silver or thermal paste just enough that the paste contacts the CPU heatspreader and heatsink. I would also change the fan speed in bios to run at full speed all the time.
The problem causing it to overheat was that I have a processor intensive visualization installed for Media Player which uses 100% of the processor. Without the visualization it runs normally.
well what exactly do you have? an AMD 6000 beats a 6600, and the 6000 dropped DRASTICALLY in price as to be EXTREMELY competitive with the 6600. its now possible to find them for far under 200$ so f off with comments that belong in some forum five months ago

but don't do it everyday!
usually the processor will explodes at about 85-95C only...WITH FANS...
but without...55C only..,

The problem causing it to overheat was that I have a processor intensive visualization installed for Media Player which uses 100% of the processor. Without the visualization it runs normally.
