i went to honda to have the check engine light checked and they wanted 100 dollars for it. you can buy a scan tool for thet so why would anyone go there?
Before I start my comment let me qualify myself. I am an ASE Master Certified Tech. I am also L1 certified. On any 1996 or newer vehicle the check engine light can come on for over 100 reasons. Some causes are very minor, some are major. if the light blinks this is a sign of a serious problem. the blinking indicates a misfire which can lead to cat converter damage. If it is on solid, and the car seems to run ok, then it is probably on for an emission related failure.
For future reference, there is a green plug in the pass kick panel. Connect it with a jumper wire, the CEL will then flash the problem codes out to you, it's really a great function!
On my 1990 civic the computer has a light on it, just pull back the passenger carpet and count them suckers.
sometimes the CEL is a nuissance problem that is rare, but still trips up the sensor...that's why you should pull the code first, then reset and see if it comes back on.
@pyros46290 Just a couple of things I tried, so as far as I'm concerned, it was "troubleshooting" my check engine light. I hope pulling the fuse worked for ya', good luck!
@Jamesmandana uh, no dude. i dont pull fuses to clear DTCs, i actually diagnose and repair the vehicle, then clear codes with a proper scan tool. the light comes on telling you something is wrong. you didnt fix a damn thing
@pyros46290 Well why are you wasting our time then, and why are you watching this video in the first place? You might want to re-read the warning at the top of the description box! I also make it perfectly clear that this was a temporary, quick fix. I'm not going to get into a battle of wits with you; I never attack anyone who is unarmed.
@looda90 I pulled the battery fuse to reset the computer. It worked for a little while, but eventually I had to take it to a mechanic because my gas mileage became less efficient. The O2 sensors were faulty and he replaced them, and it's been running great ever since then. You can take your car to an auto parts store and have them check the code or check 2carpros(dot)com/topics/O2sensor(dot)htm
yes.. im suoer pissed.. i replaced my winshield cuz it was cracked nasty.. replaced my tail lights cuz they are smoked... all so i can get a inspectiom.. its a 09 corolla.. an it failed.. my o2 sensors are dirty.. had them cleaned an it passed ")
if the problem is still there the light will come on again sooner or later.you can also erase the check engine light by disconecting the battery cable for 10 minutes but if the problem is still there it will come on again later.gotta fix the problem first then erase.
It's the battery fuse, just pull it out for a second or two and it will reset your computer (should be under the hood, passenger side of a civic). My o2 censors were damaged and I needed to pass a smog test that day. USE CAUTION. You don't want to blow a head gasket or anything major, this is just a temporary quick "fix".
@Jamesmandana Why would you blow a head gasket when it comes to 02 sensors? thats impossible. Have autozone run a code and see what it is. an o2 sensor has nothing to do with blowing a gasket and until the check engine light blinks its not detrimental to the car
@tonebro thanks for your suggestion. If you read my description again, it says that MY car's problem was with the o2 sensors. The only reason I mentioned the head gasket is that a check engine light could be an indicator of a problem (for someone else's car) that could lead to major damage in the future. Thanks for the comment!!
Dude you just saved me $80bucks thanks--you

Sure thing, let's just hope it stays off. My light kept coming back on because of some dirty sensors. Good Luck!

@Jamesmandana yeah. he failed at stating if the light was blinking it would be some major problem with your car.
