  • war may be horrible, but this theatre of war brought the commonwealth together, hard to think of an englishman, a french canadian, a scot, a pakistani and an indian all sharing a foxhole if you know what I mean?

  • Lest we forget. R.I.P To ALL those that never made it back to their families.

  • I've spent many months in the Burmese jungle. Its a beautiful, yet nasty place. The malaria will kill you if the landmines don't.

  • obama is awesome

  • @Obamafanforever what the fuck has Obama to do with the war in Burma ? Or are you just making another stupid statement that has nothing to do with what the videos about??!!!

  • @swollower Obama is reforming our war policy. He would of prevented all of this violence.

  • It's a pity to see the spiteful and narrow minded comments from a few here. Some fronts were worse than others but the underlying reality was that it was an ordeal for the troops involved wherever they were. We should honor their contributions. Period.

As for strategic and political decision making, well, have at it. Criticize and second guess all you want. Write a book even, but only if you know how to use spell check.

  • the ghurkas were shit hot .put the heebie jeebies up the germans in ww1 as well.

they love the old hand to hand. mad basterds all of them

  • is it me or do asians seem to be more of a cold people than us europeans. they did pretty horrible shit to our troops

  • My Father was in burma and Malaya (as was), He fought at Kohima alongside the Indian army and Gurkas against the japanese! My family lost 8 uncles because the japanese executed them! in Malaya..... He told me the Gurkas were the fantastic fighters and the japanese hated to be left alone with them. He also said the Indan troops were very good. There were some American troops with them he said they fought well, much more kit than our guys better food as well. They all deserve a medal.

  • My father fought in Burma,in the 14th Army. known has the'' FOREGOTTEN ARMY''

  • the britsh are are greatest comrads off all time and we will always have each others back i dont care how many anti americans there are in europe i still love are allies and they all did there part in the war we fought side by side to defet the enemy both the germans and the japs god bless them all i think we dishonor are grandfathers when we argue about who did what in the war

  • I'm half swedish half english and my grandad fought in burma as a british soldier, he ended up as a prisoner of war. The japs treated him like shit but he survived. He got heavy psycological scares though. God bless him and god bless britain

  • The Japanese soldiers were nasty, Ive been to Burma many times and the scars from WWII are still there,

  • Comment removed

  • The Burma campaign looked like a rough place to fight

  • My grandfather fought in Burma from 1942-45 and I feel its very true what the narrator says. Burma was not on the vast scale as say the Russian Front, but the feriocity was as brutal if not the worst through out the entire war. it is a great shame we in Britian do not reconise the Burma campagne as much as we do the European war.

  • you are spot on about britian not reconiseing the burma campain ! my grandad also fought with the chindits from 1942-1945, we should have a remembrance day that should be reconised . Did you grandad come home from the war? and did you ever meet him as i didnot meet mine as he sadly died 14 or 15yrs after the war. I hear storys about him from my mum and think of the horro's those brave men must have seen on a daily basis.

  • My grandfather was a British tank Driver in Burma, he was the only tank crew of about 100 to successfully retreat with his tank (the rest destroyed theirs). Now I've joined Australian Army reserves, Armoured Corps!

  • 'World at War', in my opinion still covers WW2 best overall. And I've just seen the entire series. Before it, I've also seen almost every possible documentary on WW2 (including latest), but still there were some new footages found here and lots of testimonies from german soldiers and officers (including high ranking nazis as Albert Speer), as well from allies. For WW2 buffs who want to see how it really was, I highly recommend the entire series.

  • The far East was for us what the Ostfront was for the Germans I think only the soldier of the British Army & US Marines would understand why the Germans & Soviets on the East front did not take prisoners. They where merciless fronts.

  • @Nik123dj

have you seen the documentaries of the Rape of Nanking? that is some sad shit

  • @razziphotos

It really was. War can bring out the worst of man... But sometimes it can bring the good too, like unity and helping hand. Anyway, I wonder if we'll ever learn from history and seek peace.

  • man you got a chip on your shoulder? this series covered loads of battles Britain wasn't involved in. so what's missing, of any consequence at least?

  • you'r a fuckin wanker! i bet ur a yank! who only came into the war in dec 1941. nearly half way through! ur realy are a totaly fuckin wanker and i wish u were in burma 2 see what these men went through u fucking idiot!!!!

  • It's not secret that people like brittains, germans and france are very scary when facing places like deep forest or jungle. E.g germans troops in north (Norway, Finland) were poor and helpless in forest, while finns felt it like safe home. Even russians fought better in forest than germans. But finns were the best. And remember poor americans in Hurtigen forest.

  • I saw this amazing TV serie, here in brazil.

  • Well if not for America, then Germany would have one front...against Russia. At the very least that would of bought Germany enough time to get the bomb. However I appreciate England and all other allies that pitched in and helped. It was a team effort really...

  • not really cleftonrix, you placate us with your 'team effort' comment but your underlying argument is 'if not for America.' Well, sir, if not for the British and Canadians only 2 out of 5 beaches would have been invaded on D-Day.

  • You cant be serious, War starts 1939, America joins late 1941 only because it was attacked. America did alot of good, but really they are comparable to a striker in soccer. The team gets the ball off the other side and gets it up field, then the striker gets it in and claims all the glory.

  • In addition to the British forces -which included British Indian volunteers- and the American volunteers, there were also millions of Chinese soldiers.

  • 30,000 Chinese soldiers, a lot fewer than the British.

  • Burma was the Vietnam of WW-2.

  • Not for the Allies it wasn't.

  • A family member volunteered for Merrill's Marauders serving in the Army battling the Japanese.

  • Dad spent his WWII career in China and flew

the B-25, he almost died once from illness.

He was a good Dad and I miss him, he had not

hatred or ego only did what he was told to do

and help defend a nation that was being raped.

For anyone cursing the USA it does not matter to me as I had a good Father we care about this world top to bottom. Negative statements

about the USA is not the solution a problem

    that mankind created by "thinking".

  • My grand-uncle was a soldier at Kokoda.I hate how the fuckin nips denied ww2, expect us to forget that they ravaged our countries, tourtered our men, raped our women(the army nurses that they caught), caused death and destruction all over Burma, Kokoda...

Now they just expect us to forget it all happened, live on THEIR products, boost THEIR economy while ours witheres and dies, with 99 percent of the population in severe debt, while they immigrate and BUY their way to luxury.

  • Why Japanese need Burma! What is their purpose and mission! HOW MANY BRITISH POW DIE DURING THAT ERA

  • Well,Burma is like a shortcut to India that is why the Japanese need Burma so that they can invade India.

  • My Grandfather was a Royal Marine during the crucial battles of Imphal and Kohima. Dunno whether he took part but he was in the Jungles after that certainly.

  • the bristish used enfield ad bren

  • Burma was full of malaria and other deseases.

  • If anyone is interested I've composed a music track in tribute to WW2 veterans called (Memories of veteran Heroes) dedicated to my late grandparent who fought in WW2. please click on my profile to view the vid with the music. Thanks

  • You have a point there but the way put it, little blunt I suppose. Hope you did not get offended by my saying it.

  • Thanks mate, I guess all the poor ratings I got where from americans who dont agree, but lets face ir, the US gained a lot from joining the war late, and Europe suffered tremendously because of this fact, they stand for freedom and democracy only when they can make a profit out of it.

  • I must thank YOU for taking my comment in good spirit when many people easily get angry on You Tube comment pages for others comments. Thanks and take care.

  • yeah that's true, there's so much spam aswell it's unbelieveable anyway you too take care!

  • "only when they can make a profit out of it", why would u say that? how disrespectful to all of the American military who helped defeat Germany and Japan. Would u have liked it better if we hadn't helped at all? What profit did the US gain?

  • Look mate, one thing is defending the world from fascism, another thing is funding government coup d'etas in countries who elect democratically a leader whose policy is not pro-american, please tell me why the US go invading iraq hmnn funny there's profit involved (oil), why don't the US go "liberating" North Korea, cause the US would loose more than it would gain and yet there is more oppression in North Korea than there was in Iraq, and look at Iraq now, breeding ground for terrorists.

  • oh ok i was wondering if u were making a distinction btwn ww2 & subsequent wars... i agree US policies have been very questionable since then, but I submit as far as ww2, profit wasn't 1st and foremost. however the US did profit @ the end.

  • yeah, I was merely pointing out USA's Isolation policy prior to entry of the war in my first comment, don't get me wrong, I admit without the US things would have been really different in WW2 and we'd probably be having this conversation in german or russian even, and freedom would truly be an ilusion.

  • From a family that had an uncle that became a POW in Malaya in WW@ I thank any country that helped to bring him home. He died soon after due to his ordeal!

  • I very much agree with you melouski. Great britain only settled the bill for the war with America for their help 2 years back. Still a lot of people out there think that americas help was free, it wasnt, not by a long shout.

  • Americans provoke these sorts of comments by saying stuff like 'We saved your ass...'. If you spout out nonsense like that Yanks your not gonna get any respect. Perhaps if you were modest and weren't such chest thumping wankers your military might have some respectability, but as it stands, noone respects it.

  • You're right. I am often embarrassed by the statements of my fellow country men. You tube forums are no different. That sort of hyper-nationalism you are talking about reminds me of 1930s Germany. We could be such a better influence in the world if only our attitude was more humble, and not so jingoistic. Anyhow, nice video.

  • But we did "save your ass"!

  • @kurthanson2005 Get real knobhead!

  • Britain was sent bankrupt by the US.

They had to pay for WW2 aid with their gold reserves and to agree to Roosevelt's demands to give up their colonies.

The Russians on the other hand reneged on their payments to the US.

  • my grandfather was a sgt. of a recon platoon at okinawa in 1945

  • Where can I buy this documenta, Please tell me

  • look on ebay

    Free Hugs From TX

    RundoeTX

  • My father was a Merrill's Marauder.

  • my grandfather and his younger brother where in Burma. it is a forgotten war and other 2.2 million Indian volunteers Absolutely forgotten.

  • GREATEST SERIES EVER. I love this series and can't wait to buy the box set. As for the Allies I can't express my respect for them.

  • damn! i must take off my hat to all the allies who fought to keep us safe from tyranny so we could manufacture our own kind, ala bush.

  • My stepdad's grandpa was a translater & radioman with OSS. He was from Kachin Tribe of northern Burma.

  • My father was a Merrill's Marauder and crossed the Burma Line.

  • my grandpa killed 12 Gis that day

  • Hde must have been American then.

  • I live in China now and will move soon to Kumning near Burma. I have been close to the border in the less dense areas of jungle, the more civilized areas, and it is unbelievable. I just finished a book about Vinegar Joe Stillwell and the fighting there was savage with both sides finding disease and tigers as well as eash other... BIll

  • i cant see how they can do that, they suffered horrific casualities here.the ratio was generally 6:1

  • World War II Burma
