  • top guy..check out shane fenton on here...same guy in the 60s

  • Great stuff. I've got quite a soft spot for Alvin, his songs are feel good and fun.

  • what a happy number :)

  • Joyous, optimistic, life-affirming - everything rock'n'roll should be.

  • It's a great song from Alvin but not many people know that the dog in in this video(HERMAN) went on to become a superstar in Germany with his hit song "woof woof apocalypse"

  • Great song, I remember when this first came out in 1981 when I was 16 years old. I am 46 years old now.

  • meine lehrzeit--geil

  • Very nice...Love it...

  • I loved this song AND Alvin Stardust lol. I'd bet the dog in the clip is also the same dog they used in Shakin' Stevens song Green Door!!!

  • Great song but we are missing scene dogs humpin' each other LOL

  • iirc that is his original ES-175, that he got in the early 60s

  • Wonderful~~~

  • bring back memeriors

  • @johnbaby77 oh my god? THe memeriors come and will kill us all!!!

  • This Voooiceee *-* :D

  • bside was a song called Goose Bumps... hmmm##

    Mikey xx

  • whats the name of this musicstyle? rock´nroll, boogie,??

  • @p4zi easy listening i think

  • @pyepye7. Release this song Pretend in the US at the time

Would have been a huge hit.

  • Would have been a massive hit stateside if it had released there

    Shortsighted or overcautious manager?

Very talented and undervalued as a musician

Maybe if it was added to a movie soundtrack people would sit up

    Mud also lost out

  • Wonderful video.

  • Two decades to late had he appeared in the 50 s he would have made a packet . Very talented guy .

  • @cetieel - He actually did (in the early 60's) as Shane Fenton (and his group the Fentones). This was beat before the Beatles. You may check out wikiwiki...

  • genial

  • GENIAL

  • isti sinan sakić

  • Merci beaucou à MorcegoXPTQ, d'avoir mis Alvin avec ce titre, plein de rythme - A quand Alvin à la télévision française?

  • Blimey, I bought the single and love the song. I would have never guessed it was back in 1981! I remember spinning it on my record player playing it loud in my bedroom. Think my mum must have been driven mad by it! Alvin is a great Elvis fan, which is one of the reasons I have always liked him, as I love everything Elvis. His "message to Elvis" video is worth catching on here. My coo ca choo was one of my early memories and also the green cross code advert! Thanks for the clip. Happy memories!

  • So uplifting love it

  • I took his photograph (in increasingly-taller platforms) when he played Edinburgh's Usher Hall a few years' ago. Changed costumes each song too!

  • he did a brilliant job with this classic tune..

    what a sweeheart.

    xx

  • brilliant,,

  • Did you know Shaky turned this down just before it was offered to Mr. Stardust?

  • This was Alvins best record in my view...love this song.....one of his last from 1981.

  • @GRAHAM5020 awesome..Love it... Thanks for sharing

    Thank you MorcegoXPTO for posting

  • more cool if the dog could sing too

  • good song i also like the carl mann version and the original writers of this song Lew Douglas, Cliff Parman, and Frank Levere they are all legends great 1952 song to sing along to

  • Alvin Stardust rocks

  • i know this song from jimmy and the rockets in the early sixties

  • I wanna know where that jacked up black Vauxhall Viva HB is now!

  • I like it better than the stuff that made him famous back in 74. Nice one !

  • i was born in 1985... but i like this song so much...:D

  • this takes me back a few years now lol

  • Dose anybody out there remember a group called Calico blue ?( Social club band) from Birmingham. They used to start off with this number. Happy days indeed!

  • Video shot in London in about 1980/81 ? I was working with Alvin at the time. Long drive to a gig in Wakefield that evening. Happy days !!!

  • Did he play the guitar?

  • @schusterlehrling Nope. It was Maychbox's Kyle Cook. Alvin's still a mean guitaris though. Check out his Cherry Red session on this very site. Nearly 70 and still rockin' LOL!

  • @willemslie sorry you are wrong it is steve bloomfield playing lead not kyle cook who ever he is

  • ALVIN'S QUITE CUTE :D

  • C'est le gonads de la chien! (Dog's Bollocks,mate!)

  • Don't bloody care wot he looks like! Song's great and that's enough!

  • he made GAY!

  • Excellent!

Thank you for sharing this title!

    I love!

    Regards

  • Used to love this song in my teenage years, love singing along to it even now!! hehe

  • 好き

  • Just look at him - he must be crackers to walk along the road like that. A double-decker bus could be on top of him....anyway this is a great cover of a great song - Alvin always had it, from the early '60s to the present day!

  • A Nat King Cole-song, but the version of 'the racktes' with Jimmy Duncombe is more better than Alvins. Same speed but the voice of Jimmy is almost unreachable

  • It's a very good version, I still prefer Alvin's though!

  • I remember not being able to stop singing this when I was 11, now I remember why - It's catchier than a cold!

  • Is he still around.

  • He was just starting to do the pointing in that video, He got really bad around 74

He got OK again around 84!!!!

  • such a snappy dresser too,

  • Excellent job on this song.

  • What a awesome tune. Did any of you people know this made no3 in the UK charts in September 1981.

  • @ColumRogers no

  • @ColumRogers I remember it well, enjoyed it at the time. There was a huge variety of music around in 81... A good year.

  • blush saying it, but loved this song when it was out

  • remember kids use the green cross code

  • Such a happy song.

Wonder if it was made the year his wife, Susan Hampshire, left him?

  • It wasn't Susan Hampshire - he was married to Liza Goddard

  • You are right!

  • una cancion feliciana

  • i'm just trying to figure the 'concept' of this video...

i understand that he's pretending to have a Rolls Royce but in fact has to hitch it home on a milk-float - but is he pretending to have two dogs? or is it his 'common' dog thats pretending to have a posh girlfriend dog?

OR does he in fact own a Rolls Royce? and is actually pretending he's hitching it home on a milk-float? ...or is that the twist?

  • Checking Him Out

  • just seen alvin live in concert this week-he is all heavy rock now-more cream than soda if you know what I mean-loud and proud..

  • You are kidding.. Alvin Rocks!!! and he's HOT too... had to be influenced by someone.. everybody does.. but still he had his own style.. did i mentioned he is HOT??? did I?

  • Nice song, nice voice, and lovely little lead break. I would've liked to hear him go on with that clever little guitar piece.

  • Alvin is Shakin Stevens' Dad..who knew that ?

  • not right!

His son Shaun became head teacher at Pate's Grammar School in 2006; previously he was also the headteacher at Sir John Lawes school. His other son, Adam, is a drum and bass producer and DJ, known as Adam F...

  • Alvin Stardust is THE MAN and he would easily beat Gary Glitter in a straight fight.

  • Not sure about the street fight but as you say - no contest! I like all Al'is songs, so Alvin is the man for me too. Thats my bias and I'm not looking to change it.

  • Gary Glitter mabye,but not Shakin'Stevens,haha!

  • Great song, super video! Well done Alvin, you've got my vote

  • Wow!

  • Hey the Original was by Carl Mann and it knocks spots off Both Shaky and Alvin, unfortunately it is currently not available on video.

  • Koolsilver, don't fool yourself, go and put your slippers on and watch dads army.

  • Hi I am the original silver surfer, i love Shaky and Alvin, I was playing Rock and Roll Pro before you were even thought of, but I still love you anyway.

  • If you love Alvin praise him. Like I said, you are just fooling yourself. If you look up the word fool,it is somebody who is regarded as lacking good sense or judgment.

  • Bundle! If you resent that Pretend is Alvin's song rather than Shaky's then do yourself a favour and don't listen, bcos you'll only get grief here. You and I love who we love, so its difficult to be objective. It's still amazing with Alvin live though, so I'll be disputing your claim forever, and that is a fact.

  • You know, this makes me laugh when you see an imbecile like Stingdrift coming in here making silly comments. If you listen to Alvin and shaky singing Jeanie Jeanie Jeanie, Alvin is a better singer, just stating a fact. The only reason you are in here is because Alvin is attracting strong interest and attention.

    Now fuck off.

  • Comment removed

  • Stingdrift, the thing is, us Alvin fans like Alvin for is music and versatility. You might like shaky's music a little, but the real reason you like shaky is because you want to sleep with him. All us Alvin fans know you are retarded. Now, I feel sorry for shaky having a false fan like you, point made.

  • So StingDrift, you seem to be forgetting that Alvin already had considerable chart success spread over 15 years before Shaky got there. Perhaps you didn't know that! So Alvin can't be accused of riding on Shaky's success, no way! All due respect to the Shake for being a best selling artist though

  • Well no-one's making you stay, so sod off! I havn't been to see Shaky before and if you are typical of his fans, I won't be bothering. Pleased?

  • hEY LOOK AT THE JACKED UP MK3 TINA ON BIG SLOTS!!!!

  • :))))

  • You can't help but like it.

  • LEGEND!!

  • HE'S MY COUSIN!!

  • He's my uncle!! ...wait a minute we must be related :o)

  • Maybe, maybe.

  • I am the little kid in the Spider-Man t-shirt!!!!!!

Woo Hoo, I will sign autographs if you ask nicely

  • Wydowson, you look cool in that video. I can't believe it is 25 years ago.

  • @Wydowson Can you remember which part of London the video was filmed? That garden with the white ornate walls looks very familiar.

  • @gedhession, The street was College Place in Camden, NW1. The ornate gardens are familiar, but hazy in the mists of time. They might be St Martins Gardens, or possibly a park down towards St Pancras, but I can't remember the name of it.

  • @Wydowson Oh well. Thanks for the reply all the same.

  • @Wydowson Is the green where he plays with the dog on Plender Street, where the Westerham flats have since been built? Is that pub you can see in the background The Parrs Head?

  • Alvin looks too young to be at an oldie night!

  • A great comeback for Alvin Stardust - I saw him a few years ago at an oldie-night.

  • Wolli,It all boils down to the single question, are you telling the truth, I agree with hearnsdaughter.

  • Of course he still looks young and good! But he had his greatest hits in the mid 70's, when I was a teenie. 1974 he reached # 3 with My Coo Ca Choo and # 5 with Jelous Mind here in Germany. Pretend was released in 1981. Greetz Wolli (from Aachen)

  • brings back memories of my youth,,cheers for the posting,,anyone know what number it reached in the charts

  • TOP SONG..........nice, unpretentious video.....the only noticeable difference from the '70s work is the 'bigger' '80s drum sound.

  • Brill video and super version of this one.( From Julie).

  • Alvin's version of this song is the best.

  • i remember alvin back in the 70s such good years they were things have so much changed now.just memories now

  • canny turn that shane fenton.

  • Check ou Jimmy Duncombe doing this song 15 years before Alvin! - its an awsome version.

  • Original by Nat King Cole!!

This song was offerd first to Shakin´ Stevens who turned it over to Alvin! ;-)

  • LMAO

  • I love the way the little girl is kind of wondering who went "boo" and starts to wonder if its Alvin. She's got that "was that you expression?" to a "T" The whole video is pure magic.

  • Love the Dog shots .

The snare drum sounds a bit ELO in places.

  • I love this, but I wish it would stay and not keep disappearing. Its such a happy song and a beautiful video.
