  • the entire scene was funny from start to finish....shame TV like this doesn't exist anymore

  • why does facts like this matter??

  • EPIC LOL!!!

  • 21 seconds of sustained laughter until dialogue resumed. Ed Ames tomahawk episode on the Tonight Show lasted 41 seconds.

  • @drivein4 I count a whole minute of laughter. You don't hear the laughs stop for a whole minute, and I only counted starting exactly where Lucy crushed the eggs. People were laughing before that.

  • @drivein4 it was a minute.

  • Lucy haha

  • Maybe funny at the time terrible now

  • how long was the laugh? i have heard that they actually edited some of it for being too long!!!

  • Classic XD

  • title of this video is wrong, longest laugh occurred on a johnny carson show with ed ames and a tomahok throwing bit gone wrong

  • why does she always have to be up to something. lol

  • I have to wonder why people who dislike or don't appreciate I Love Lucy seek out video clips to leave disparaging remarks on them. what purpose does it serve? I'm not going to stop watching it because some other bozo thinks Family Guy is funnier and I'll have a sudden epiphany. ILL is good clean fun. It's not perfect or a masterpiece. But it's a show that has given me a lot of laughs, and I'm not alone in that.

  • @apollo100 , I mostly agree with you, but on one point you're wrong: "I Love Lucy" is most certainly a masterpiece. If it's not a masterpiece, then nothing in the history of television is a masterpiece.

  • Despite the fact that I wasn't born till 1990 I got say that this is TOO HILARIOUS! No wonder this show went down in history as one of the greatest shows of all times. Is just a shame that we don't have a lot of these great shows today. The only one that we can say that it was a lot like I Love Lucy was The Nanny, even though it was underrated.

  • Anyone who doesn't find it funny probably doesn't understand the setup. Probably a good idea to include in the accompanying description.

  • @3:02 will always be the funniest moment of this scene to me...I remember the first time I saw this episode as a kid I died at that part! XD

  • the only show i could think of that had a longer laugh was the Dick Van Dyke episode, "That's My Boy?". Rob was positive that his newborn son was mistakedly switched at the hospital. when it came time tell his suspicions to the other parents, he invited them over. when they arrived at the door, Rob opened it up to find black parents! at first, the audience didn't quite know how to respond, but as the idea sank in, the laughter & applause was contagious. try that w/a laughtrack!

  • I love this and i'm 13

i'm so ashamed of society today

    back then comedy was funny

  • Now days comedy means every punchline is about sex. No creativity anymore. Too bad.

  • Classy and classic.

  • omfg rickys expression!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would say it's not just the anticipation that made the audience go nuts, but also the way Lucy found a way to milk the moment for as long as possible without saying a word. When she folds her arms and leans on the eggs, I just lose it. :-)

  • RWSB1793. 07/01/21/2012 A.D. LUCILLE DESIREE BALL-FOREVER THE UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF COMEDY,THE FIRST LADY OF TELEVISION.THE MOST BELOVED FUNNY WOMAN OF ALL TIME.THE GREATEST COMEDIENNE THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN.SHE WILL LIVE IN OUR HEARTS AND MINDS FOREVER!

  • I couldn't stop laughing! This show is hilarious. :D

  • @Prof. This was way after her preganancies.

  • Not to be a buzz kill but this clip is from the Luci-Desi Comedy Hour.

  • @danj1953 ...no sir the lucy desi comedy hour didnt start till the following year, and you can tell because everybody's hair is cut/styled different

  • Oh those r eggs lol

  • @ProfesorFrodoJSchitz lol I thought she was pregnant at first too

  • Was this when she was prego?

  • To all those claiming other moments are longest laugh, chances are those were all "laugh tracks", and not from a true audience.

  • @PhazonInfuser When Carol Burnett descended the stairs with the curtain rod across her shoulders during the "Went With The Wind" sketch, there was no laugh track there. That audience, as always, was live.

  • Well that was stupid. Audiences in the 50's were idiots. What am I saying, with shows like The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother, audiences are just as stupid today.

  • @WanderLink You obviously don't know what GOOD comedy is.

  • @PhazonInfuser

Yeah I do. Mel Brooks. Peter Sellers. Stan Laurel. Groucho Marx. That's good comedy. This is one-note schtick for the idiot masses to comfortably consume without having to think. Every damn episode, Lucy schemes a hikjnk. Gets found out. An O-face is made and/or over-the-top crying. Cuban guy get's pissed and/or resolution. It should be called I Love Predictable Mediocrity.

  • @WanderLink Keep in mind, that's how all good stories work. There's a situation presented to the protagonist (though some might call Lucy an antagonist), and rising actions and plot devices leading up to the eventual climax, where all points are supposed to come together and "shit-hits-the-fan," which then utilizes falling action to reach a resolution.

While yes, I Love Lucy focuses on situational comedy, the writers did a great job, and the actors knew how to get laughs with just the script.

  • @indigothecat Lucille Ball also made giant strides for women actors, showing that women don't just have to be pretty or vain, they can also be the main character, and be just as reckless and bold as a male lead could. Also, she was never very famous until she was older, and it's unfortunate that in order for a woman to be famous today, she has to be no older than 16, and she also has to be emaciated and wear skin-tight clothes.

  • @indigothecat

Comedy is mostly subjective, but I hold that if someone needs a formula for comedy, then they ain't got comedy. Even those I mentioned who were good comedians were guilty of devolving into formula. Peter Sellers w/ Inspector Clouseau. Mel Brooks parody growing stale in the 90's. Groucho Marx playing the same character even 14 movies in. Lucy would have been funny if it was a single movie, but after a while the predictability of situational idiocy gets mind numbing.

  • @WanderLink Well, remember, all successful physists, chemists, and mathematicians love formulas. Not because they are unique and new, but because they work. The "formula" for a sitcom that lasts for several seasons has more to do with the way the audience relates to, and has come to love certain characters. By watching Lucy repeatedly get herself into these ridiculous schemes and making a fool of herself, we learn to love her for it.

  • @indigothecat You also learn that, in spite of the fact that Lucy just never learns to mind, Lucy also has several layers. That of a loving wife, mother, good friend, she really wants to improve herself and help others improve, and she has a good heart.

  • @indigothecat

Sounds like comfort food at best. At worst something that makes one fat/lazy/stupid. Formulas might work for science, but comedy is fundamentally about laughing in the face of chaos. Holding a mirror up to society so they can laugh at their own insanity/futility/chaos/humanity. Lucy's formula kills originality/creativity, training audiences like seals to guffaw at triggers in the formula rather than causing one to think about their own existence in the face of chaos.

  • @WanderLink Well, keep in mind, this show was quite new and original in its time. However, it's not so terrible to take a look at our everyday lives and laugh at them. Sometimes comedy IS comfort food. Both like pop music, pop art, and pop fiction, it's not so much about learning anything new, but being able to kick back and relax. Though, the I Love Lucy Show wasn't the only thing Ball ever did, it's just her most famous role.

  • @WanderLink I do feel that this show was pretty creative, even if they were working within a formula. The writers had to come up with new situations for the characters every week, and still manage to entice the audience into laughter.

  • @indigothecat

Just goes back to comedy being subjective then. But I think the more someone questions the world around them the less funny this kind of thing becomes.

  • @WanderLink Wow, you really analyze this thing like a science. I feel that if a comedy makes you laugh, then it's successful (without all the perverse stuff, I prefer). If it isn't broken why fix it? It's like playing the same sport over and over again, even though the game and rules are the same, every play is different. I think if you analyze it too much, it takes all the fun out of it which is why we have comedy in the first place- to have fun and cheer ppl up! I Love Lucy does that for me :)

  • @Blessings2UForever

But there's a point where "having fun" devolves into hedonism. There is a kind of comedy hedonism, that happens when people turn their brains off and laugh at lady-go-fall-down-make-boom-boom. It's a kind of idiocy I can't get over and even offends me. I feel like the entire human race is in a sloth-like, crawling stagnancy because of this kind of thinking, this willingness to enjoy rather than pursue depth/meaning/complexity, in all mediums.

  • @WanderLink I understand your point, and the sexually-immersed content of modern television has the same effect for me. Personally, I find comedy to be the light-hearted kind of entertainment while dramas tend to hold the deep, meaningful messages that I like to see in films. So I guess it's ok for comedy to be more of an escape as long as there are other films/tv shows that bring you back to gritty reality. Do you watch other types of movies/shows?

  • @WanderLink Not everything requires analysis. The point of comedy is to obtain an unprocessed response. It's cathartic, and enjoyable. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Objecting to pleasure for pleasure's sake is not mature or intelligent. It's self-denial. And if you object to comedy on principle I can't see why you'd go on youtube to watch I Love Lucy clips.

  • @WalterLiddy

It's not about everything requiring analysis, it's about everything requiring awareness. Otherwise a person is just submitting themselves to ignorance and/or hedonism. Dumb laughs for the sake of submitting your mind to mush so you don't have to think or question. You can't see truth without rejecting the self, without looking outside yourself. And I'm not going on Youtube watching Lucy clips, does it say anywhere in the title of the video "Lucy"? No.

  • @WanderLink Well, I think it's fine to laugh at someone getting themselves into trouble in ridiculous ways. Lucy's got the personality of a "schemer," and the role of the schemer is not a new one, but we all have that one friend who just keep coming up with crazy ideas that never work. I Love Lucy looks into that, and looks to make it funny, rather than annoying and stupid.

  • Nope, this laugh doesn't even come close to the length of the laugh on "The Nanny" when Fran is told to shave Maxwell "for surgery."

  • @CheeseFreaky The scene was edited for time.

  • that's live theater for you. the actors, for the most part, have to wait out the storm and improvise till the audience gives them a good window to continue the scene.

also, to those commenting on it not being funny, it helps if you have watched the episode. part of the comedy is the suspense building; you are aware that lucy and ethel have eggs hidden on them, and you know they're going to be discovered by ricky. but the question is: when and how?

  • This is a good one. But, I believe that the record goes to Taxi, the episode where Jim is taking his driving test.

  • For people who don't think this is the least bit funny, go back and watch your house of payne with their many laugh tracks. Honestly people these days don't belive in live audiences anymore. That's why ILL and Golden Girls will always be the best. They don't use sex or violence for their laughter. But that is besides the point. Lucy makes things funny by being with Viv, Bill and Desi. Those four are the best comedic actors ever. Desi was the best straight man ever not to laugh at this scene.

  • @JazzyFizzful O beg to differ. "The Golden Girls" was full of sexual innuendo.

  • @wintereis57 Well, it is still funny.

  • @JazzyFizzful There is no question about that.

  • @JazzyFizzful I love watching House (which DOESN'T have a laugh track) _as well as_ liking the Golden Girls (which DOES have a laugh track, and which uses sex for humor in almost all of its episodes)... and sorry, but I have very little appreciation for ILL. This is a matter of subjective opinion. Try not to make undue connections.

  • @JazzyFizzful Correction: I assumed you typoed and wrote House OR Payne since you said "THEIR" (plural) many laugh tracks -- thought you meant two shows. I am no fan of House of Payne, for the record.

  • @Pamathey I meant House OF Payne.

  • @JazzyFizzful Way to not read what I said to you in correction of what I'd said.

  • @Pamathey I didn't put "or"

  • @JazzyFizzful Actually, it's not that funny (this video) because half the joke is missing from this clip.

  • @JazzyFizzful The Golden Girls had a lot of racy jokes. Some of the biggest laughs were from Sophia making cracks about Blanche's promiscuity.

  • @howtofaint Like I said before, it was still funny. They didn't have any phony laugh tracks. They had all natural laughs throughout the show. That is what I meant by putting the Golden Girls in there. though it doesn't look like it.

  • @JazzyFizzful --> Golden girls!!? -->no sex humor? i dont think so....

  • @JazzyFizzful Are you kidding? Golden Girls was about a bunch of horny old ladies! They always used sex for jokes.

  • @isolatetheincident Please read my last comment.

  • So refreshing to hear actual audience laughter and not the canned laughter used in some of today's TV sitcoms to try to convince viewers that their filthy, low-class jokes are just hilarious. Thank God we have TV remote controls to quickly turn the channel on some of the garbage that is passed off as entertainment today. As far as Hollywood movies with their so-called stars, who would even walk across the street to see one of these clowns?! Redbox at $1.20/movie is usually too much to pay!

  • Hysterical! I laugh every time I see it as though I'd never seen it before. I read in a book about I Love Lucy that she did not use real eggs until the actual taping of the scene so she would have the surprise of actually feeling the cracked eggs for the first time then. So it wasn't just acting...it was the real thing!!

  • That is so hilarious.... and the talent shows not in the eggs breaking but Lucy drawing that laugh out by her expressions and gestures...that is comedic genius.

  • And after the hit they had scrambled eggs for breakfast

  • HILARIOUS!

  • This first aired 55 years ago, and it's STILL funny.

That is the Genius of I Love Lucy:

Sixty years and hundreds (thousands) of viewings later, it's ALL still funny.

  • OMG....this had me on the floor laughing again! Thank you for posting this! I needed a good laugh today!

  • love it

  • I know i laughed a long time!!!

  • Just think, if one of the actors would have laughed or broke character, they would have had to reshoot the scene all over again and this record would have never been made.

  • oh wow i love i love lucy!!! this is the BEST SHOW EVER!!!!! "I was carrying eggs..." So funny!!! XD

  • The way Lucy moves and look at the guy reminds me of Stan Laurel so much. XD

  • Man when Fred whacks Ethel with the door. Oh my god. So funny!

  • MY FAVORITE ONE: LUCY DOES THE TANGO W/ THE EGGS! NEVER FORGET THE FIRST TIME I SAW IT. I STILL LAUGH. TIMELESS/PRICELESS.

  • ricky's face at 1:43 is priceless!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm STILL laughing !

  • I laughed so hard I almost wet myself.

  • It's funny because they're waiting for the people to stop laughing.

  • i got that

  • One of the very best shows ever.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • I must admit this was one of the best old shows that they created and loved them when I was a kid and still do.

  • love you Ethel!!!!..you so cuban!!!LOL

  • What's funny here? Seriously...

  • @kcartesius Go back to cave or bridge, troll.

  • @kcartesius

If you don't think its funny because you dont understand, watch that episode. Its funny cause Lucy is carring eggs in her shirt, and they smashed when Rick and her were dancing. If you understand why its supposed to be funny, but dont think it is, you have no sense of humor.

I hope that you don't understand why its funny, Because then, you will have a lot of I Love Lucy fans beating you up over your comment.

  • @beatlesfam7 Still not funny after your description.

  • @Pippin76

    Then go die.

  • @beatlesfam7 Ha! That's a bit harsh, don't you think, for not thinking something funny. What a fan of comedy you are!

  • Proud to own every season of i love lucy on DVD.

  • "Ethel! Are you carrying eggs too?" *crack!*

  • Just saw this one tonight :)

  • I have heard the same thing about the Sammy Davis Jr kissing Archie scene on "All in The Family", The Gone With The Wind Scene on "The Carol Burnett Show" the Ed Ames hatchet sketch on The Tonight Show" and the Debbie Downer Sketch on SNL so whitch is it? so much hyperbole on YT!

  • Comparing this to most comedy of today, what made the audience laugh so hard was the anticipation. The audience is on the edge of their seat, because they know the eggs are eventually going to break, they just don't know when. So much of what passes for comedy today is just punchlines with no setup, someone just does something which is supposed to be funny, but without a setup it is no real comedy.

  • @TomasTigre I couldn't say it better!

  • @TomasTigre Great analysis. And after the eggs break, Lucy gets even more laughs by trying to act non-chalant, as only she can.

  • I suppose her implants busted when they collided! LOL

  • Lucy's got a lot of splainin' to do. :-D

  • actually this is NOT the longest recorded laugh in TV history it IS the longest recored laugh in I LOVE LUCY history!!! I just wanted to clear this up.

  • whats that stuff in her shirt???

  • @skelzonefire eggs

  • i like that look on her face like um do we really have 2

  • wow, that was long

  • LMFAOOOO THIS SHIT IS TOO FUNNY MAN!

  • 2:18 - my favorite :)

  • Hahahaha

  • XD, alright then.

  • Hahah I saw this episode , pretty funny but there were SOO many more funny episodes ! Watch it at hallmark channel for those asking

  • Does anyone know if Lucy crossing her arms was scripted? It didn't look like it, because Lucy needed something to fill that gap of time where everyone was laughing. So hilarious! :)

  • @Jennafu832 She's almost certainly adlibbing - milking the laugh, to make it last longer! It's a very neat piece of physical comedy.

  • @Jennafu832 Not scripted, she felt the audience's laugh wane a little and she wanted to milk it all she could. In fact, her look of disgust was real because during rehearsal, she never tried it with raw eggs. She wanted her look of disgust to be real when filming!

  • @tracy1010 I had no idea that this was the first time they used real eggs! That's amazing! It's got to be disgusting to break a dozen eggs in your shirt.

  • This was the longest laugh up until it was outdone by two other programs, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson where Ed Ames throws a tomahawk that lands on the crotch of a silhouette with the handle sticking up like an erection and the other was The Carol Burnette Show where Carol comes out wearing a curtain rod and curtains.

  • @TheTubePortal I timed the three episodes you mentioned, and the laugh that Lucy got lasted 57 seconds. The laughter in Carol Burnett‘s Scarlett O‘Hara sketch went on for 20 seconds. The Tonight Show, where Ed Ames throws the tomahawk, got a 40 second laugh, but then Johnny Carson prolonged it with the ad lib, "I didn‘t even know you were Jewish“. All these clips are available on YouTube.

  • @karlakor Thanks for the friendly reply. The main problem is that the other laughs are edited. This is documented in several books who most often cite the Carol Burnett episode as having the longest laugh. I'm not sure how it's counted if it didn't air, but there are many shows where the audience laughter went on for a very long time. One example is on The Mary Tyler Moore Show episode where Rhoda tells Phyllis her brother is gay. The actors said it went on for over 2 minutes cut was cut.

  • @TheTubePortal Yes, I have heard that these long laughs were edited, and that they went on far longer than what we get to see. I see only one opportunity for editing in the Carol Burnett episode, and that is when the camera switches from a medium shot to a long shot. I have also read where Lucy was quoted as saying that the laughter in the eggs episode went on so long that it had to be cut in half. Of the three episodes discussed here, I guess only the Tonight Show is a true representation.

  • I met Lucy in Hollywood at Metromedia Studios and shook her hand, but that was about it. She was leaving and lots of people didn't get to shake her hand or even talk to her, but seeing her was just as great in person as it's on television.

  • I always notice that Desi has flushed cheeks when they where doing the desilu comedy hour.

  • Ethel: "No, I think i just had Diherea."

  • Sorry, no live audience, all canned, fact.

  • @pete49327 Yeah because you obviously know, because you were there! Thank you for revealing the truth.

  • @pete49327 You're wrong. Sometimes their next speech is delivered after the audience finish laughing. You could tell if it's canned.

  • You see Disney, that's what we call a LIVE studio audience.

  • @SpyroFan001 theres a good chance that a large majority of the audience is no longer "LIVE".

  • @Rowlins who knows

  • Dan Schneider can REALLY learn something from this!

  • OMG! that was funny.

  • this was the only good show that was ever made!!

  • 2:18 -- Here's the difference between being a good comic and a great one. I LOVE the way she tries to stand and act nonchalant as if nothing is wrong as she drips yolks and albumen.

  • yea i have The Complete Series Box Set too love the box that it came in and this show was amazingly funny

  • This shows of Lucy's real talent too. Once the eggs are broken she came up with the ad libs that couldn't have been planned and timed her actions perfectly for the audience's reaction.

  • so happy i have this entire series on dvd <3

  • I Love Lucy!

  • I Am 16 I have Never Watched THis Befor But OMG i Want to Watch It so BAd it Looks Like One of the Best Comedy EVER

  • @YoJoan4 It is the best show ever. Today's reality bullshit shows can NEVER compare to the talents of these classic entertainers.

  • The best comedy show EVER.

  • Great Video!

  • How did he not die of laughter?!

  • I think she was channeling Stan Laurel with her facial expressions!

  • over a full minute of laughter

  • Four great comic actors, knowing exactly how to play off the audience with perfrect timing. Sit-coms could learn a thing or two today by watching this show.

  • Wow, what a way to end my Sunday night! I was afraid I'd wake up the family I was laughing so hard!!

I Love Lucy has no equal. Best show ever!!!!

  • @nancyrdz you are 100% right!

  • Only lucy could have people cracking up for that long. Long live the Queen of comedy!

  • Why did the chicken cross the road?

To Get Lucy Ricardo to HATCH up some of her crazy scheme Ideas.

I dedicate this joke to this video. and to everybody out there.

  • Best Queen Comedy Actress Award goes to: LUCILLE BALL!

i would give her an best queen singing award, but ricky would probably either think im crazy or it's for him.

Who come first the chicken or the egg?

    easy: LUCY RICARDO. XD
