The only ponies that are allowed to be plaited in the showing world are show poines, show hunter ponies and working hunter ponies. Natives are not allowed to be plaited and there are strict trimming guidlines for each breed. We have never plaited our Connemara for dressage or jumping (apart from once at Pony Club camp because of the tack and turnout judging earlier in the day)

I have watched a number of videos that show you how to braid it like this. But I just can't seem to get it right. I know my horse has quite a short mane, but my mum maneged to do it before. Does it just take practise or is it something not to worry about? That horse is beautiful, by the way

Thank your soo much! i really needed to know how to do this because i REFUST to cut my horses mane for shows cuz i love it long and you cant really place in a halter class with a mane thats just out. my trainer said atleast it would show an attemp to controll it. it most likely wont place a first but it will have to do. in under saddle classes for lower scale shows its fine to braid like that luckily! thanks again :)

The way I see it, those who think it's wrong to braid a horse's mane or tail obviously have never had to take care of a horse with a mane even half this long and thick. Unless you keep a horse like this standing one one place his whole life, he'll have major knots, and this is a way of making it easier for the humans, and prevents the horse's mane from being chopped short. Likewise, I do not think that to show up a deformed mane is a work God likes a horse to do. Riding police can keep manes short to make horses less vulnerable, but to braid manes and use horses for competing is but worldly vanity. Also it is vanity to genetically produce such horse-races that have extremely long and unpractical manes.

I also braid the manes of a friesian mare I ride once and a while. Her owner is braiding her manes to. Why? Because they are long and they get in the way when she is eating, whether it is in the pasture or in her stall. we do it because it is convenient. ( her manes are almost double as long as the horse's manes shown in this video).

@mikilavush okay. how about in the 100 degree heat of the summer, when your horse is sweating bullets? you put their hair up in braids to cool them off. they dont mind it. if it was really uncomfortable they wouldnt let us do it. and comparing hair that is tied up, to a t-shirt around your neck, is totally wrong. no one is wrapping the mane around the horse's neck and making them feel uncomfortable. and i'm sure that a horse would prefer this to constant tugging and tangling while being ridden.

To braid ones hair, however, is another thing, and in my opinion, the same principle is to be applied concerning manes. To me it is just wonderful to see a long mane fluttering in the wind, and I can sense that fluttering feels good for horses themselves. You can see on this video how distastefully twisted and unnatural a released mane can look like because of frequent plaiting, so the only reason for plaiting is the vanity of competition.
