My sense is that Matelo was not such a big guy, and yet I think he's playing a Favino, which is an even longer scale than a selmer jazz model...also a bigger body. He tears into that guitar and imposes his will: INCREDIBLE!
Historic, Merveillieux! This clip shows us the joy the musicians bring to this music. There is a great article by San Francisco newspaperman Herb Caen who went to see Django as a G.I. in Paris in the 1940's and saw M. Ferret instead.
We are in the presence of greatness here; Jean "Matelot/Matelo" Ferret (1918-1989) was one of the greats of Manouche guitar playing and I love his music, but sadly I started going to France a few years too late to have seen him play live. He often played "pompe" (rythmn guitar) to Django Reinhardt's lead in the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, as well as making the iconic "Manouche Partie" album with the great accordionist Jo Privat and his own wonderful double album "Tziganskaïa".
Très bien.

They're incredible, but I regret that the quality of the recording has a terrible impact on the audio.

Finding this clip is for me akin to discovering one of a seventy-year old Django playing - Formidable!
(Oh, and the hilarity at the beginning is because "la minch" is actually slang for vagina - hence the reference to "the secret little flower".)
