@junkyman2 Just goes to show that everyone makes mistakes, no matter who you are. The thing that makes professionals different from everyone else is they don't let it ruin a performance. Oystien Baadsvik told me in a master class that "wrong notes are going to happen. Maybe like one hundred. So get them all out now."
Say what you like about 'top of his game' and all...but remember this is a live performance, and not a pieced together recording from a soundstage. Live music...With all of its MINOR faults and hangups...is a BEAUTIFUL thing. We must cherish it more...lest we come ANY closer to losing what few opportunities we have for it. God Bless!
I do understand having bad days, I've had my share. But having less, and making those bad days sound good is what sets the top players apart from guys like me. I know Smedvig is a great player, but he's getting up in years, and if he can't handle the tour schedule and play at the top of his game, maybe they shouldn't take as demanding tours. It's about knowing your limits. Sometimes our egos get in the way. Just my 2 cents
Uhm... I was under the impression that Carnival of Venice was supposed to sound easier on cornet?????????? I guess I can understand being tired though.. that amazing graze arrangement had a really killer 1st trumpet part..... ;)
I've only heard Rolf live once, after listening to recordings for 30 years. I told my friend at the concert that he hadn't heard the real Rolf, as he had that airy tone displayed here. I thought it was just a result of a long tour as well. He can draw on many skills to get through a concert, though. Used to have a tape of their St Paul Sunday Morning appearance with the original members. Great listening if you can find it. Good stories, too. Did you know he studied under Mendez?!
The Tuba player is my favorite in this recording, but usually Mr. Smedvig is. Carnival of Venice isn't actually very hard - it just sounds hard, but the key is easy and what seems fancy just takes practice (tonguing with the fingers). I'd like him to show how good he really is by playing the Concerto for Trumpet, by Oskar Bohme (search for it on YouTube, and don't listen to the one with the high school kid, listen to the other one with Eric Aubier playing).
Rolf Smedvig had a hard time in this performance, you can tell. It's not nearly as good as his normal playing - his lips were either already tired, or it was very cold where they were. The guy is a lot better than this
their 'leader' is Rolf Smedvig, and he's an amazing player. He had a rough time here it seems, but you try playing Carnival an average 8 times a week for 48 weeks, in a new city every other day. Not so easy.
cant rolf tongue? i know he's an accomplished player but he blew threw some touble tonguing sections with slurs. although this is the clarke version right? perhaps theres less tonguing
Rolf Smedvig is so amazing! I met him when he was a young high school trumpeter (and I was a pianist) at Tanglewood, and I remember him as being not only a exceptional technician, but also a fine ensemble player. Congratulations to him and the EB on a fine video!
the tuba player looks like eddie murphy!

I adore the empire brass! I think one of the things I love best is how miraculously in tune they play! Does anyone know what kind of tuba that is?

@JLYRIC2006 The reason he sounds so good here, is because Rolf sounds so bad...and that's the first and only time I'll ever say/type those words. :'(

@dcfr3ak Also he just sounds amazing. He just visited FSU and played with our trumpet ensemble (Marc Reese) and his sound is outstanding!

he does look like hes having a rough time...
they should probably not kill themselves sheduling a tour like that... and not varying thier set list is also an unwise decision...
Marc's clarity of playing and technicality impresses me more still

just smedvig unbelivible..others not for the empire brass quality.and u see french horn not for the girls hahahhahahhaha(number one Rusk)
