  • I suggest sticking with snow leopard. Lion drains performance and is more focussed on multitouch trackpads etc. For instance expose from dock doesn't work anymore and the OS uses much more RAM. I suggest when you upgrade, buy an SSD and at least 4 GB of RAM, 8 GB or more recommend if you want to use VMware/parallels.

  • Do you have the magic trackpad for the gestures? I am really surprised, yet happy, that the multitasking swipe gestures were so smooth on an older iMac!! =D

  • Wow, I just noticed that you do not have a magic trackpad from the beginning of the video. Then, how do you do have the multitasking screen switching gesture? =O

  • @TeddyScan95 I agree! I currently use the Magic Mouse (not at the time of this video), and the animations that accompany the gestures run surprisingly well.

  • @ve3trogamesmedia 2.0 core 2 duo's were mid september 2006.. It could be a RAM issue, you have to at least have 2 GB RAM to run lion 10.7... I believe it uses 667MHz DDR2 if I'm not mistaken. Throw you 2 1GB sucks & you should be ready to roll... Are you running 10.6 Snow Leopard? I would suggest not stacking your OS's if possible... Download 10.7 Lion to flash drive & clean install...

  • Did you install this from the App Store or a disc? For some reason I cant upgrade my parents iMac with Lion since its "too old". They have a mid 2006 20" 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo.

  • @Ve3troGamesMedia I did use the App Store, however I suggest you check the processor again. I believe the mid 2006 iMacs used Core Duo processors that are not supported by Lion (it requires Core 2 Duo or higher).

  • I have a 20 inch iMac, also late 2006, 2.16 Ghz CPU, 250 GB HDD but only 1GB of memory. Stick with SL or go for Lion? On my other iMac i7 2.8 Ghz 21,5 inch with 8 GB it's a different story :D

  • @superchargedturbo You’ll need to upgrade your RAM to at least 2GB before installing Lion. Snow Leopard is great, but if you really want to use the new features of Lion on that Mac then an upgrade is certainly worth it.

  • @JNArthur13 Thanks for your response. I've installed Snow Leopard and it works beautifully. Maybe when the hard drive fails I'll upgrade the machine and I'll add some extra memory to run Lion.

  • You should do a tutorial on how to do this! (Unless you already have)

  • @samzabeast666 On what?

  • WTF, this is seriously Lion! damn, didn't knew an 5/6 year old mac could do that.

  • Definitely getting either one of these or a 2007 Mac Mini as a tie over between my Quicksilver G4 and something more modern at some stage this year. They're already on eBay for under £300 and the dimensions are almost identical to the 19" LCD I use as a second screen next to the 23" 1080p LCD I use as my main monitor.

  • @sonic3243, I know right! I don't get why they always think they need a new one! 1600 is enough for at least 5 years haha. I have this computer too, going from 10.4.1 to 10.6 made a huge difference for me though, just the normal enternet and regular use was twice as good. I might upgrade though.. Just because editing in final cut is becoming a nightmare with it..

  • im going to get one of these nice to no you can be up there with the big boys thanks for the video :)

  • What is wrong with the 2006 Intel Macs? They're fast enough. Apple wants users to buy new Macs every few years, unfortunately.

Then again, Tiger is my favorite version of OS X. Fast and stable :D

  • hey men i also have a late mac its an macbook pro 2007 15" so you think i can put lion too?

  • @optimusbot1 Definitely.

  • @thatgameboy2600 I wouldn't expect so, but the extent of the performance decrease would depend on whether the processor is Core Duo or Core 2 Duo, the amount of RAM you have and, for some tasks, your graphics.

  • i have the same computer except it only has 1.8 Ghz and 3GB of ram, do you think the results would be very similar?

  • @shubimbi77 do you mean 1.83 Ghz? The 1.8GHz iMac is a PowerPc g5 and can only go to Leopard. It can't run lion.

  • @mattnanokid well yes its 1.83 ghz but it has an intel processor not powerpc. I'm currently running snow leopard on it

  • my early 2009 macbook still runs good and fast but i dont have the app store.i dont want to mess up my macbook also i dont want to buy snow and lion wtf i just want lion ,who know next month snow lion might come out

  • 2006 windows vista machine can run windows 8 preview fine too

Were coming to a point were hardware is holding up for over 5 years

  • Even though it's "supported", a 2006 computer isn't meant to run a 2011 operating system

  • Works normally cool :D

  • Is your HDD loud in your iMac? I swapped the stock drive for a noisy seagate STA series drive, but my stock drive was terrible.

  • Lion runs great doesn't it? I have the same iMac, and I don't think I will upgrade for about a year. Nice Video.

  • @electrotech555 I quite agree.

  • thats not lion its snow leopard

  • @c4pt1n54n0 Just HOW did you come to that conclusion?

  • @dbeaver317 oops sorry i didn't se the mission control part, i thought it was snow leopard cu its stil using the old safari

  • AWESOME

  • Is this Retail Release on your comp or is it a preview? And if its the Retail... Where do I find the instructions to Update

  • @DigitalBath I am using the retail release of Lion. Basically you need Snow Leopard installed on your Mac and then simply download it through the Mac App Store. Instructions on how to upgrade can be found on the Apple website.

  • I am running lion on this iMac and it runs as good as any of the new macs. I just put a 1TB 7200 32mb cache drive in it to spice up the performance a bit. It does run amazingly well though. I use this as my main setup.

  • Cool, Thanks.

  • Great Video, My cousin is about to buy the same iMac, and do an upgrade to 10.7 so my question to you is, do lion run fast on your Mac or kind of slow ?

  • @BIGBPRODUCTIONS100 Hello! It depends on what you are doing. For most everyday tasks such as using Mail, Safari, word processing and iTunes, Lion runs perfectly well. It is a little slow when using applications such as iMovie and iPhoto ’11, but if you have some patience these are acceptable. Also, some animations (such as in Mission Control or Launchpad) are not always completely smooth.
