I got turned on to this guys music back in the seventies by a yank I was sharing a house with in Queensland. The last 3 years have been spent tracking down the 300 odd albums he owned & we used to listen to. Recently managed to find & get most if Gary's repertoire (God bless the torrents). Great to see people have uploaded footage. An enormous talent sadly missed. I'm pushing 57 now & this is still as great as the first time I heard it. If this guys music don't touch yer you can't be human!
Everybody likes to contribute that jerking around to the drugs, but even before that he said he just got so much adrenaline up there that he couldn't help it. The man was brilliant.
Gary could be disturbing to watch even on TV as I never got to see him live ..but he gave you 100% despite all the demons after him ...he was in better shape here than most videos you see him ....but all the jerking ....wild time off phrasing ...was part of the whole mystique ....my favorite all time country singer ..in his prime no one could touch him ...and Nashville knew it ......even Conway said it ..and he wasnt too bad himself !!!!
