Despite ending the Attitude Era that way it finally showed the fans that Austin was never meant to be cheered with that character, he was meant to be negatively received like the other heels.

In fact, I was kinda game for it, because he needed to change his act. This is why Cena has a strong "Anti-Cena" current going with him, it's because he hasn't changed his act in AGES. This would have happened with Austin eventually, but changes like this prevent it so :)

The early part of this heel turn was some of Austin's best work. Later on when they made him a guitar-playing sissy sucked. Austin's big face push that put him on the map was in part a function of a generation thirsting for more edgy entertainment (see also: D-Generation X).
