Education is easily as important than merely being able to ingest food. In rich countries, the people who desire direct charity are on average less educated. If foreigners simply keep giving food to poor countries, the poor countries have only learned to beg for more food as needed. You can break the cycle by having intelligent locals who understand how to take care of themselves and their friends. Also, many third world countries already have warm climates.

Besides, if you WERE to buy a normal corporate leftovers laptop at that price, I'm willing to bet the child's toy would be faster.
One GB is admittedly small, but a normal .txt file is never that massive. Thousands of those accrued over several years is still only in the low megabytes. And even if you do manage to fill that, flash drives DOUBLE THE SPACE at least.
Bill Gates and the OLPC creator would never come to an agreement. Bill Gates I'm sure woulda loved to be in on this project, but he would never create anything open source... open source is ideal for this situation because the OLPC is kept out of the hands of corporate america, and gives developers and learning childeren more flexibility and understanding of how the machine works.

LINUX sucks! UBUNTU 7.4, doesn't work my WiFi card, my HDTV card, and my Bluetooth dongle. They've got a ways to go, to get enough drivers, to really kick Microsoft's ass.
Yes you could but you wouldn't want to. While it is an x86 based machine it doesn't have a proper HD drive thus it uses Flash which would cause trouble with XP and it's dependance on swap files. Windows 95/98 would work fine though and would be really decent performers though so there is still a route to Windows and I'm sure it will be figured out quickly once commercially available.

i have one (EEE) and i know a thing or two about computers it's faster more rugged,smaller...ect
it is better in many ways.
BUT it costs more so it is not so practical for this application (olpc)
i like the new design and colors of the new olpc model its much better aesthetically and looks well built (important for young kids)

Education is easily as important than merely being able to ingest food. In rich countries, the people who desire direct charity are on average less educated. If foreigners simply keep giving food to poor countries, the poor countries have only learned to beg for more food as needed. You can break the cycle by having intelligent locals who understand how to take care of themselves and their friends. Also, many third world countries already have warm climates.

Ruggedized laptops are often far more expensive, laptops that run on proprietary operating systems are far more expensive, and paying $2000 per laptop is cost-prohibitive for most of the prospective customers of the product. $100 isn't.
Besides, if you WERE to buy a normal corporate leftovers laptop at that price, I'm willing to bet the child's toy would be faster.

One GB is admittedly small, but a normal .txt file is never that massive. Thousands of those accrued over several years is still only in the low megabytes. And even if you do manage to fill that, flash drives DOUBLE THE SPACE at least.

Bill Gates and the OLPC creator would never come to an agreement. Bill Gates I'm sure woulda loved to be in on this project, but he would never create anything open source... open source is ideal for this situation because the OLPC is kept out of the hands of corporate america, and gives developers and learning childeren more flexibility and understanding of how the machine works.

Yes you could but you wouldn't want to. While it is an x86 based machine it doesn't have a proper HD drive thus it uses Flash which would cause trouble with XP and it's dependance on swap files. Windows 95/98 would work fine though and would be really decent performers though so there is still a route to Windows and I'm sure it will be figured out quickly once commercially available.

Having 3 meals a day, better more stable government and a stable economy could help the people achieve education and ways of learning to live than a 100 dollar gadget. If I was given one of these I would sell it for food and clothing and get myself a job. Knowledge is only powerful if anyone will support you for it.
