I love this song it sums up the 60's so well! another song I love is Moonstone! I don't know why... It is just so spellbinding. All his songs are ahead of his time. But we knew that didn't we?

same here! i was like no way did cat stevens do a cover of a bedknobs and broomsticks song! i was right, he didnt . But this is still a great song.

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful, for all those cats who grew up i the sixties in Swinging London, this song conjures up the atmosphere and the mood of a wonderful time! Portobello Road, wandering up and down all day looking at the market stalls and just hanging out. I cannot believe how time has gone so quickly, I would love to be able to go back just for one day. The 60's were such a fantastic time, I can smell the Patchouli oil even now. Peace and love to all.

Cat betrayed the world when he performed at HAMAS fund-raisers (disguised as Islamic Charities - money traced to Al Qaida) ,
Cat openly and ON-FILM agreed with Iran's "fatwa" by to kill an author of a book, (Salman Rushdie), and Yusuf has donated tens of thousands of his own cash to HAMAS charities ( the money traced to weapons ). This is even more betraying , because Cat previously wrote "Peace Train" ! (B4 he converted ) - Allah akbar.

Stevens later commented, "I had a girlfriend, and she was working for this big firm, and I didn't like the way that she had to spend so much of her time working. The riff seemed to fit the words, Matthew and Son. There was a bit of social comment there about people being slaves to other people."

I've never heard this either - you're right. It really captures Portobello market (I imagine even more so in the 60s/70s)
