On this date in 1957 {Jan. 26th} "Too Much" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart, eventually it would peaked at No. 1 {for 3 weeks} and spent a total of 17 weeks in the Top 100. Since this was Elvis in the 1950s even the flip side received a lot of radio air time, "Playing For Keeps" reached No. 21!!! {Info from Joel Whitburne's 'Billboard's No. 1s' book}

Moreover, the nonsense of current artists having more "Ones" or more time at no 1 is also something Whitburn dismisses, the scoring of charts changed drastically in 1991, whereby it became much much easier for "singles' to chart as no.1.  In fact, there are NO singles anymore, so saying these singles scored better than Elvis is comparing gold to crap.

"Too Much" was a #1 chart topper. Much confusion is associated with the early Billboard charts, there were actually multiple charts, the best reference for interpreting this mess is chart historian Joel Whitburn. In short, the Elvis classic WAS a number one. This is based on Billboard Top Sellers Chart where it spent 3 weeks at No. 1 and Billboard Most Played In Jukeboxes Chart where it also hit No. 1. Confusing as it is, Whitburn is THE chart guru, publishing dozens of books on the topic.

Studied Scotty's weird solo a million times as a kid in the fifties on my old Hofner President and could never figure it out - or what he intended before he 'went off on one'. Clearly it was not just an Ab, Db, Eb riff. Did he ever say how it should have gone?

Scotty Moore did the solo here. He got totally lost in the scale and screwed it up royally (A flat is a weird key on guitar). He told Elvis he could never play it live like that. But for some reason, Elvis wanted to keep it.
