What i dont understand is why some of u ppl here are complaining abt the 2004 version of Jabba! I know everyone's entitled to his/her own opinions, but it seems that some of u who disliked the 2004 version took it waaaay too personally! I find your lack of faith and appreciation MOST DISTURBING -___-"
The scene is unnecessary, primarily because all of the information in it is in the Greedo scene, too. The 1997 version is atrocious, just really awful CGI that looks like a reject from a cutscene of KOTOR. The 2004 version looks better, but it's still too fake-looking, and the Jabba doesn't even look like the one from Jedi or Episode I.
would someone explain to me what is going on here? I didn't grow up with the original films, so can someone explain why in one of the cuts that Jabba is human?
@nicholasczapiewski That was a cut scene from the original movie. They intended to insert a stop-motion creature in over the man, but had to nix it due to budget and time constraints, so they put all the exposition from it into the Greedo scene. Lucas decided to reinsert it into the Special Edition.
This is one of the only alterations I think was somewhat justified, after all; having a man play Jabba in A New Hope to then replaced by a puppet Jabba in Return Of The Jedi is quite a huge continuity problem.
However, it would've been a million times better if they got Rob Bottin or Stan Winston in to create a animatronic/puppet Jabba for 1997 special edition instead, that would beat any of these CGI alterations face down.
@TEHORIGINALSTEVO There was never a guy playing Jabba in the movie. The scene just didn't exist in the original. Supposedly they intended on putting in a stopmotion Jabba then ran out of time/money so cut the scene entirely.
the 1997 jabba was budget, at least they tried to improve him in 2004. It is still shit but at least we get to see a lost han solo scene. will jabba jump out at us in the 3D version? is boba fett empire or jedi version?
If they could superimpose those additional actors (like Boba Fett), why couldn't they superimpose a stop-motion Jabba puppet or something (similar to what they originally intended). It's still a nice scene to have, but in my opinion, it still doesn't look very natural (but the 2004 version is an improvement). Plus, Han stepping on Jabba's tail just didn't fit.
I'm actually okay with this, seeing as how it's a missing part of the story. it's not a pointless "OOOH, CGI ALIEN!!! BUGGABUGGABUGGABOO!!!" scene, it adds to the story.
all they need to do is clean up the CGI, which should be no problem at all. ILM has come a LONG way since 2003 (or was it '04?), so Jabba should undoubtedly look much better.
This scene is a rape of Jabba's character. He acts almost like he's scared of Han, he kinda gets pushed around by him and Han even steps on his tail.
STEPS ON HIS TAIL!? Jabba is the equivalent to a Mafia Don. Do you know what would happen if you stepped on the Don's shoes? He'd have his men take you out back and break your god damn legs
...correct me if i am wrong but Lucass only directed Ep.4. The Empire Strikes Back was directed by Irvin Kershner. The screenplay, based on a story by George Lucas, was written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan. Return of the Jedi was directed by Richard Marquand and written by George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan. Funny how Lucass gets all the credit for the Original Trilogy yet he was only one of the five top people, not including all the other many talented people that contributed...
...i like the part where Jabba is a Cat(reference to a caption i did. if you didnt see it shame on you! :P what are you waiting for GO SEE IT!)...@1:25 the part where Boba turns and looks at the camera is so stupid! OMG Lucass you have failed me for the last time!...
Did Jabba break his arse inbetween films or something? He's perfectly happy walking about here but for all his time in jedi he lays about like the behemoth fucker that he is lol
@neraliza Oh, OK. When I was growing up my dad had VHS tapes of the original he'd recorded from when the movies coming on TV (minus commercials, so perhaps it was HBO or something), so I'd seen the movies already when I went to see the rerelease in theaters in 1997. In 2004 he bought them on DVD, but he bought them as a trilogy, so I guess that means the original original trilogy isn't on there. Thanks for informing me.
@tuberinmyhead But the original version in 1977 didn't play this scene at all. It wasn't until the 1997 theatrical rerelease that they added the scene in with a CGI Jabba and the voice of Jabba that we all know from Return of the Jedi.
@HarryBillyBobGeorge Do you have an old VHS tape of the original original trilogy? Because I didn't think that they still sold tat version, I just thought they sold the current version.
@Mrbillsfan11 you can get on ebay possibly still, the original original trilogy on dvds with the remastered version, i think it was the 2004 release. i prefer the original so i watch that, which is on the special features disc for each film. but i think you could only by each film separately so new hope 2 disc, empire 2 disc, return 2 disc. i thinks its worth it.
well this scene was unnecessary anyway. but the cgi looks ridiculous, and do you mean to tell me that han stepps on jabba's tail? really? is this the same jabba that throws people in a pit? you don't fucking step on his tail, certainly not through pathetic visual manipulation. i'm not even going to go into the greedo business... lucas is insane, and now he is making us suffer with him by making all these changes. take your cgi and shove it up your ass.
I take it that in the very original version, Jabba's tail wasn't stepped on.
Also, unless Jabba was still supposed to be an alien, then the "Jabba, you're a wonderful human being" line is little less...how to say it...mocking, maybe.
Such a useless throwaway scene that should have never been reinstated into the film and forever stayed on the cutting room floor. On top of it all, the CGI looks horrible in both versions: Jabba looks 1000x better and more realistic using a puppet in ROTJ. The re-done CGI Jabba for the DVD release actually blends in worse with the footage than the CGI S.E. Jabba.
I like the Janna scene. He looks so much smaller than he looks in ROTJ. i used to chalk it up to the fact that Janna gained weight and maybe his species grows as it gets older. Along comes Phantom Menace and blows that theory out of the water with a larger Jabba. Why didn't they just make him larger when he was standing by The Falcon?
@TheJediKenneth Wait, I thought the hutt in Phantom menace wasn't Jabba. There's something that looks like a baby hutt (well, a small hutt at least) somewhere in the race scene, I always thought that was Jabba and the big hutt was like his predecessor/father/something
How is it, even in '97 and '04, that Jabba looks like complete shit as far as CG creatures go?! And from ILM as well?!! Really?!! I think the '97 is pretty bad looking now but the '04 looks almost worse... Almost looks like a generic build an amateur student put together for a class final.
@Tenucha I don't get why you're saying tha the 2004 version look bad, to me it looks amazing! And it's not super realistic because of the fact that it was just a small addition to an already made movie, not like an upcoming blockbuster
What a fucking awful decision putting Jabba in the original film. This is as offensive as Greedo shooting first. Part of what made Han Solo's story arc so awesome was that you always HEARD about his issues with Jabba. It builds up for two films, and when you finally get to see Jabba is a gigantic slug! its a cool revelation! granted you get to see Jabba in the prequels briefly but a whole new generation might want to start with the original films. This fucking spoils it.
@smalllions I agree 100%, but lets be honest, Lucas is not a good director, and movie maker, have u seen the changes he's done with the Blu ray? terrible, why do you think Empire Striks back was so good? Lucas didin't direct it.
I like the 1997 version the most :D just because Jabba is so brilliant-looking! In 2004 he looks too much digitalized for me and his colour is strange.
You know any legitimate gangster would have a guy whacked for the kind of disrespect Han shows at 0:47. Seriously, Jabba lets Han walk on his tail, in front of all his underlings who are supposed to respect and fear him, and he just lets it slide? I know it's just a movie, but that's stupid.
God, and they had to have Boba Fett throw a glance at the camera, just to get more Boba-time for the Boba-fans! "Hey, it's me, Boba!"
Like others I doubt that GL ever meant for this to be anything but the original human actor.
If they'd "planned" back in 1977 to add an effect, it doesn't seem logical they would've shot the scene that way, esp. with Han walking behind him. It was hard enough to make the CGI look good, imagine inserting a stop-motion or whatever in '77!
Hate Star Wars?? No way man, I don't. I love it. Just I hate all Lucas changes that he has made to get more and more money and to link with his new shit-rilogy.
As a ten year-old in 1980, Empire was amazing for a number of reasons. But one of them was this sense of doom that hung over Han Solo as a wanted man. You didn't know who this Jabba was, but from the fear he inspired, you imagined someone ruthless, regal, and worthy of respect. When Empire ended, you felt dire fear for Han being in his grip.
New viewers of the OT will never feel any of that mystery--introduced in the first film to a buffoon who lets people step on his tail with impunity.
@SirWilly77 Except that you clearly saw that Jabba was just a pathetic little fudge ball of a man in the original release, but hey who expects some dumb 10 year old to remember a major detail like what species a character originally was?
The original human version was kinda dumb, nothing special about him, I'm glad it was left out. The 1997 version looked like a giant slithering turd, really shitty. The newest version though, I can deal with. It tells a bit more about Solo's relationship with Jabba without looking too silly or hasty.
Yeah man!! can you bealive it?? Lucas decided to change Boba's voice for Jango's voice. Remember... Boba is a clone so it must have the same voice. ):S
@HuttClanForever: It's because Boba Fett technically IS Jango. He is a clone, after all.
Boba is one of the most strange, mysterious and charismatic character. To think that he is an ordinary clone is disappointed. Because it makes Boba no so epic, just a simple clone, just Jango after all. I prefer not to believe in this and still unknowing the Boba origins... ^^
This scene is not really necessary. Lucas put it back because in 1997 wanted to get some extra money. Bah... fuck him off and his new versions, the best is from 1977. No Hayden Christensen, no computer effects and no new voice for Boba Fett.
@sebitas I like this scene. It's here to stay now. However, it's clear they hadn't decided Jabba would be a alien at this point, regardless of what Lucas claims. The Jabba model doesn't fit in that scene physically. They need to work on it again for the blu-ray.
The 'wonderful human being' line is obviously a bit weird too. I just put it down to insincerity / sarcasm though lol.
I don't know how to feel about the different versions. On the one hand, the '97 Jabba looks way more like Jabba from Jedi, but I had forgotten how bad the CG was. The 2004 Jabba is animated better, but he looks wrong, both in color and shape.
@Dragblacker Originally Lucas filmed him as human, with the intent to use post production effects to make him more of a monster(which he actually wanted to be furry and a little more wookie-like). Due to budget and time constraints, he decided to just leave the scene out of the movie. When they re-released the film in 1997 (after RotJ), they put him in using CGI. They replaced that with better CGI again with its re-re-release. :D
@WinsorIII It's a myth that Lucas always intended to replace the actor with a monster in post. He considered it in 1981 for the re-release of Star Wars, but that was it.
@amcint01 jabba was originally intended to be furry, so that's why declan mulholland was dressed in a shaggy coat, but then george lucas decided to make jabba more like a slug
I dont know, hope they fix the cgi before the blue ray release, It just dont look any good at all. Either make every Jabba apperance CG or just make him look more like a puppet in episode 1 and 4.
I like that they added him in like this but I wish they could make him look less like a video game character. Maybe they will make a new version with todays graphics.
Am I the only one who thinks the 2004 version is actually less realistic than the 1997 one? it's too clear compared to the rest of the scene.

Hate Star Wars?? No way man, I don't. I love it. Just I hate all Lucas changes that he has made to get more and more money and to link with his new shit-rilogy.

This is goona make me sound dumbbb as crap. So was Jabba a human in the episode IV?!! IM so confused.
dylantiger2 7 months ago
As a ten year-old in 1980, Empire was amazing for a number of reasons. But one of them was this sense of doom that hung over Han Solo as a wanted man. You didn't know who this Jabba was, but from the fear he inspired, you imagined someone ruthless, regal, and worthy of respect. When Empire ended, you felt dire fear for Han being in his grip.
New viewers of the OT will never feel any of that mystery--introduced in the first film to a buffoon who lets people step on his tail with impunity.
SirWilly77 7 months ago 26
@SirWilly77 Also: wtf is Boba Fett doing there? He's not some soldier for Jabba! He's a bounty hunter, who works alone!

@SirWilly77 Judging by the way Jabba acted in all 3 versions, I probably wouldn't have felt it in the first place. lol
Axxidous 4 months ago
@SirWilly77 Except that you clearly saw that Jabba was just a pathetic little fudge ball of a man in the original release, but hey who expects some dumb 10 year old to remember a major detail like what species a character originally was?
tuberinmyhead 3 months ago
@SirWilly77 This is why I'm showing my kids the original original trilogy, then the prequels, THEN the 2004 (Or 2012, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, etc.)

jabba was human? wtf???
ooOMikevOoo 8 months ago
I thought that Jabba looked worse on the 2004 DVD that he did in the 1997 Special Edition Version.
George Lucas should have just left it alone.

"fuck him off and his new versions, the best is from 1977. No Hayden Christensen, no computer effects and no new voice for Boba Fett" Thank you
TrialsHDFan1 8 months ago
The original human version was kinda dumb, nothing special about him, I'm glad it was left out. The 1997 version looked like a giant slithering turd, really shitty. The newest version though, I can deal with. It tells a bit more about Solo's relationship with Jabba without looking too silly or hasty.
boettcherownzu 8 months ago
Very well done video..could you also make a video about the han solo - greedo who shot first thing? they were three versions of that too

I hope the bluray version will look really good.

Yeah man!! can you bealive it?? Lucas decided to change Boba's voice for Jango's voice. Remember... Boba is a clone so it must have the same voice. ):S
Oh man...
sebitas 9 months ago
@sebitas It's because Boba Fett technically IS Jango. He is a clone, after all.

sebitas 8 months ago
@HuttClanForever I guess we're the only ones who understand that... besides Lucas.
DarthRushy 6 months ago
The 2004 version's cgi still looks awful. I guess their best guys were all working on the new films.
elheadkickio 9 months ago
I don't like this scene, for my, Jabba is better when he can move. Like a big f!"#ng fat bug.
EINLANZERVFR 10 months ago
This scene is not really necessary. Lucas put it back because in 1997 wanted to get some extra money. Bah... fuck him off and his new versions, the best is from 1977. No Hayden Christensen, no computer effects and no new voice for Boba Fett.
sebitas 10 months ago 5
@sebitas They gave Fett a new voice!? WTF
elheadkickio 9 months ago
@sebitas I like this scene. It's here to stay now. However, it's clear they hadn't decided Jabba would be a alien at this point, regardless of what Lucas claims. The Jabba model doesn't fit in that scene physically. They need to work on it again for the blu-ray.
The 'wonderful human being' line is obviously a bit weird too. I just put it down to insincerity / sarcasm though lol.
arabiansanchez 8 months ago
@sebitas Why do you hate star wars? why don´t you want it to look like the real thing?
julianzolo 6 months ago
I don't know how to feel about the different versions. On the one hand, the '97 Jabba looks way more like Jabba from Jedi, but I had forgotten how bad the CG was. The 2004 Jabba is animated better, but he looks wrong, both in color and shape.

TheRitchardgaleHater 10 months ago
Wait a minute... in the original version, Jabba was human? Was that what was seen in theaters? Then what was Jabba the Hutt in Jedi?
Dragblacker 11 months ago
@Dragblacker Originally Lucas filmed him as human, with the intent to use post production effects to make him more of a monster(which he actually wanted to be furry and a little more wookie-like). Due to budget and time constraints, he decided to just leave the scene out of the movie. When they re-released the film in 1997 (after RotJ), they put him in using CGI. They replaced that with better CGI again with its re-re-release. :D
WinsorIII 10 months ago 16
@WinsorIII actually he originally intended to use STOP MOTION ANIMATION! how cool would that have been?
MrSamster911 6 months ago
@WinsorIII It's a myth that Lucas always intended to replace the actor with a monster in post. He considered it in 1981 for the re-release of Star Wars, but that was it.

amcint01 11 months ago
@amcint01 jabba was originally intended to be furry, so that's why declan mulholland was dressed in a shaggy coat, but then george lucas decided to make jabba more like a slug

I dont know, hope they fix the cgi before the blue ray release, It just dont look any good at all. Either make every Jabba apperance CG or just make him look more like a puppet in episode 1 and 4.
