Thanks for this vid! I used to own one of these, given to me by my godmum. Truly the finest 'boombox' (the thing weighs a ton) ever made! 5 Band EQ, quality bass reflex speakers, the cassette deck alone was simply amazing with TONS of features. And that's all just for starters! That handle pops off and those speakers can be removed and set apart from the system! You think I'm done?? You can even seperate that discrete amplifier/tuner from the freeking cassette deck! I could go on but I'm out of-
The pc5 which was featured in the harlem globetrotters ad, is the japanese favorite, much compact, and has clean lines to it. It would be an equivalent of $700 boomox today.
i just bought one the other day for $4 at a flea market. little bit dusty and it's a little on the scratchy side for sound but it's slowly coming around.
I had an RC-M70 and then an RC-M90 as a teen - and it's really hard for me to pick a favorite as they both had pros and cons, but were both like my children!!
@GadgetsGuy i just picked up another one for $5 at a second hand store. really beatup looking and barely worked. three hours later with the thing totally gutted and taken apart, then blew the living sh*t out of it with the air compressor, major rubbing alcohol wipedown and was able to get it to come back to life as well. everything except the lit lcd screen. the backlight wouldn't work and i just left it at that. i still think my jvc labyrinth mini system for $20 was incredible.
I have one and will NEVER get rid of it.The cassette deck has features I've never seen on any other deck.Still sounds great after all these years.Even has a timer on it that you can record a radio show if you won't be home!! Just like a TIVO!!!! Sick!!!
Superb piece of kit. I love it. Want one. The closest thing JVC currently make is the RV-NB50 'BoomBlaster'. I'm using one of these at the moment. It may be modern, but playing the right tunes it certainly makes me feel nostalgic. Can't beat the style of these 80's boomboxes though.
Thanks a lot for posting this !! I bought one (PC-5) when I was 15 or so. Dad said it was too much to spend on one, but got it anyway. Now it would sure come in useful. Went fishing on a crabber and forgot it in storage aboard, and a man named Sarge apparently has, it but can't contact him yet. The PC5 musta ben an older model. yers is newer no? Better keep it, they don't sell 'em anymore!!

Those really did have great sound. Panasonic had a model similar, I forget which, that also had incredible sound quality for its size along with all the best of features. I miss those days when manufacturers made their own stuff and they really competed with one another by pushing quality to new limits. Thanks for posting!
I love tape decks, recorders, and of course tapes. Reminds me of my high school years. I got so many compact cassettes of different styles, types, designs, colors,...that I use today on a daily basis. This was the best format ever invented that lasts for generations.
What size and how many batteries does tht thing use? Does it have line in? If the unit has line it you could connect a CD player to the machine, instead of having to buy one of the new whimpy portable stereos with a CD player in it, this is far batter than the little bits of plastic you see these days. Does it have internal microphones?
I owned this, it's predecessor the PC-5, and one of the good ghettoboxes that predated these, with speakers built-in, the RC-M70. All of them sounded great and were well-made. My PC-55 still works.
I used to own one exactly like this. They also made a black version ( pc-550 ) Man I miss it .. really the best portable I had. Hook a CD reader on it and you are up to date.... I loved that machine and thank you for bringing me back memories.
Nice, although it would be interesting to hear how it sounds, instead of hearing background music.

My dad's old cassete player used to have those three lines marching toward the direction arrow, just like this boombox does. : )

Tape deck controls look like something lifted from R2D2's forehead :)
I loved all the servo "touch-matic" electronic controls in high end 80's stereo systems.
Very nice equipment from a time when things were meant to last and be repaired instead of thrown away.

DAMN!!! Why can't they make'em like this now. Imagine the same amp and speaker with a mp3 player and hard drive.
murfreebear 4 years ago 2
MP3 player and hard drive is more desirable for me than FM radio! Or, we could put internet access for access to playlist[dot]com.
