  • I just got my MC and was given two dvds to watch that were produced from eaton on how to use the RR Gearbox and yes the clutch has to be used although at 21 yrs of age im not using the clutch but yes the dvds from eaten say you must use the clutch to maximise gearbox life! anyway top vid!

  • I cant ever remember ever seeing a User Manual that said you only have to use the clutch in this Truck to go from Lo to Hi range etc. I have never had a driving instructor ever say to me, "Dont use the clutch unless its to go between the Hi and Low Boxes"....

    I still miss them from the time, I figure they are in there somewhere!. its usually when you have someone with you or someone's watching lol! Usually it happens when I go from the RR 18 speed to the Mack 18 speed. The bloke driving this (hello Davey!!) is just a shit driver!!!........ I'm sure i'll get a phone call after that comment, God help us if he ever becomes a driving instructor..........lol!

  • I know the truck, I know the driver and I know how much weight (GVM 116-120T)we have never seen you in our lives at 85. The clutch is for taking off and stoping with a mack 18 or road ranger.

  • autoshifts are the same as the manual box and they dont use clutch to shift, so there you go, that shows that if you know what your doing its not going to damage your box

  • when you say auto shift what do you exactly mean?? an automatic transmission???

  • an eaton auto shift, its the exact same box as the normal road ranger, but there is a computer connected instead of a gear stick and the computer does the shifts. its connected to the engine ECM and controls the revs so that it can get the changes right without grinding gears. the driver has to use the clutch to start and stop, thats all.

  • well im not familiar with the BMW lol. but i think the eaton ultra shift is the same idea as the auto shift but the ultra doesnt have a clutch pedal so it might be like that. like the volvo I shift

  • clutchless shifting can't be as bad on the tranny as any other way of shifting...trust me i'm a mecanic and i experienced it myself grinding gears even with double clutching...it's all a matter of syncronizing engine rev, actual speed and what gear you want to drop it in...a guy who really knows his truck could drive clutchless all his life and not break anything

  • hey mate when i started driving i was in a b double mack , i had to double clutch him and he had the twin sticks, then i was in an r model mack for about 5 years and never used to clutch on it , never grinded and gears as long as you have the revs up it will be fine , just dont slam the gears in let em slide in , now im in a t904 kenworth , i wouldnt even dare to change gears clutchless because its got a synchro , lol the good ole days...

  • yeah i guess the more modern trannies are picky if you don't use the clutch...especially spicers but eatons are not really fussy but then again like you said if you're banging in the gears and whatnot it's garranted you're gonna screw everything up

  • @MackvsKenworth 904 guessing eaton 18 speed manual?? should be able to change without clutch.. the only synchro should be high low range synchronizer clutch.

  • Forget all the excuses you blokes.. that guy is as rough as guts on the entire driveline, and the sooner he gets an auto, the better. A good driver needs to know alot more than just smooth gear changes.... he needs to know how to put on a good load that is well secured, keep it straight on skinny roads, manage his fatigue, and most of all look after the gear and behave like a professional... all of which are as important as each other.

  • Clutchless changing over time will eventually cause more wear and tear to the gearbox than using the clutch... That's why they installed a clutch in the first place

  • Clutchless gear changing... Its all in the timing, listening to the revs,load of the engine and knowing the road speed ( and what slot to put the gear stick in) Not feeling the love guys! What have I started? Army will go auto soon, no doubt you will see more broken army trucks on the back of tow trucks on a highway near you......

  • Some of them are rebuilt ones, end of the day its up to the movers how they want them shifted from A to B. The old Macks and unimogs are hell on a long trip!

  • first off we dont dubble clutch becouse were lazy,most of us dont use it at all unless we have to. and yes there are some that THINK they know it all, and also i drive becouse i love being out on tha open road,except for dealing with dumbasses like your self who think that drivers are so bad. were just doing our job and providing for our kids..like you do i would assume.....

  • The yanks rely heavily on autos (ie. Deuce, Humvee etc.)... Besides they're fleet is aging and trucks are basically WWII/Vietnam design...

  • No offense, but the clutch is there to shift out of neutral into first or reverse. You dont need to grind any gears to shift at all. In my experience, those that insist on double clutching every shift are amateurs anyways. They wreck the transmission or wreck the truck. Priorities in the wrong place.

  • yup, and you cant really go far without the clutch without the gearbox fucking up... coz you have to get the revs in 25-30 hundred to shift up without the clutch and even then your fucked over

  • The Fleet liners are a good truck. Would have been better to use something with a bit more grunt pulling the a triple with ASLAV's.

    As for the comment, a lot of gearboxes are designed to be double clutched when changing up / down full gears. Splits are different

    Why is it that a lot of the truckies you see "double clutch" when changing full gears?? It is because the gearboxes are designed to be changed that way. Match road speed with RPM and the gears will change smoothly.

  • why double clutch on heavy loads, cuz it won't go into gear as easily or b/c you'll destroy a gear if you mis-shift under all that weight?

  • This happens sometimes, i idouble clutch most of the time with heave loads but the mack im in desnt got a synchro so , double clutching in the r model is not realy needed. lol

  • 18 speed Mack box or T2180b, with the back to front splitter, sorry no syncro. The shift he messed up on was the low to high range and split change. which is always fun when the range syncro plays up. At least he wasn't Jake changing like some of the Cowbays i've seen!
