I think the stripped down demo version from the seventies is better... The rawness of that version just heightens the despair. A song this simple and beautiful doesn't need orchestral accompaniment. Elvis cleans up nice, by the way, but I could do without the parted hair-do. That's a hair-don't.
Georgeous but remember in 1978 on Stiff Records Elvis did it solo on piano and it was the best I ever remember this gem to be. So if your new loves ever turns you down
my hands are shaking and my knees are weak i cant seem to stand on my own two feet .who do you think that whould have such luck ... I'M IN LOVE ... i'm all shook up
A great great song. I saw Elvis sing this is person too and it was a magical moment .. better than this if that is possible. Just Elvis at the piano and me crying in the audience.
My God!!!! I respect a lot The White Stripes, but the cover they did is awful compared with this performance by Master Elvis Costello!!!! This is one of the greatest Burt Bacharach's songs!!!!! RESPECT!!!!
1978: Elvis did this song with the Attractions for "stiffs live"
elvis must love this song, to think that twenty years prior to this,1978, he was preforming it with the stiffs, and then,1998, he got to play it with the living legend himself.
I do like the song but not by Costello.-

@selysse I'm pretty sure Bacharach & David wrote it with some orchestration in mind... and I'm not seeing any part in EC's hair.

Issac Hayes is by far the best version.

This is the best version by far. The White Stripes is my second favorite but it doesn't even compare.

My favorite Burt song and Elvis at one time did it great (Stiff Live) but less great on this site. Wish sound was louder.

had the pleasure of seeing this tour when they played in london. had to travel over from dublin. worth every second and expense

I think this is one of Bachrach's best songs. No matter who does it--Dionne, Dusty, Tommy Hunt, Elvis--all versions are nice. Well-written song.
Although I do think Dusty's version is the "version of note".

Great song. I saw Elvis do this in person and it was better than this. Also was on Stiff label with Iggy Pop, etc.

@damonlevine pretty sure the Stripes blew it open.
