It is crystal clear that McCain misheard the woman mainly because she pronounced Zapatero's full name with a strong spanish accent, so! McCain was not sure who the heck she was talking about. Then later he could not understand her accent, listen to the way she asks and the way he asks "me what?" her accent was very strong and wasnt too fluent, especially when she asked the question for a second time.
hahahaha, very funny! well, i think mccain needs some geography lessons before he becomes the president of the united states... just for world's safety xDDD
Sorry, tragic as it is, this is not a "non-issue". It's a shame to see McCain's faculties deteriorate into what looks like the onset of senile dementia. Wow, I dont feel so bad now. If a fucking presidential canidate dont no how to listen then shit, I am just a nurse! So what if I hear someone say he has a pulse in the operating room. I hear want I want to hear, and respond the way I want. SHOCK EM!
One tiny thing in his defense: He CLEARLY thought she said "you," not "Europe."
But aside from that, it's clear that he didn't care much about this interview or interviewer, and that's because he's not such a capable contender for president.
"You" / "Europe" moment aside, please, my fellow Americans, whether you get it or not, we NEED a President who respects the other countries of the world. I know we Americans haven't had to understand that for a while, but it's TRUE, especially now.

Because he clearly understood "Okay, what about you?" - Why not just admitting that? It's crazy to rather insult a Nato ally than admitting you misunderstood a spanish accent on an oversea's telephone call.
Yeah, but she follows "Europe" with "I'm talking about the President of Spain." Which means he's not just mishearing, he's not listening. But yeah, his advisers could just say he had trouble hearing and understanding the accent and it would be much better for him politically.

The only interesting part of this is the last 10 seconds. I don't like McCain but clearly he wasn't understanding the interviewer. No big deal. It'd be nice if he knew every foreign leader by name but it's not an international incident. The lame part is the spokesman's response. It's so damn Repub. to address an issue-not by clarifying it-but by being emphatically wrong. They never admit Palin doesn't have experience, just say (incorrectly) that Obama has less. Stupid tactic that, sadly, works

Second day, they Say it was ETA (by now they knew it was Al Qaeda) and again the third day. Then al Qaeda releases a video saying they did it. NOW they can lie any more. What was the motive you might ask? Because the election was coming up and the party did not want to lose 4 going to war with Iraq. So then Zapatero gets all the votes, goodbye Aznar. Same month Zapatero gives order to pull troops out.
P.S. I just took a history class on 20th century Spain in Spain taught by a Spanish professor.
Neo-conservatives in Washington are idiots; Reasons why Spain pulled out of Iraq go back to before the terrorist attacks. Around 80% of the Spanish voted against going to war. Aznar (prime minister at the time) didnt listen to the people and went any way. (he was convinced by US) Consequently, Terrorists Bomb Madrid train station. Spanish Government didnt know who did it the first day. Suspected ETA (Basque separatist group).
if you notice since McCain picked Palin as his running mate the big media has spun it so the American people now think that it is a very close race because all the women of America will abandon the democratic party and vote republican because Palin is a woman. This paves the way for the rigging of the vote, when the American people wake up the day after the election, McCain will be the President. And the people will feel as if it was a fair vote because of the big media spin.
You said it best. All the votes for the last eight years were stolen, and the same will be for this year. Go and vote, but the electronic voting machine, controlled by the Rep., will change it to their favor. Do some search on electronic voting machine
Just another example of a doddering old fool! Why didn't he ask for a clarification if he did not hear her? I am tired of excuses. He is too old and too out of touch to lead America in the right direction. We need youth, intelligence and integrity - not a liar and adulterer! We need OBAMA and BIDEN to bring integrity back to the White House!
I agree that he seemed to be having difficulty, probabaly with her accent. She said the Prime minister's name really fast, but she said Spain before and then reiterated Spain afterward when it became clear to her he was confused. Maybe he just had a bad connection. Why couldn't they just admit that? Imagine if he was actually President and this happened, it could start a diplomatic incident.
"What about me?" It's clear he had troubles understanding the woman's accent, as I might have were I to listen to her words over the phone. Why cover that up? I don't understand this guy anymore. Straight talk my ass.
How ironic that I have to be tested for competency to work in real estate, you have to pass a test for a driver's license. Yet for a job that can literally end the world if done right there is no quantitative test to see if a candidate is even mentally able? That's insane. McCain if you look at him is a doddering old man. One whose mental acuity is at best questionable and at the very most is going senile. Regan in his last days was a mental giant compared to this joker.
Maybe he needs subtitles on a teleprompter to understand a mild Spanish accent. Bush has an IQ of 83. This interview shows that McCain is more dumb about SPAIN vs Mexico than Bush. In an interview re Wall street fiasco Mc repeats adnauseum that "I believe in American workers - they are the backbone of America", etc, etc. He gets off on a tangent and the interviewer cannot get him back to the original question. It seems that McCain's boozing for years ruined his brain. Release McCains med files!
I see you're point, but I think you're blowing it out of proportion a little. McCain didn't say anything too extreme. Frankly, the public and the media have come to expect the cover-up. Being honest about your mistakes and shortcomings is a surefire path to defeat. Look how they crucified McCain for admitting that he's not an economic expert (which, lets face it, none of these guys are.)
The fact that speculation is often what drives economy, I would stretch to say noone can really pinpoint exactly how a economic plan will work. BUT considering this guy wants to continue tax cuts on Big corps and borrowing money from "competitors" I would say Obama has a better grasp of reality than McCain does.
I think it was her pronouncing "Europe" and her accent that threw him.
And that would be fine if he owns up to it like the "straight shooter" he pretends to be. He's not owning up to it and contradicting himself in the process.
I have been watching McCain for a while and have to say that I am getting concerned that he may have some sort of serious problem and hate to say it but I think he may be in the early stages of dementia. He repeats himself, he can not give his stump speach without reading (even tho he has given it many times). They were 1 hour late for a rally and then he cut his speech short. This is not the first time at all in his run. It would be sad if this were the case but gives me even more pause.
yea what is it? I can't see it. They keep saying it over and over, but that doesn't make it a fact. I suppose they have to say stuff like that to get elected
We all make mistakes and mishear things. It's embarrassing, but no big deal.
To stand by the mistake and declare hostile to the US and refuse to meet with the leader of a member of NATO, a country whose troops are serving alongside ours in Afghanistan? That's just insane. It's a position which should immediately disqualify a candidate from the Presidency of the United States.
McCain should apologize to our ally, and fire the advisor.
It just seems like the interviewer was not being clear. I'm not pro McCain, but this is just too unfair to him. I've got enough reasons to NOT vote for him. Things like this are just a waste of time for me.
the guy got it right when he said that the problem is that he would rather risk an international incident covering his ass than to admit he made a mistake. i know they want to make him look good, but he looks much worse now that he got caught. well, hopefully for him not many people see/care about this.
she says spain, i heard her, she says what about europe, she pronounces the president (prime minister? the interviewer calls him president) of spain's name correctly, how much clearer could she be? he wasn't paying much attention to what she said. apparently, neither were you. it behooves a head of state to be a careful listener and to be familiar with our allies in the world. if he's not, who wants him? he can certain count on the vote of ignorant bigots

This wont get posted but I am gonna say it anyway. If Obama get in office, we as a country are doomed. Obama do not wat to take sides? this from a man that wants to be our president? hell no! america, wake up before its too late. We dont want no outsider in our whitehouse.
speak for yourself, sarah. i'm an american but not part of your "we". except maybe for the native americans, everyone in this country is an outsider or the child or descendant of immigrants who fled persecution, seeking opportunity and freedom here, or slaves who were forced to come here from outside of america. george washington himself was an outsider.
if it weren't so scarey that he might be our next president, I'd laugh at this. ooooo geeeeeez our country needs help.. PLEASE OH PLEASE VOTE OBAMA-BIDEN
McDoof is just following Palin's lead. She didn't know what the Bush Doctrine was, but was afraid to admit it. She tried to BS her way out of it, and made herself look like a fool.
McBush sounds tired and confused, but his BS comes through loud and clear.
My sense is that McCain couldn't understand what the reporter was asking--she has a think accent and speaks quickly. And since her previous questions all regarded Latin America, McCain basically chose to regurgitate Republican boilerplate on Latin America. I mean if you look at what he said, he says nothing of consequence. Pretty much Political-ese. I'm not sure he should be crucified for that.
The "young" anchorwoman from "The View" wants to see an African-Americanin in the highest office of the country, brings back good, intimate memories of 30plus years ago, of what coul've been, "the way we were" kind of stuff.. Talk about ethics, and objectivity of MSM...He was married, by the way.
Why don't they ask Obama all these questions, with a machine gun accent (btw Zapatero is the Prime Minister of Spain, which is a parliamentary monarchy, ignorant reporter)? They are doing to McCain the same as they did to Hillary! Remember the SNL skit, "are you confortable, a pillow maybe???" lol
The "liberal" media is going 24/7 against McCain, they are fighting for their life, distorting and taking everything out of context!!! That's genuine fascist tactics!!!
Well, at about this vid and thousands of others? What about "The View"? What about CNN, NYTimes, MSNBC, Ronald Martin, Donna Brazile? I hate Fox but their counter parts really get under my skin for their hiprocrisy and "impartiality".

Hillary complaining about always getting to answer first the trickiest questions, Geraldine Ferraro being thrown out of public spotlight, the partisan "probe" of "troopergate" (nice term coined by t Democratic lawmakers in Alaska who are behind the subpoenas - which are meritless and illegal, just low blows). Dozedns of examples, it's makin me sick, anyt=body or anything that dare stay in front of the "ONE" gets a beating.
How is the Troopergate probe "partisan"; I believe the inquiry is headed either by 2 Republicans and 3 Democrats--or the other way around. That's clearly not a partisan makeup. Also, one of the Republicans on the inquiry essentially said, Doesn't the truth matter anymore?--as in, yes, this might hurt Palin's chances of becoming VP, but does that mean we suspend truth and honesty until the campaign is over?
The 'troopergate" investigation was unanimously approved by a bi-partisan committee long before McCain chose her for VP. He did such a piss-poor job of checking her background he didn't know she was already under investigation. If he does that half-assed a job of picking a running mate, what kind of incompetent fool of a president would he be?
and lets not forget she originally said that she'd WELCOME the investigation as she'd done nothing wrong. It not the fault of the fictitious "Liberal Media" that shes amassed a good bit of dirty laundry back in Alaska. Its McCain's fault for spending a week vetting someone before holding her up as our Presidential understudy.
I'm not a fan of Mr. McCain's politics, but this may be a touch out of context. When she initially referred to Mr. Zapatero, she said "would you be willing to meet with President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero?". Which is A. incorrect, as Spain has a Constitutional Monarchy and Mr. Zapatero is the Prime Minister, and B. she said this extremely fast using a Spanish Language pronunciation. I think McCain "winged it" as best he could, and when she clarified he felt had to "stick to his Guns".
And they she said President, it would have been a story with teeth had she actually been talking about Guatemala and he talked about Spain. He probably just heard "President" - not Spain. Spanish sounding name - Western Hemisphere... I might have made the same mistake, so not really commenting at first is not as good as clarifying but considering had he done that people would be ranting about how he is "hard of hearing"... I cannot believe I'm defending a Republican, what has the world come to.
Which shows a major problem with McCain's personality. He felt "he had to stick to his guns." In a context of a misunderstanding instead of making correction to help people understand his new realization about the question, he "sticks to his guns" creating a possible international incident.
I don't think that makes his statement any better.
Are you serious? There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for clarification. First of all, I highly doubt the media would respond negatively, there is way too much serious stuff going on, and also its not as uncommon as you think to ask for clarification, it happens all the time. What you will get ridicule for is being a dumbass and not knowing the president of Spain when you know what reporters you will be talking to,and then follow up was WAY worse, too arrogant to admit a simple mistake
You might be right about the "hard of hearing" catch-22, and the issue certainly is overblown.
However the comment still speaks of some level of confusion, belligerence with his mistake, to me - when he kept saying things like "latin america" and "this hemisphere".
By itself it's nothing, but since he bills himself as a foriegn policy expert, when combined with other mis-speaks like the non-existant "Czechoslovakia" it just makes one wonder just how conversant he is with foreign issues.
no not really. The McCain camp blew this up all by themselves. No one is going to fault McCain (especially at his age) for having misheard someone who was speaking quickly. The McCain camp chose to frame his innocent mistake as his definitive position. its just WACKO . This is an actual ally in Afghanistan where we are desperately in of able bodies, the commanders have been begging for MONTHS AND MONTHS for more help and McCain chooses to piss on Spain's leg rather than admit to a mistake ?
This reminds me of being quizzed by a teacher and not knowing the answer and just trying to bullshit my way through. Same for Palin and the Bush Doctrine. Trouble is, this isn't high school.
It also comes from McCain only half listening to the interviewer. She didn't try to sneak something past him. She said the president of Spain.
I guess their has to be a leftist site for McCain gaffs, but just google the many stupid gaffs of Obama and Biden. These two nits are 100 times more addle pated.
Remember, just one more vote on the Supreme Court and bye-bye 1st and 2nd Amendments.
trpsoxc mate you say "but I dont think this is a big deal, the guy is old and senile what do you expect"
errr a damm sight more understanding about world affairs for a start! this old man should not be elected! he has little or no understanding about most things!
it's a realy big deal when you stop to think about it!
Does McCain think Zapatero is connected to the Zapatistas? Does he not talk to the maids often enough to understand Latinas? And why do his answers sound like he got them from Sarah Palin?
The Cuban-American community in Fla is well informed about politics and international affairs, and McCain's comments may hurt him a little among older Cuban-Americans leaning Republican. He sounds ignorant, and he also sounds dishonest by instead of asking the reporter to repeat or re-state the question he just starts mumbling his non-sense about another part of the world that has little to do with Spain right now.
If I had to choose between a fuzzy dem like Byrd and a sharp Republican like the Bush Sr of 20 years ago, I'd have to vote for Bush Sr. It's too important of a job to give to a stupid and lazy ne'erdowell as we've seen only too painfully over the last 8 years.
Think about it. We need someone we can count on in a crisis. Imagine a "24" type scenario. Who has the alertness, clarity and command of the facts and complex ramifications to make decisions of that magnitude - Obama or McCain/Palin?
What latin voters? Spain is in Europe, Spain is a member of the EU, Spain has nothing to do with Latin America. It's like Australia and Canada, same language, different regions.
Well, he did knockout the power to about a third of Spain, and in doing so almost started a international conflict. So maybe he does have a beef with Spain.
If you take off the blinders and listen objectively to this and many if not most other McCain clips, it's inescapable that he is a very fuzzy, confused guy who depends almost entirely on others for his information and policies and often forgets what they've told him.
Remember, this guy finished at the very bottom of his class even before the POW experience and the onset of senility. He is clearly very similar to George W. Bush in both lack of intelligence and lack of curiosity.
Remember, McCain is campaigning on his (supposed) foreign policy experience.
Spain is a NATO member. It was the victim of the worst al Qaeda terrorist attack in Europe.
Zapatero was voted into office lierally hours after the Madrid train station bombing ... mostly due to his countrymen's rejection of Spain's part in Bush's War. It was Zapatero who promptly withdrew Spain's troops from Iraq.
But, rather than back off his remarks and reveal, once again, just how confused and unfocused John McCain is in general...
...INCREDIBLY his campaign has taken it upon itself to shape a future McCain foreign policy position by using this "senior moment" to signal to the rest of the EU that President John McCain (goddammit!) will PICK & CHOOSE who the United States counts as a FRIEND or NOT!
If many are decived by this than ask yourself ,what else have I been decived about?Hmmmmm???????

Second day, they Say it was ETA (by now they knew it was Al Qaeda) and again the third day. Then al Qaeda releases a video saying they did it. NOW they can lie any more. What was the motive you might ask? Because the election was coming up and the party did not want to lose 4 going to war with Iraq. So then Zapatero gets all the votes, goodbye Aznar. Same month Zapatero gives order to pull troops out.
P.S. I just took a history class on 20th century Spain in Spain taught by a Spanish professor.
deviouscola 3 years ago 2

I see you're point, but I think you're blowing it out of proportion a little. McCain didn't say anything too extreme. Frankly, the public and the media have come to expect the cover-up. Being honest about your mistakes and shortcomings is a surefire path to defeat. Look how they crucified McCain for admitting that he's not an economic expert (which, lets face it, none of these guys are.)
badperson3 3 years ago
The fact that speculation is often what drives economy, I would stretch to say noone can really pinpoint exactly how a economic plan will work. BUT considering this guy wants to continue tax cuts on Big corps and borrowing money from "competitors" I would say Obama has a better grasp of reality than McCain does.

Dozedns of examples, it's makin me sick, anyt=body or anything that dare stay in front of the "ONE" gets a beating.
akbarbaby 3 years ago
How is the Troopergate probe "partisan"; I believe the inquiry is headed either by 2 Republicans and 3 Democrats--or the other way around. That's clearly not a partisan makeup. Also, one of the Republicans on the inquiry essentially said, Doesn't the truth matter anymore?--as in, yes, this might hurt Palin's chances of becoming VP, but does that mean we suspend truth and honesty until the campaign is over?
bakedbeansface 3 years ago
The 'troopergate" investigation was unanimously approved by a bi-partisan committee long before McCain chose her for VP. He did such a piss-poor job of checking her background he didn't know she was already under investigation. If he does that half-assed a job of picking a running mate, what kind of incompetent fool of a president would he be?

repubsuck:
BINGO!
and lets not forget she originally said that she'd WELCOME the investigation as she'd done nothing wrong. It not the fault of the fictitious "Liberal Media" that shes amassed a good bit of dirty laundry back in Alaska. Its McCain's fault for spending a week vetting someone before holding her up as our Presidential understudy.
as McCain said,
"the more you get to know her"...
widgetbrain 3 years ago
I'm not a fan of Mr. McCain's politics, but this may be a touch out of context. When she initially referred to Mr. Zapatero, she said "would you be willing to meet with President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero?". Which is A. incorrect, as Spain has a Constitutional Monarchy and Mr. Zapatero is the Prime Minister, and B. she said this extremely fast using a Spanish Language pronunciation. I think McCain "winged it" as best he could, and when she clarified he felt had to "stick to his Guns".
Reghao 3 years ago
But right before that she says "let's switch to Spain" and she specifically mentions Spain and Europe again in the interview.
umbradweller 3 years ago 2
And they she said President, it would have been a story with teeth had she actually been talking about Guatemala and he talked about Spain. He probably just heard "President" - not Spain. Spanish sounding name - Western Hemisphere... I might have made the same mistake, so not really commenting at first is not as good as clarifying but considering had he done that people would be ranting about how he is "hard of hearing"... I cannot believe I'm defending a Republican, what has the world come to.
Reghao 3 years ago
Which shows a major problem with McCain's personality. He felt "he had to stick to his guns." In a context of a misunderstanding instead of making correction to help people understand his new realization about the question, he "sticks to his guns" creating a possible international incident.
I don't think that makes his statement any better.
revjmike 3 years ago 3
Nor do I. But I'm curious as to how the media would have responded had he said "Sorry could you repeat that?".
Reghao 3 years ago
Are you serious? There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for clarification. First of all, I highly doubt the media would respond negatively, there is way too much serious stuff going on, and also its not as uncommon as you think to ask for clarification, it happens all the time. What you will get ridicule for is being a dumbass and not knowing the president of Spain when you know what reporters you will be talking to,and then follow up was WAY worse, too arrogant to admit a simple mistake
pidbull 3 years ago
You might be right about the "hard of hearing" catch-22, and the issue certainly is overblown.
However the comment still speaks of some level of confusion, belligerence with his mistake, to me - when he kept saying things like "latin america" and "this hemisphere".
By itself it's nothing, but since he bills himself as a foriegn policy expert, when combined with other mis-speaks like the non-existant "Czechoslovakia" it just makes one wonder just how conversant he is with foreign issues.
umbradweller 3 years ago 3
no not really. The McCain camp blew this up all by themselves. No one is going to fault McCain (especially at his age) for having misheard someone who was speaking quickly. The McCain camp chose to frame his innocent mistake as his definitive position. its just WACKO . This is an actual ally in Afghanistan where we are desperately in of able bodies, the commanders have been begging for MONTHS AND MONTHS for more help and McCain chooses to piss on Spain's leg rather than admit to a mistake ?
widgetbrain 3 years ago 4

Not so trivial.
