Yes the control lines which go to the back of the parachute let you turn one way or the other and "flare" the parachute to slow down for landing.

The parachute did not "collapse" the skydiver just screwed up the landing by doing what we call a "hook turn" when he became aware that he might land on the roof. It is a common cause of serious injury accidents or fatalities in the sport and due to serious error on the part of the canopy pilot. Any human being can make a mistake and it is truly tragic that this one had such bad consequences. Any parachute instructor (like me) can see what happened and why. RIP dude and sympathy to your friends.

I don't know anything about sky diving. But his parachute was in place until it was so close to the roof. So I couldn't figure out on why he would die. Maybe he was not wearing head gear and hit his head.

But this is a good training video for students, not the BEST cause you don't get details but if you read the story we know what goes on and people, like myself, learn what NOT to do and WHY not to do it.

I wish more fatal and deadly skydive videos were here on youtube, they are the BEST learning tool out there.

Nope, he tried a low turn and totally neglected altitude awareness, thus his demise. Especially after I unstow my toggles, collapse my slider, loosen my chest strap, and start horsing around, I am always mindful of the earth coming up! Note the landing pattern of others but in the above case, if the base or final was not consistent or safe with others or whatever, land as safe as you can even if it is not with the group. I'll take ribbing any day over an ambulance or hearse ride! BSBD.
