OMG!! i have been looking for this song for years. I bought this Joan Baez album when it came out in 1992, ans sadly lost it. This was my favourite song from that great album.
I've always loved what this song was about. Although, I'm a little upset that she removed the lyrics that said, "we kiss your ass, we make you hold, we doctor the receipt". Otherwise great song. Cheers for posting. ~ J.
I know this response it late, but... Joan did leave the original lyrics in her recording. Probably had to record another version that was "acceptable" for video. It was, after all, 1992! :P
This video is so tired and UNBAEZ, but the recording is a masterpiece. The B&W close-ups of JB are fun but the spinning band shots are irritating beyond words.
Yes, that's correct. From what Baez said in an interview, MCC wrote it around 1992 or so, but had just put an album out ("Come On Come On"), so she wesn't going to record it for a while. Joan was in the process of recording her "Play Me Backwards" album, so MCC gave the song to her. MCC later made it the title song on her "Stones in the Road" album in 1994.
I've wanted to see this for several years. I knew there was a video out there of "Stones in the Road," but had never seen it until now. Thanks for posting it! She does this song well.
Great song with a great message, lost today, sorry to say.

Joan seeing Joan with an electric guitar.

I bought both CD´s, but I just think Joan has more experience of the concept. Mary sings it beautifully; just younger.

Did Mary Chapin Carpenter write this song? Both versions are brilliant!

Yes, Mary Chapin Carpenter gave her this song. Awesome. I think Mary wanted to help spread the message.

@taddyd1 Great song, performed as only Joan Baez can. I heard her sing it with Mary Chapin Carpenter at the now-defunct Bottom Line in NYC.

Does anyone have The Dream Song? I'm pretty sure it's also on this album. I remember hearing it as a kid, but can't find it anywhere.

The Dream Song is on Joan's CD: "PLay Me Backwards."

If my memory doesn't fool me.
Mary wrote the song but released her own album years later from Joan Baez's.
