River pike are amazing. I had a 15.5Lb pike from my local lake and it took less than a minute to land it. This is because the lake's full of roach and bream and as a result the pike are just fat and lazy. I've caught 5lb and 6lb jack pike on rivers which have scrapped 10 times harder.

Its not actually the gills , but rather the jaw bone located underneath, its perfectly safe for the pike ;)

Try holding one by the gills and your hand will get ripped to shreds because of the rows and rows of sharp teeth like things located on the gills

The only criticism I have, is that the fish could have been landed in a net, rather than pulled in by the gills, as this could damage fish.

I know the problems of landing big Pike in net, with lure hooks and Pike getting tangled in net, but it is probably preferable to grabbing fish by gills

I have never forgiven myself for that

I took them back to show off to my family

they ended up in deep-freeze then buried in local woods behind us

Well Connoro 420, i would try livebait 9 of 10 pike i catch on livebait a pretty big pearch or roach.not huge more like the palm of your hand including the fingers:)And gear is standard pike gear, and for me that is minimum 80gr rod weight.i use 110gr.happy hunting:)
