  • Thanks for your comment, Replacing the headlamps with LED is actually a less costly way to save the same amount of energy a roof mounted PV array can produce.

that is to say until PV panels get more efficent for the footprint required.

  • update!

New software allows us to install a large battery pack, then drive up to 74 MPH without using Gasoline. then engage the gas engine or not depending how far down the accelerator is pressed.

keep an eye on the AutoBeYours website for details.

  • If there is a prius factory built that's Fully electric+no gas show me. I'm a Leaf fan.

  • That was incredible, I'm a big Prius fan

  • Hello Dahorn, this experiment allowed us and others to move forward with other forms of prius hacking , including adding a 10kw/h lithium pack.

see plug-in supply or plug-in conversions online.

there are now hundreds of second generation prius cars converted to plug-in's

  • this is a good idea, ZERO emission prius, but the car was not designed that way so surely it must need more frequent charging than a purpose built electric car

  • Awesome!

  • Here in Europe Diesel is over rated and expensive and too complicated and now not very reliable because of all the crap technology to clean exhaust ! Our tax system is based on C02 emissions which forced lower C02 cars (mainly Diesels) to drive in cities and towns while emitting dangerous exhaust emissions, and that is not acceptable. Particle filters are not so good at filtering the worst of the exhaust and can have major expensive problems! Diesels should be banned!

  • Diesels in Europe 70-80 mpg (U.K) average? I don't think so! Diesels are good but not that good and I have been driving them for years! Even the polo Bluemotion can't and certainly can't in towns. Diesels may be good on the motorway but in town that mpg goes way down! And the polo bluemotion may be one of the most efficient cars you can buy, but I would never drive one, tiny, ugly inside, very slow. Prius faster, no diesel rattle, and bigger. My average is 62 in town 53 on motorway!!!

  • Easy, the Prius has an electrically operated scroll compressor,

it bolts to the block in the traditional location.

of course the condenser would also need to be installed.

  • What about Air Conditioning?

  • Hello Dave. The plugin conversion movement is very large. it has been our experience that 5kw/ hour is about the smallest battery pack that will give any decent range. also top speed without a gas (I.C.E) engine will be 52. two companies offer hardware/software modifications to force the prius to spin the ICE giving extremely high gas mileage when driving faster than 52 mph.

those are plugin conversions and plugin supply. a different bms system is required!, dtcs must be cleared or spoofed.

  • Hi. I live in the UK and diesel/gas prices are hitting an all-time high of around $9 per gallon (in your money) and, as an electronics engineer, I'm seriously considering buying one of these and running it with numerous stock Ni-Mh packs as you have done already. Have you established the range of the vehicle in this video yet? Also, is it necessary to clear the ECU DTCs before the car will drive? and finally, can I leave the charge-management system alone or will it need extensive mods? Thanks!

  • lov wat u guys r doin, makin a difference

  • want to donate a prius to me?

  • It has been my experience that buying a prius saves lots of money. Especially if you are replacing a guzzler.

  • very much so. especially when one is on disability income and cannot afford massive gas prices when having to drive 200 miles one way to a dr appt every other month

  • @imwoody36 You're better off with a diesel. Look at cars sold here in the UK. VERY efficient returning up to 70 or 80mpg average from a diesel turbo family sized car. I can buy two for the price of a Prius in the UK, so it doesn't sell here very well. My ctdi returns 55mpg in the town, 70mpg on a motorway and hits 60mph in 10s. It does 120mph. Low tax, low insurance too. Why get a prius!

  • @urbex2007 Hello, thanks for posting.

First , My experience is with Electronics, not diesels. I believe PHEV's will become more widespread. I recently participated in the Progressive Automotive X-Prize in Michigan A diesel powered car did very well in the 90 mile challenge, but our car did well in the city challenge. I hope the diesel powered car will make it after paying a 15 % MPGe penalty for fuel type, and also I hope it passes the emmisions test this week.

  • @urbex2007 Prius can be converted to all electric or PHEV whilst diesels cannot. When it comes to the crunch with oil one day, because of war or an aggressive oil market, the prius can be modified fairly easily. The prius the best of all worlds.

My prius is only a few months till the warranty runs out and I already have a spare amount of cash to do a PHEV conversion as 98% of my journeys are within the electric only range for the PHEV setup I want.

  • my interest in this would be to make a prius a pure ev.

  • How fast could this go with a 240v lithium pack?

  • without the newly developed Hybrid Energy Module from Ewert energy systems, 52 MPH is still the top speed. larger capacity only gives us longer range, The HEM module allows electric speeds up to 69 or 70 MPH but is only sold through plugin- conversions corp. thier price as of dec 2009 is 13500 dollars for a phev kit.

    it is very very nice.

  • The prius requires about 250kw/h to move a mile on flat ground.

10 miles would be 2500 kw/h before any losses are considered. we have determined ( by experimentation) that a 7500 kw/h battery pack is adequate for about 10 miles. in my humble opinion, the solar panels would best be placed on the parking structure. thanks for posting!

    keep it up!

  • Where did you get the facts? 250kw is over 335 hp, you need to rethink your comments. 10hp is more enough to move a prius up to 50mph that's 7,460 watts of power.

  • I stand corrected, It should read 250 w/h or 2500 w/h for 10 miles. please remove the "K" from my hastily typed message. Additionally please note that my friends at Ewert Energy systems have created an electronic module to manage the ICE in a prius to force very very low gasoline consumption even at highway speeds...this requires an extra battery pack.

  • Maybe if you want it to be all electric add the solar panels mod to the roof to help it recharge.

  • We lost 176 lbs by removing the tank, heads, manifoilds, crank, etc. not to mention the weight of gasoline, coolers, and fans. Spoofing the state of charge helps keep the hybrid ecu from limiting range. I believe you will need about 5kw minimum to make a reliable electric range prius. Remember to keep a little in reserve to limp home if you deplete the main pack. I also believe that spinning the MG1 within the transmission would make a super high mpg hybrid. like from an aircooled ICE

  • Sweet!

So what would be the best approach to removing all of the ICE crap and replacing it with electric only?

  • Thanks, charging the batts fixed the low speed problem. also there seems to be no problem with lubrication. also cold weather limits discharge current limit (DCL).

inverter still runs cool enough to make this a success. soon we will try a higher battery voltage.

  • Great stuff Steve!

    Keep posting, PLEASE!

  • where can i buy a cheap prius

  • Just the original mains. all the packs are paralleled. HSS is similar to out of gas mode, but without the engine trying to restart. visit the eaa-phev website and read the email archives. look for a product to be released soon.

  • is there system main relays for each battery? did you just connect two + - wires that go from the battery to inverter ( for each batttery ) together in parallell? how do you engage high speed stealth?

  • can you swap the engine with any other toyota 4 cylinder that shares the same flywheel?

  • I would think so..the Echo and the Yaris use basically the same engine. We are working on taking control of the original engine.

  • Thanks! Now We are working on a way to allow the driver to turn the gas engine on or off,

    instead of Hybrid ECU control

  • this is great!!!
