i think it's still better to get tested, there's not really a downside. if it tests positive either you have aids or another transferable disease, so it's best you abstain from sex anyways. it'd probably be smarter to get tested multiple times, so the temporary things that can cause the false positives wont affect it.
that's what i'm saying, it'd still be safer to not have sex under any of those conditions anyway, so the risks are minimal. you can just get tested again later to see if it was a temporary condition. take a pregnancy test beforehand. people can go 6 months without sex especially if they have a high chance of having some sort of STD

Its just an illusionearly on when we were working in collaboration with Abbott Laboratories, it was clear that there was no gold standard for HIV—no direct isolation of the virus. Nobody has ever demonstrated that HIV is present when any combination, or any one, of these tests comes up positive. None of these tests can be validated, ever. Period. Because we dont have a way to isolate and culture HIV to prove its existence.

i think it's still better to get tested, there's not really a downside. if it tests positive either you have aids or another transferable disease, so it's best you abstain from sex anyways. it'd probably be smarter to get tested multiple times, so the temporary things that can cause the false positives wont affect it.

They are NONspecific antibody tests and antibodies cross react all the time. Without the gold standard it's IMPOSSIBLE to make a specific diagnosis.

that's what i'm saying, it'd still be safer to not have sex under any of those conditions anyway, so the risks are minimal. you can just get tested again later to see if it was a temporary condition. take a pregnancy test beforehand. people can go 6 months without sex especially if they have a high chance of having some sort of STD

modern ELIZA tests are 98% accurate.The infection can be confirmed with even greater accuracy with PCR (which detects the viral RNA),with western blot which can detect the viral antigens like p24 and if you want to be even more certain with viral culture.One test may be wrong but several kinds of tests?very unlikely.

The PCR is NOT intended to confirm the antibody tests.

Alloimmune mice...were shown to make antibodies against gp120 and p24 of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and mice of [two] autoimmune strains...made antibodies against gp120. This is surprising because the mice were not exposed to HIV. [i.e. HIV proteins are found in uninfected mice!!]

Western Blot assay should not be used as a screening test. WB should be viewed as a supplemental test which can be used to confirm positive results obtained from EIA. However: Specificity is LESS than that of EIA. A significant number of indeterminate blots are seen in low risk populations.

yes you can. All culturing looks for the is the presence of RT. That's it. ALL retroviruses have it and so can normal human cells.

The best proof that HIV causes AIDS is the fact that if antiretroviral drugs (drugs that prevent HIV from replicating) manage to reduce the HIV viral load in a HIV + patient then the development of full blown AIDS and death is prevented up to 80%.
