The easy response is that the situation is the result of crazed Bible thumpers, but it's so much more far-reaching than that. It's embedded in culture and tradition as well. At least the terrible bullying of young gays is, in the last year or so, being recognized by the media. The latest suicide of the young musician being spied on by his peers is, and again thanks to the easy spread of news now, made much more prominent than previously.
i have heaps of gay friends, guys and gals... they are all very close friends with me, and i am straight.. i love adam lambert because he is very outspoken with his beliefs and isnt afraid to show himself to the world.
yes im a straight female from australia... :) ive loved adam since watching his audition on american idol, without even knwoing about his sexuality, i loved his honesty, and his performance style, and his voice.
Since when does being gay make you more interesting, talented, or a better artist? Since when does it make you more special? If we deny them anything at all, then it automatically makes us homophobic? You want to be treated the same, then you want to be treated differently at the same time. If you suck, you suck but you should not be accepted just because your gay and the show needs someone "different". People voted for Adam for a number of different reasons, including him being gay.
@AnneMorr I don't think you're suppose to see gay as being part of the mixture of "talent", they're both different entities that should be considered independent of each other. I think Adam was representing the gay community as someone who can actually sing, and I definitely think he can, , which is why there was so much support for him, and there was why there was so much controversy when he didn't win.
@AnneMorr The cultural situation you speak about was not made by gays themselves. If there are contradictions they are the result of socio-cultural conditions imposed under heterocentric dominance
I don't think anybody with a brain or a heart holds anything against gays in this day and age, but Rex is right. I don't like it when my male dancers look like little fairies up on stage.

@HantoKah I certainly think so. Of course USA is a very wide country and depends on where you look but here in Spain I think the society is more open and flexible in order to adapt to different form of living. Cheers
rex harrington is my neighbor. he's gay. do i care? NO!! he's really nice and he's perfectly fine about his sexuality! u shouldn't judge someone just cuz their gay...
Really if i was one of the judges I would have a thought it was a little odd too. not becuase of their sexual orientation it would make things confusing when it comes to ball room dancing. When Nigel said they might be alienating the audience he meant that only a certain type of people would vote for them becuase of thier choice in partners and vis versa. But overall I do think GLAD was over reacting about the whole thing.
Oh please ... Just look at Kupono and Brandon. Effeminate? Ooooh yeah, but not on the dance floor. Travis Wall is gay too. Give me a break. Over-reaction to the max!
I think nigel just said it wrong ... I have seen two men pull off couple dancing. These guys just sucked. Great dancers can create new styles..... the two brothers who were overly affectionate were creepy ( the ones who got cut ...not the broadway brothers)
What bothered me was Nigel saying that two male dancers dancing together wasn't masculine - male dancers doing ballroom are never exactly dripping with masculinity and those two guys were just as good as any other, but certainly no less masculine. It was irritating
It wasn't blatant homophobia that did Adam in (he is profoundly more talented than the winner). It just means that 12-13 year old girls couldn't fantasize about being his girlfriend - yes, I know he's married but don't forget, their were girls who wanted to believe John Lennon would leave Cynthia for them. I'm not saying there wasn't some homophobia, but I believe that the largest voting block were pre-pubescent girls who wanted THEIR idol.
I agree. While partner dancing demands someone leading, there was the possibility of exploring the idea of two men or women dancing that way (where they share the leading role).
I wonder how the judges would react if they didn't exchange the leading role while dancing?
they would have said " well ... we can see who is leading .. but we don't buy the chemistry ... I for one would not like to see male-male ballroom dancing or any such thing ... please keep you sexuality off the dance floor ...
I don't agree with your comment about sexuality. One sexuality has always had the chance of being on the dance floor. When you dance, you should be able to express your self. That is the essence of dancing: a physical expression of one's life, a moment in time, where you are and where you want to be.
Notice that on the show they rarely critic the physical expression of the dancer, they talk about the technique and the skills.

Nigel is ignorant and probably a suppressed gay. Adam is brave, honest, guy with integrity.

it´s a shame how gay people are everyday criticized and disrespected in USA. A gay from Spain.

@pep6666 So you mean that the culture in Spain is more gay-friendly than that in the USA?
