There's a number of songs on the youth album that pretty much confirm the "speculation" as to why Ross left at the same time Ed decided to divorce his wife. Why don't you listen to the tracks "Him" and "How Do You Love?" for more insight.
I know the songs well. And yeah, you can draw some conclusions from the lyrics. However, nothing short of Ed or Ross laying it all out would be a solid answer for me. I'm a scientific kinda guy, I need more than just speculation and assumptions.
I think you're right that they've talked about i I'm not sure what exactly happened, but when Collective Soul was inducted into the Georgia music Hall of Fame Ross was on Ed's list of thank-you's during his speech. It's not really a huge deal but that tells me that the two guys aren't arch enemys.
@BananaHurricane He shouldn't have slept with Ed's wife, as awesome as his riffs are I just can't respect him for what he did. Talk about biting the hand that feeds eh?

I wish they would put this whole set out on dvd. I love all of the songs I have seen CS do at Woodstock 99. Probably my fav era for them.

Very cool - would've been fun seeing them play back then. They still know how to rock the house today! Loved hearing Where the River Flows in Vegas!!
