I replaced the right rear wheel cylinder without disconnecting the parking brake on my 1994 Saturn SC 5-speed. Now the parking brake pulls up much higher and the equalizer cable on that side pulls much more forward. Help!
i have a quiestion, so what if i want to check my pads and see that they have to bee replaced,, i just go buy the new pads and the drum put it back on with out buying new ones? or do i need to drums too?
Rich, thanks again for your help. I reamed the hole in the brake shoe and used a 3/8 inch socket to fit over the pin and hammered it in with no problem.
Yes. It is the parking brake pin.The new shoes come with new pins. How do I put the new pins in the new shoes? I tried to hammer it in but was afraid I might damage the new shoes.
@Koolbreaze7 I have not replaced that pin on the Saturn but have replaced similar pins that would not go in easy on new shoes because of the finish in the hole.In those cases i would my three point scraper to make the pin fit (which i have a video of making one).
Rich, once again, you are the man. I put on a new drum and problem solved. No more knocking. I was about to change the rear shoes for good measure, but I couldn't get the new pin for the adjuster in the new shoes. What is the best way to do this? Thanks again.
@Koolbreaze7 Are you taking about the pin for the parking brake is so it is held on by a C clip which you open up with a screwdriver remove the clip then tap out the pin or use a vicegrip.
Hi,Rich. My rear R.rear brake knocks over 60mph.I feel the knock through the rear floor and on the parking brake lever. It is not constant tho. I think the shoe is contacting the drum, then slipping off.Shoes are not worn, drum smooth not scored or grooved.Used brake cleaner, sprayed whole assembly.Put brake grease on all contact points and also on the P.brake cable where it contacted backing plate.Possible to sand the rust spots?Maybe have drum turned?Any suggestions?
Great video Rich !!! I have a question. When ever my car is parked all night long and it rains, I drive it in the morning and my rear breaks screech. Now once I gun it and I get out of first gear the screeching stops. Do I just need to remove the drum and clean everything with break cleaner or do I have to change out parts ?
@richpin06a Well I might as well get a bit more hands on experience from your world famous videos and replace them myself. If the shoes have no rust would it be OK to keep them or am I better offer just replacing. Thanks again. And to anyone who has read this click on the ads yto the right as much as possible for Richpin06a
@MrRaiders6769 If the shoes look good reuse them.Do not forget to check the springs and wheel cylinders.Yes please click on the ADs i get a few cents for that.
good news. like every time i do work on my car i havent done before, its in the first few steps i get hung up and thus overcome with grief and frustration, but after the first handful of hang-ups its smooth sailing. ive gotten one side done. i forgot exactly which of the top springs went exactly where. i put the big one on back and the smaller "crook neck" one in front. also i forgot to get lube for the contact points.
@shrivalup so ill drive a mile down the road to advance when im finished to determine whether it will be necessary to get some and (lets hope not) come back home to take it apart, lube, then put humpty back together again. it wasnt as hard as i had been led to believe, just more of a hassle than disc brakes, but, ive gotta say it: drum brakes suck donkey dick! are they still putting this type of brake on todays autos? why?
youre videos are spot on. thanks scads. i hardly look at my haynes manual anymore (found out today that ive actually lost it) okay...i finally got the drums off. ive removed the old shoe from the ebrake lever attachment but i cant get the piece, the one that holds together attachment and shoe, through the hole in the shoe. it doesnt fit. must one take a screwdriver or nail set type thing and hammer it into place?
@shrivalup ill check to see if the other bolt thing, the one used to connect shoe and actuating lever, fits in the pad or if it fits the other pad. the pads looked identical though. i took quite a gander at 'em.
@richpin06a Using a socket wrench as a nail set i tapped it in with little difficulty. that pointer would have come in handy yesterday - wouldnt have been a start today finish tomorrow job. but HEY!, i got it done! shes got new shoes! but, i have to do it again - ive got a leaky wheel cylinder. HA! aint that a bitch. luckily i know a guy, specializes in saturns. i scored two slightly used cylinders for ten bucks. unluckily i have to learn to leech the brake lines. keep up the good work Richpin.
i cant get the drums off. cant figure out how to retract the shoes. tell us how to take off the drum when it doesnt just slide off and how to retract the shoes. my drum wiggles and almost comes off but its hung about half way. do saturns require any shoe retracting.
@shrivalup Saturn put the window in the backing plate on the wrong side.I have tried a couple of time to come up with a solution and failed ever time. The good news for me is i have not run into a stuck drum yet ( knock on wood)but if i do i will make or buy a drum remover.
@richpin06a i put a puller on the drum on the other side. that drum wasnt rusted either but it was tight as a drum(huh, get it) - couldnt budge it an inch by hand. when i tighten the puller something inside snapped (gave me and my buddy quite a jolt) and then the drum came right off. still cant get the other one. thanks you soo much for the timely response...and what the hell?!?! saturn put the peep hole on the wrong side?!?! is there even one of those sprockety things in there?

do i have to remove all of those things to replace the wheel cylinder? and i am totally lost on the adjustment of the shoes. what are you exactly doing?
@screwpimp yes you have to remove all those part to change the wheel cylinders. After everything is back in place you turn the star wheel adjuster and fit the drum till there is a slit drag of the brake shoes and you are done.
omg thank you for showing this vid, i have a honda civic 96 and i've been trying to find a vid on how to remove the brakes and you're the only one who has a clear vid and also you didn't like rush it through and also you made it easy to follow and understand. so thank you. i know it's not the same kind of car but it's the same thing when it comes to the back brakes. thank you. =D
Rich, how do you get the drums off when the shoes have made a ridge in the outer edge of the drum? I pulled the dust cover off the backing plate to access the adjuster, but there was no adjustment wheel to back off the brake shoes. I did get the drum off after a couple hours of agony. The geniuses at saturn appear to have made an engineering blooper, the wheel used to adjust the brakes manually is at the opposite end from where the access hole is. thanks for any help, dano
@tyton1234 Yes they dropped the ball when they put the access hole in the backing plate. It is doable with a wire and screwdriver but is very frustrating and time consuming. It would be a lot faster and less aggravating to use a drum remover tool but how many of us have that at our disposal.
hey rich, im doing a complete brake job , including changing the brake fluid,i am using a reverse injection method ,is it ok to comletely suck out all the fluid from the master, to get at the sediment ,before pumping in new fluid? i know you are not supposed to allow the master to get below the low mark, but isnt this true only when you are pressing down on the brake causing damage to the seals and diapham in the booster? thanks rich
@karlakatie1522 Makes sense that the injector is now the master cylinder and the reservoir is the bleeder so you should be able to clean the sediment.
I feel silly, it takes me all day to do it and you did it on 7 minutes. I have a Corolla and it seems the same, thanks for the nice video, its clear, easy to understand and set at the right pace.
ok well here i am doing this and i figured hey its gonna be rusted on the drum itself, well i cant get it off for the life of me....do you think its because the shoes are pressed against the drum and wont allow it to come off? i mean i got it to wiggle alot back and fourth but its like something is holding it on...my dad said there was a tab on the back face and you can stick a skinny screw driver or something in there to adjust the shoes to allow the drum to come off but i cant even see inside
I'm having this same issue on my 92 Saturn S Series. Someone told me that the shoes can wear a track into the drum so it cant come off and you have to mess with an adjuster wheel
It says in the Haynes Manual for my car that there is a plug on the backing plate that you have to remove.
Thanks for the help. Right now I'm trying to insert a screwdriver to play with the adjuster. I'm trying to replace a broken lug stud on the passenger side rear.
@bdwsr88888 The drum is worn out so it has a little edge formed due to wear, the shoes are holding the drum because of that edge, try pulling on the drum and in the same time tap the drum with a hammer from sideways, the drum and the shoes are probably compromised and if what i write dosen`t work brute force is you last option. Good luck!
hey ol pal, couple quest.s, is there a certain no. of years when you should change the cylinder automatically ?(even if not leaking) and isnt there a way to adjust down the adjuster from the rear to loosen the drum before you take it off ?!? thankz bud !!!
@therockkkkher No certain number years that i know of just check for leaks every brake job. Most drum brakes will have a little window in the backing plate were you can adjust the brakes.
i've tried heat on the brake bleeder valve,i've tried pentrating oil, i have tried the little tool that fits inside the bleeder valve to break it loose from the inside. i must be doing something really wrong. by the way thank ya'll for your comments on my post. its been awhile since i've been on here. so thanks again and i'll keep trying.
@largefilipino Using penetrating oil on the drum at the hub area a day before the job can save quite a bit of aggravation getting the drum off in most cases.
Hey richpin, any idea how much more work is required to pull the entire rear hub assembly? I'm going to do my brakes this weekend and I had planned to replace the hub/bearing assembly as well due to rubbing/humming coming from the rear end (very noticeable above 35mph).
Hey my dad has been trying to remove the break drum and it won't even budge. He's tried a product similar to the pd blaster you mentioned and it still won't come off.
What would you recommend??? He tried hitting it with one of those rubber rubber head sledge hammers like his mechanic friend told him to but it still won't come off.
@girl123interrupteder Snap On sells a nice brake drum puller but who can afford it.My best recommendation is to keep using penetrating oil and hitting it with a hammer. You have to remember it took a lot of years to rust on so it will take time to remove.
sounds good. I can hear him hitting it with the hammer outside. This thing seriously isn't coming off without a fight. I asked my dad why he couldn't just pry it off with like a crow bar and he said something about it warping the part behind it.
So how long would you expect replacing the brake pads to take for a beginner? I've done disc brake pads before but never drum. Can you believe my mate was just quoted $500 to replace the rear brake pads on a 1991 ford laser thats only done 70,000km!
I'm gonna take the hub off and check remaining meat on the pads in the next couple of days and maybe replace them..
Will th rear drum come off if you can't reach the adjuster from the backside plug. Great video but if there is a ridge and cant reach adjuster do you just use a puller?
this video helped me out with my 05 corolla its the same brake system. my brother has 95 Saturn sl2 and were trying to take a look at the rear brakes and its really hard to remove the drum we sprayed w40 and bang it really hard and nothing. any help?
Wd40 is not a good penetrating oil for this job try using PB blaster. You have to remember it took years to rust that drum on so it will take some time.
yea i can see that well we got the drum off by forcing it out and everything looks good except the cylinders where really bad so i replaced it. thanks for the help buddie
ok i just replace one side. when im tighing it with the wrench right when its really tight that should be good enough right ? i shouldnt over tightin it ?
hey this video helped me out. and when i removed the brake i noticed my rear wheel cylinder started leaking. What do i do ? replace it? help me out please.
The Drum slid off as easy as could be... AFTER I took off the emergency brake! HA! That cost me about 15 minutes of wrestling with the drum because I thought it was rusted! Oh well, the other side will be even easier - I watched bits and pieces of this vid throughout! Thanks again!
Thank you for this video. I was able to do my own brake job. I especially thank you for mentioning that you should check under the rubber dust boot of the cylinder to see if its leaking. My mine so I replaced it. I made the mistake of pumping the brakes with the brake shoes off and PING! The cylinder piston shot out. Now I have the bleed the brakes due to air in the lines...But it needed bleeding anyway. I reviewed your video many times to make sure I understood everything. THANK YOU!
The rear brakes on my SL2 sqeak a bit each morning (has been raining lately) but after one or two stops they are fine for the whole day until the next morning where it does the same thing. I suppose I could take it apart and see whats happening. I think it gets a light rust overnight that scrubs off with the first drive of the day. Do you think its anything serious?
i find myself watching your videos for future referance don't even need rear brakes yet but will be heads up before I start when I do. Emmy time for richpin06
Whats the story with ceramic pads, if a person wanted to use ceramic pads on the front, would different rotors be required also or will ceramic pads work with the original rotors?
Man, you make it look so easy. This is the first time I've had to do this on my wife's saturn. I hope I'm up to it. I don't have any of the specialty tools.
I know this sounds stupid, but I know people you have done it... did you make sure your e-brake wasn't on? You can pound on that sucker all day and get no where if the brake is on.
Great video! I watched it four times and did both rear brakes in half and hour!

@TheInsanetrucker They make a tool for a air impact wrench that is suppose to be good at removing frozen bleeders.

Gonna work on a friend's Saturn wagon this weekend and checking for any surprises. Don't see any. THANKS for this video!!

@largefilipino Using penetrating oil on the drum at the hub area a day before the job can save quite a bit of aggravation getting the drum off in most cases.
richpin06a 1 year ago
Geez how many parts are there to drum brakes?/
professorxox 1 year ago
Hey richpin, any idea how much more work is required to pull the entire rear hub assembly? I'm going to do my brakes this weekend and I had planned to replace the hub/bearing assembly as well due to rubbing/humming coming from the rear end (very noticeable above 35mph).
kkersten 1 year ago
@kkersten Four bolts hold the bearing and hub in place.Check out my video "Bolted Hub Wheel Bearing Removal Walkthrough " for further info.

i have a 1985 Bronco 4x4, left rear bleeder valve wont brake loose no matter what i've tried. HELP??
TheInsanetrucker 1 year ago
@TheInsanetrucker Have you tried putting a little heat on it.
richpin06a 1 year ago
Hey my dad has been trying to remove the break drum and it won't even budge. He's tried a product similar to the pd blaster you mentioned and it still won't come off.
What would you recommend??? He tried hitting it with one of those rubber rubber head sledge hammers like his mechanic friend told him to but it still won't come off.
girl123interrupted 1 year ago
@girl123interrupteder Snap On sells a nice brake drum puller but who can afford it.My best recommendation is to keep using penetrating oil and hitting it with a hammer. You have to remember it took a lot of years to rust on so it will take time to remove.
richpin06a 1 year ago
sounds good. I can hear him hitting it with the hammer outside. This thing seriously isn't coming off without a fight. I asked my dad why he couldn't just pry it off with like a crow bar and he said something about it warping the part behind it.
girl123interrupted 1 year ago
@girl123interrupted Sometimes i heat the drum with a touch which helps.By the way you have a nice YouTube channel.
richpin06a 1 year ago
With a touch? Oh thanks:)
girl123interrupted 1 year ago
@girl123interrupted Sorry that is a torch not a touch...lol

So how long would you expect replacing the brake pads to take for a beginner? I've done disc brake pads before but never drum. Can you believe my mate was just quoted $500 to replace the rear brake pads on a 1991 ford laser thats only done 70,000km!
I'm gonna take the hub off and check remaining meat on the pads in the next couple of days and maybe replace them..

do rear pistons need to be pushed back into the cylinder?
foxdmulder 2 years ago
Not if you have drum brakes.
richpin06a 2 years ago
Will th rear drum come off if you can't reach the adjuster from the backside plug. Great video but if there is a ridge and cant reach adjuster do you just use a puller?
SHADOW10621 2 years ago
great video to learn by. now next time, mark a stud and drum before u remove the drum. now its is true that u put it on the same that u took off.
drewsflesh 2 years ago
This is the drum brakes on the saturn s-series.
richpin06a 2 years ago
@richpin06a
So which way is outward (brakes tighter) on the adjuster, clockwise, or counter clockwise?

this video helped me out with my 05 corolla its the same brake system. my brother has 95 Saturn sl2 and were trying to take a look at the rear brakes and its really hard to remove the drum we sprayed w40 and bang it really hard and nothing. any help?
ponte42589 2 years ago
Wd40 is not a good penetrating oil for this job try using PB blaster. You have to remember it took years to rust that drum on so it will take some time.
richpin06a 2 years ago
yea i can see that well we got the drum off by forcing it out and everything looks good except the cylinders where really bad so i replaced it. thanks for the help buddie
ponte42589 2 years ago
ok i just bought a new cyinder i was told i might as well replace the other side also is this true?
ponte42589 2 years ago
Yes,even if the other side is not leaking chances are it will shortly.
richpin06a 2 years ago
ok i just replace one side. when im tighing it with the wrench right when its really tight that should be good enough right ? i shouldnt over tightin it ?
ponte42589 2 years ago
hey this video helped me out. and when i removed the brake i noticed my rear wheel cylinder started leaking. What do i do ? replace it? help me out please.
ponte42589 2 years ago
Yes replace the wheel cylinder and after it is all back together with the drum on bleed the new cylinder.
richpin06a 2 years ago
tnk u so much.. it really helped

Hey, that doesn't look so bad! I have been putting this off forever because I was expecting it to be so much worse...
Thank You for this great video resource!
Vaught68 2 years ago
If you live in the salt belt rusted on brake drums are the worse part of the job.
richpin06a 2 years ago
Well, I went and got my stuff to do the job - we'll see tomorrow! :O) I live in Virginia, so hopefully not TOO bad. Thanks!
Vaught68 2 years ago
Does the drum come off that easy if its NOT rusted on or is there something holding it on?
balaun17 2 years ago
The drum will come off this easy if there is no rust and the drum has no ridge.
richpin06a 2 years ago
The Drum slid off as easy as could be... AFTER I took off the emergency brake! HA! That cost me about 15 minutes of wrestling with the drum because I thought it was rusted! Oh well, the other side will be even easier - I watched bits and pieces of this vid throughout! Thanks again!
Vaught68 2 years ago
Thank you for this video. I was able to do my own brake job. I especially thank you for mentioning that you should check under the rubber dust boot of the cylinder to see if its leaking. My mine so I replaced it. I made the mistake of pumping the brakes with the brake shoes off and PING! The cylinder piston shot out. Now I have the bleed the brakes due to air in the lines...But it needed bleeding anyway. I reviewed your video many times to make sure I understood everything. THANK YOU!
macinenterprise 2 years ago 5
if you have a mushy pedal, then obviously your problem was your wheel cylinders not the rest of the brake system
Da1NoNLi973 2 years ago
I have bled my brakes after new disc brakes and Drum with new hardware.Shoes looked ok.
wheel cylinders were leaking.
I still have a mushy pedal.
Should I re bleed the brakes??
I also replaced the the front hoses.
tjsstump 2 years ago
There is still air in there that needs to be bleed.
richpin06a 2 years ago
Hi Rich,
The rear brakes on my SL2 sqeak a bit each morning (has been raining lately) but after one or two stops they are fine for the whole day until the next morning where it does the same thing. I suppose I could take it apart and see whats happening. I think it gets a light rust overnight that scrubs off with the first drive of the day. Do you think its anything serious?
Thanks,
Jerry
cjtkvincent 2 years ago
I do not think it is serious.New drums and shoes will make it go away.
richpin06a 2 years ago
i find myself watching your videos for future referance don't even need rear brakes yet but will be heads up before I start when I do. Emmy time for richpin06
eddie71664 2 years ago 2
rich , can you just pull on the emergency brake to do a final adjustment on the shoes.?
roberge32 2 years ago
If the adjuster is working properly, yes

Whats the story with ceramic pads, if a person wanted to use ceramic pads on the front, would different rotors be required also or will ceramic pads work with the original rotors?

good job, brake cleaner does get expensive,,soapy water will also do the trick, next time, do it on a super duty or fleet, good job by the way
drewsflesh 2 years ago
thanks! turns out both my wheel cylinders are leaking and they were buried under a thick layer of crud. no wonder my brakes are mushy.
efemall 2 years ago
Man, you make it look so easy. This is the first time I've had to do this on my wife's saturn. I hope I'm up to it. I don't have any of the specialty tools.

The hardest part of the job will be getting the drum off.Using penetrating oil weeks before you start will help.

Thank you very much for such a great instructional video, I was beating up my brakes and doing more damage than repair.
I also had to replace the wheel cylinder, but with your help It was so much fun to do.
Great job.

The hardest part is getting the drum off - I hammered on mine for hours before giving up.
Celidus 3 years ago
I know this sounds stupid, but I know people you have done it... did you make sure your e-brake wasn't on? You can pound on that sucker all day and get no where if the brake is on.

Very good instruction for drum brakes. Thank you so much!...Is a new parking brake "C" clip included with new brake shoes?
cyberexposure 4 years ago
New C clips are not included with your new shoes. You will have to buy them separately or buy a rear brake hardware kit.

when u adjust the shoes outwards towards the boot does that mean that the shoes are pushed out towards you to slightly tough the boot?
haste4daylight 4 years ago
Yes you need to adjust the shoes outward till they make slight contact with the drum.
