One of my fave Mountain songs, probably more than Nantucket. Love the cord progressions. Very unique.
Having abstained from Mountain for a while and recently revisited there discography (which I'm greatly enjoying) Leslie West's guitar playing reminds me of a sound should you mix early ZZ Top with Tony Iommi,
Ladies in gentleman. I bring you the real deal MOUNTAIN! The best band of all time in my opinion. I LOVE this video and anything with Felix Pappalardi. Felix was a true genius of production and a master of the bass. He deserves more recognition.
@turion8000 Who's the fat dude on mic? Are you serious? If you don't know Leslie West when you see and hear him, maybe you never woke up this morning. Either that or you just stopped by to watch this video by accident. If an accident like that should ever happen again, I'd suggest you don't stop next time and just tell your story walking.
Although Les and Corky have continued under the Mountain with modest sucess, the original lineup (with Felix and Steve) was the only one that mattered....
Finally, some footage of the original quartet band with keyboard player Steve Knight. Contrary to popular belief, the original Mountain was NOT a power trio as it is often reported. They had a keyboard player named Steve Knight and he was definitely a member of the band...
Many prayers going out to the King of Tone. The leg amputation was a success. Now the toughest part begins, the recovery. We are all behind you Leslie! You have a wonderful family and friends around you. We will lift you up like you've lifted US up. Long live Leslie West!!!!!
Mountain in its original format--Leslie, Felix, Corky, and yes, even Steve Knight--was my favorite band back in the late 60's and the 70's. I didn't just listen to them more than any other group, I probably listened to them more than every other group put together; and to this day, while I rate Clapton's performance of Crossroads as my all time favorite live guitar performance, Leslie is still my overall favorite guitarist.
@freethinktherefore You said it! I met Leslie and Corky at the Rocking The Rivers fest in Three Forks, MT a few years back. Leslie struck me as being a bit standoffish, but Corky was very friendly and easy to talk to. I noticed I kind of took him aback when I expressed the wish that Felix could have been there. I guess he didn't realize there were hardcore Mountain fans even in the wild west of Montana.
You don't hear that heavy jamming sound in modern bands with the same kind of improvisation and interplay between the players. Lange is like a cave man on drums and gives the band that driving freight train sound. Baker did the same with Cream. You don't hear that sound much if any even in modern heavy bands.
This band are almost unheard of in the UK. I say "almost" because bizarrely part of Nantucket Sleighride was used as the theme tune for a current affairs show in the UK in the early 80s. You would have hard rock and then a centrepiece interview with Margaret Thatcher. What a sound - better live than on record! This is giving every 70s rock band a real run for their money. They are certainly a well kept secret.
Good God! This ripped ass. Corky Laing on drums was as hot as Chernobyl. Great interplay between him and bassist Pappalardi. West was always a mountain.
ok kids, blow your mind time. Youtube home page, type in "vagrants" and look at the clean cut video with 88000+ views. Big Leslie West steps off the stage for a short guitar solo in the second half of the video. See if you can recognize him. This was before psychedelics. Vagrants was his first band, Long Island NY., 60's.
I received a message from a guy in Australia who said he had Lucifers Friend on VHS video tape. This was in the mid 1994. I sent him 20 bucks and he sent me the video tape.It was in PAL format so I had to have the video reformatted. It was all beat club performances. This was on the tape along with King Crimson (Larks tounge in aspic) Jethro tull, Status Quo bunch of em. Man I was stoked. Remember this was long before Youtube. If utube goes all youll have is Lady Gaga and Justin Beaver videos!
This was on a DVD called "Let It Rock". It had a lot of rare music videos, I'd recommend owning it. It's got Deep Purple, Free, The Who, Yes, Jethro Tull, Meatloaf, Bachman Turner Overdrive and some others.
was this from Channel 13 Public tv in NY. There was a show called >the show" I saw them whne I was 11 and was hooked, added thme to my zep and 10 yrs after collection - West is one of the best of all time no doubt. Thanks for posting

@thebrownhornet1974 Amen!!! Leslie West and the rest of Mountain belongs in the Hall, no question! Check Facebook, theres a petition to get him in!!!!
Rock doesn't get much better than this and Rock Guitarists don't come any better than Leslie ....or so said Jimi after hearing Mountain rehearse at one of his Studios one night.
I saw Mountain 2 times and they blasted me right to the stars.
Put them and the GFR back to back and your in Rock Heaven
This is the end of Flower Power, baby! Peace and Love and PISSED OFF! One of the angriest songs ever by one of the greatest bands ever! This is raw energy at its finest! Five hundred stars.
What TV show is this from? I recognize it from other performances by Black Sabbath,Yes,Captain Beefheart and King Crimson in the early 70's.Not sure if this is British,Dutch,German or Danish TV.
Which ever show it is,I'd love them to release these old performances onto DVD(unless they already did and in that case, where do I find it?)
If this song isn't one of Rock's BEST then I 've never heard a Rock song !
I saw the band live twice and they could make your bones rattle.
Jimi Hendrix on his Elecric Ladyland DVD once asked of one of his confidants while listening to Mountain rehearse in a second studio at Electic Ladyland " am I as good as Leslie West ?"
Do you SEE Corky on his drum-kit? THIS, is Ginger Baker territory! Some have said that Mountain picked-up where Cream left-off. I think that's a pretty good description. Rest in Peace, Felix. And rock-ON, Leslie!
@tallpaul88 Mountain was the American CREAM...Since Felix was Creams producer they ROCKED and what a sad day it was when Felix passed ! RIP He had a voice of an Angel and played Bass 'ala Jack Bruce style ! More Music less Politics!

What incredible tone ! The power produced here is just astonishing, despite the recording capabilities of the time, you still feel it! The interplay during the solo should be a lesson to all the modern rockers who substitute flash for substance! I could go on for weeks...........
About as real and raw as it will ever get. West and the rest are playing for the moment. Corky is hustling to make it happen and is playing with emotion. Felix produced Cream. This is somethin we likely will never see or hear again.
man!! these guys make the hair on the back of my neck stand on end, they're the only band i can play a CD of start to finish without skippin tracks!!! every tune's a belter IMHO...
fucking tops!...met leslie after night of the guitars gig ,Edinburough 80 somthing,he came out the back door looking kinda crazy and looking into my eyes real intense and goes '' do you play? do you play ?'' to all us kids , i sez ''yeah'' and he roars ''well keep fuckin playin!!!'' ....very funny guy in person...
I know I harp on how awesome I think Leslie is....because he is, and is far and away my favorite guitarist of all time. But I should add, for the record, that Felix is my favorite bass player. Amazing voice. Amazing writer. Amazing fuzz bass. No other like Felix since. I remember when I bought Mountain's Greatest Hits on a whim. Saw it in some discount rack at Tape World when I was like fourteen. Album blew my truckin' mind. Blew it away.
YES! I remember seeing this on USA's Night Flight back in the day. Agreed Felix is sorely missed...there will never be another bass player as heavy as him. Leslie still rules though.
That solo kicks ass!!! Pappalardi is greatly missed. there hasent been a bass player like him. dont give me flea cause flea cudnt touch Pappalardi's bass
Mountain not only epitomized the times, the are what rock 'n roll was always meant to be...raw, powerful, energetic, brutal and highly creative. This appears to be a promo video before the days of MTV...most bands would be satisfied with a synched performance of their studio work. Not Mountain! What balls they had! Never again shall we see such raw, diabolical emotion and power that those boys gave us!
Okay, I've made the comment before on other Mountain vids that Leslie West is NOT on the 100 Greatest Guitars List from Rolling Stone Magazine. I think a petition to change this needs to be started, because it's a crime and it makes the list seem trite and silly. But, almost as bad is the fact that, from what I can recall, Corky Laing is not anywhere to be mentioned on the 100 greatest drummers list. Okay, so that makes two petitions we need.
Toe you are correct. If Mountain WERE big suck-ups in their career, became pretty boys... it probably WOULD have gotten them more mainstream and onto the lists and into the Hall. But guess what? That would have made Mountain just like any other group, and Mountain as we know it, with all its rebel and cult signatures, would be null and void.
Fuk'n young fuk'n punks make me laugh..they make me openly laugh when they say Dave Grohl is the best drummer ever...get tha' fuck outta here with that shit.Corky Laing,(and Ian Paice),are the BEST!!
These guys had the big balls.

Leslie's dressed like he's going out for a walk in the snow, fer crissake! Ha! He must have baked under those hot TV lights.
In any case, no lip synching here. One of the great "live in the studio" performances. The band is on fire and in mid-season form.

So now I see where Slash got his idea for the hat. Another Leslie trait taken, and still the Big Guy gets the shaft in rock history.
Okay...maybe I'm stretching things a bit with the hat thing.

Fuck rolling stone and fuck the rock and roll 'hall of fame'!! I'm glad the thing we got is obscure and I want it to stay that way.
