"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," he said.
"And it's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,"
From Obama’s Dreams of My Father: ; 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'
From Obama’s Dreams of My Father:
I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, Dubois and Mandela.'
From Obama’s Dreams of My Father: 'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating> myself to whites.'
.
From Obama’s Dreams of My Father: 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mothers race.'
.
From Obama’s Dreams of My Father: 'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'
Hillary will lose because the Clintons are both pathological liars. Obama will do better than Hillary because he is more likable, but will still lose because his double life has now been exposed. McCain is a weak liberal in spite of his P.O.W. background, but will probably win only because of the enormous baggage the other two carry. You'd think in the U.S., we could get more competitive candidates. The "lesser of two evils" syndrome gets more extreme each election cycle!
jacknhole what definitive information do you have that proves obama is a muslim, you don't because he's not, please stop spreading LIES if you don't want him to win do it truthfully don't just make things up, and by the way what's so wrong with being muslim, it's sad to see your ignorance, get out and learn something, you're the true definition of "ignorance is bliss" Obama doesn't need an ignorant supporter like yourself
istrbo: Unite the country? Don't be fooled by the Obama the mainstream media feeds you. Obama, based on his voting record, is the most liberal senator going. Obama, by his carefully crafted associations subscribes to the same old tired, and ignorant, school of thought that blacks are "victims" of racism and we have to do more to help, when he, himself, is living proof that society is not racist as he is on the cusp of getting the nomination thanks to some white-bread states.
mazurbeem: Inspired by what, socialism? The same old tired rhetoric on race? Civil Rights passage in 1964 has done its job, but sadly too many blacks have not held up their end of the bargain. I want my leader to be honest and direct. I want Mr. Obama to display the courage to call on all blacks to take more responsibility for their actions and to quit ruining their lives and then try to blame it on whitey. Obama can do much good here and hopefully he doesn't drop the ball by placating the base.
If you can't empathize with people who's very skin color (something you can't really miss when you see them) is talked about like this, has such a history of oppression and discrimination (some of which persists today) then try opening your mind a little bit more. Have you ever had a jerk do something really (or even a little) mean to you? Have you ever gotten angry and complained to friends and family? Imagine now that this happens to you several times every day because of your skin color.
theparadox1083: Racism is NOT a major factor in society today. The biggest problem facing the black community today is 70% illegitimacy and sub-50% graduation rates. These are "self-inflicted" hardship where the individual is to blame, unless you want to lay part of the blame on a society of liberals who "enable" irresponsible behavior via excuses and social programs.
defzepled, your idea of "self-inflicted" hardship is seriously flawed. In this country the ceiling of success for most people is determined at birth. If you're born upper middle class and white, it's hard to succeed. Now imagine your father abandons you, your Mom works 3 jobs just to put food on the table, and your major friend base is criminals and drug dealers. Then factor in that everyone treats you like a criminal or a deadbeat regardless of what you do, and you're supposed to succeed?!?
cutesd: Wow, what a defeatist attitude you preach. Do you call that hope? Of course people who are born into poor situations beyond their control will have a tougher time succeeding and will have to work that much harder. So your message is give up, throw in the towel, everything is predestined for you so curl up in a fetal position and suck your thumb? Wow, that is very sad commentary on your part.
defzepled: you've completely misconstrued my comment. I'm merely pointing out that what this country needs is more support, more opportunity and less of the "tough love" routine that doesn't help anyone. Also we need less naivete from the whites in this country who just want to stop talking about racism.
cutesd: No, you are wrong. Boys and young men need a father figure who cares and practices discipline. "Tough Love" helps many people, while "mollycoddling" does not. All people are inherently lazy to differing degrees, so some people are more than happy to get something for nothing. A swift kick in the butt is needed sometimes, while a bleeding heart liberal does poorly behaving people no good, other than to resolve the cognitive dissonance that may exist in their own minds.
When I say people are inherently lazy, that is regardless of race, color or creed. cutesd, you just don't get it, do you? A new approach would be "tough love" and not the "nanny", "entitlement" state that has ruined so many lives. People need incentive to work, to restore their dignity and become self-sufficient, contributing members of society. Patronizing people with excuses is bigotry.
These people HAVE incentive to work it's called supporting a family. And working at a McDonalds doesn't bring a whole lot of dignity or money.
You say these people should go to college. HOW? If you have no money and can't afford the SAT classes that would get you a scholarship, & even community college is expensive how are you supposed to get a higher education? No college means no good job, no good job means you live in the ghetto. So I ask you, how are these people supposed to succeed?
I can do it, other people can do it. I took out student loans and worked 20 hours a week to go to college. It took years to pay off those college loans. Please be careful not to short-change people. Of course some people grow up on tougher circumstances and have to work that much harder to succeed in life, but preaching a defeatist attitude and making excuses is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
def: and I suppose you're going to go through and hand pick all the people who are worthy of help and all those who aren't?
You cannot arbitrarily decide who is worthy and who isn't. Your view is so narrow you only consider the aftermath, not everything that came before it. Lots of circumstances lead to children out of wedlock, drugs, gangs, etc. We should be examining the circumstances that lead to undesirable aftermaths and seek to change those circumstances thus affecting future aftermaths.
cutesd: What leads to children out of wedlock, drugs and gangs is irresponsible behavior and that is their own fault unless you want to lay some blame on a society of liberals who "enable" irresponsible behavior. There is plenty of opportunity out there, but people have to act responsibly and work hard, and some people have to work harder than others. Racism is not a factor in succeeding today and Obama's rise is living proof of that.
def: you're trying to make narrow an issue that is infinitely large and it shows lack of understanding.
Working hard will only get you so far. When I was 16 I worked at a restaurant where many people supported their families on $5 an hour. Those people worked HARD but they were never going to succeed. And these people were married, didn't do drugs and were not in gangs ... they were poor and they were Hispanic.
I am white and I succeeded because I had opportunity and support.
cutesd: Please get off your "irrational guilt trip". Yes, people need support and that is why too many blacks are killing themselves with a near 70% illegitimacy rate. Patronizing people with excuses and social programs though all too often just "enables" their irresponsible behavior. Illegitimacy rates of whites stands at 31.7% which is also completely unacceptable. Keep in mind that a disproportionate number of blacks are not failing due to racism, but rather by the poor decisions they make.
You should be blaming illegitimacy rates on poor sex education and lack of access to birth control. You think this is not a class thing? Rich people have health insurance so they can afford things like birth control and abortions. They're not smarter or more responsible, they just have the means to take care of it.
So yeah, let's take away all their social programs too, because kicking people when their down always helps.
def: Obama succeeded because he was raised in an environment that provided support and opportunity to him ... which is precisely my point. It is environment that determines more than anything to how much you will succeed.
Someone who is born middle class is more likely to stay middle class, someone born in the ghetto is more likely to stay in the ghetto. And it just so happens that most people in the middle class are white and most people in the ghetto are minorities.
cutesd: I agree and why is that so? Who made that environment, the rich white man? No the individual did! How you might ask. By having children out of wedlock and making other poor decisions. People have to work hard to break the vicious cycle of irresponsible behavior. It is much "easier" to blame others, but people of true character overcome and succeed.
cutesd: Life isn't fair. Some people are smarter than others, some people have to work harder than others, some people are pro athletes, some people get lucky breaks, but that is life. That is the diversity of life. All people are inherently equal, but our diverse traits and charteristics, the decisions we all make and so forth lead us down differing paths.
All people are inherently equal, the circumstances under which they are raised are not. I'm not suggesting giving anyone anything, I'm suggesting we actually give them a chance to try ... which they currently do not have.
And what do you suggest society does with all the people who've already made the "bad decisions"? Just wait for them to die?!?
People who you say have fucked up their lives are just screwed and that's that? Guess where our criminal element comes from?
cutesd: It is a scientific "fact" that households that don't have a mother and "father" are much more likely to live in poverty, turn to crime and repeat the cycle. Each individual has the "power" to make their own destiny, and some people do need help, and I am willing to help those that are willing to help themselves, but those who make choices to have children out of wedlock, deal drugs, skip school and so forth make their own bed and I have zero sympathy for that ilk.
cutesd: A disproportionate number of blacks do live in poverty, see a 70% illegitimacy rate for a big part of your explanation. Don't blame anyone else for this as the individual has the "power", but you could argue that a society of liberals "enable" irresponsible behavior with their excuses and handouts.
If I were running for president and I had friends or family who made public comments that I didn't agree with (no matter how much I cared about them) it would be very, very foolish of me to NOT distance myself. It's not that I secretly wish to push their agenda so we need to part ways until I convince people I'm really a nice guy. I'm protecting myself and my mission from ignorant people who would try to link me to any controvesial/unpopular opinions and beliefs held by friends/family.
Remember Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and loads of other Republican pastors who are embraced by Bush/McCain have said the exact same things as Wright - that America brought 9/11 upon itself because of its "sins". But hypocrisy is the Republican way of life, so this is no surprise.
BoydBoy189: Republicans, by speaking at Bob Jones University and associating with Falwell who spoke of the sins of homosexuals was done in order to pander to a racist, religious right wing of the party, and I 100% denounce this. Obama feels Pastor Wright's anger and racist paranoia, because he needs to appeal to a wing of the Democratic base which views blacks as victims and makes excuses for them to pander for their vote. Will you denounce Pastor Wright and admit Obama made poor judgement?
Is the Reverend Doctor's comments more important to the American people than the war, healthcare and the economy? Btw Last time I checked Jeremiah Wright wasn't running for President.
Obama extemperaneous speech is the most inspiring speech I ever heard. Though great speech's Churchill's "We will meet them on the beach with pitchforks ...", and Martin Luther King's, "I have a dream," Obama's speec outreached the eloquence of King or Churchill!
Well done Obama! The Greatest live speech I've heard in my life time of 50 years. Unfortunately you are dealing with America where undereducated and underinformed is still majority, they would not understand your point, it would all backfire:(
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A great speech? He tried to equate his Pastor's paranoid racist and anti-American screeds as the moral equivalents of his Grandma and Ferraro. If Obama was truly the uniter he purports to be he would have denounced Wright for his misguided anger as blacks inflict their own hardships, see 70% illegitimacy rates, and if any "white man" is to blame, it is the white liberal who enables irresponsible behavior with bigoted programs like welfare and affirmative action due to their irrational guilt.
HISTORICAL? HA! this speech will be no more historical than the shit I flushed down the toilet this afternoon. A historic speech would be, the gettysburg address, Kennedy's inaugural speech, martin luther king jr.'s I have a dream speech, FDR's Pearl harbor speech etc.
Oh, ya got me. I think i'm going to go cry. Hey I have an idea, come back when youre all grown up and know something more than a couple of naughty words.
"Let's keep in mind what the real issues are - race and religion. The war, the economy, healthcare, the environment, and foriegn policy are all secondary to the importance of whatever the scandals the media can report on. America, let's keep this nigger unemployed and roll out as much hate as we can..." - Hillary Clinton
Obama is a racist supporter. And now he has to deal with this Pastor Meeks jackass also. Hahahaha....Your vote for Obama is a vote for a racist. Read Obama's book if you don't agree.
Reno, when your words and sentiments are compared to Obama's, your voice is truly ugly. May you know the meaning of nobility and grace. And compassion too.
Err, we've just had 8 years of a mentally subnormal President prsteve11, I think we're all friggin experts on who is wise and intelligent by now. I don't understand Americans that don't want Obama - don't you want the world to like you? You like being public enemy number one with crazy men in the White House running around the world like a bull in a china shop? Geez.
Don't care what the "world" wants. It's what American citizens want that matter. What is good for us. Mexico wants us to open our borders to anyone. Lot of good that does us. And now we have a racist supporter wanting to be president. And you think it's ok.
The talk show hosts trying to scare the simple minded and uniformed hopefully will not work. The way he addressed race in this country (a very hard subject to speak on and not offend someone (right Bill O'Reilly) pinpointed the issue honestly. Something I have never heard from a politician before. I do feel hopeful about America listening to him. God willing he will be our next President.
That is an historic speech if ever I saw one. Seems the Reverend Wright 'controversy' only served to help Obama come out looking stronger and more inspirational than ever before.
The only thing I can say the Man Is Bad. Anytime you dont stoop to someones level to get your point across you are a good person. Life is already filled with hate and dispear we dont need a President thats like that also to get a point across. No matter who ends up in office-they will not be able to change things.Unless people change the way they think.
I am an African-American Pastor who is s huge supporter of Hillary Clinton but I must say that I will be honored to have Barack as President. This was a very moving and honest speech!
I shan't waste my time responding to the ignorance that I have read here...so sad.
You are an example of a simple truth: that, despite the negative things in your surroundings, YOU can CHOOSE to do the things that make our society a place worth living in and fighting for... while others choose to stagnate and not move on.
I have racist friends and mentors. Does that make me racist? If my dad cites black people's propensity to laziness using the "N word," does that make me racist? I have respect my dad greatly, but I'm voting for an N word in November. We are not the people around us, we are ourselves and can't be blamed for what others say.
Besides, at least he acknowledges the fact that racism is around and doesn't just dismiss it as politically incorrect to talk about race issues.
-How can Obama be racist when he has black white and Asian family members? Does he hate his mother...his father...his step-dad...his grandmother?
-By your own admission, you believe wholeheartedly in your KKK pastor! So what's it like at your charismatic KKK church? How many in-bred retards praise the lord and pray for white power? Y'know what, don't answer that... I don't need to know!
- Dude... aaaaw, nevermind... Fuck you and the animals that spawned your stupid ass!
My comment regarding the KKK was hypothetical, genius. Read my entire post.
You're a waste. And a spineless coward. In my presense you would cower and not utter a word. Typical pussy. But I appreciate you getting this upset. hahaha...
I didn't vote for Obama, but you don't get what he is saying, and that is unfortunate. He honors everyone with this speech by appealing to our better angels rather than pandering to our worst traits.
He never said "he didn't know." In fact, if you'd watched the speech he just gave, he addressed everything clearly, honestly, and in no uncertain terms. Please educate yourself before commenting.
He said he had never heard the pastor make these types of remarks in his presence. He said that recently, not in this speach. He also spoke to his pastor about a year ago talking about how they would have to seperate if Obama got close to the nomination because of philosophies. I've heard the recording of Wright stating this. Now, I suggest you do much more research before making incorrect comments here again. And go read Obama's book. Then tell me he has nothing against whites. Thankyou.
Y'know what? I will look-up the info you referred to. Seriously, I will...
...but I must say, I suspect a few too many blows to the head during those sparring matches with your fellow ninjas-in-training at the $2-combat-temple down the street!
He is a puppet for the "globalists" CFR & AIPAC. Educate youself. Find out who is funding this terd. LEARN!!! You want more war and less freedom? A vote for McCain, Hillary or your silver tongued Obama is a resounding yes. They're working on the SAME team. LEARN!! Find out how many CFR foreign policy puppet masters are backing them. LOOK IT UP! Learn what the CFR is!! I bet you all have no F'ing clue. Just type it in and watch a video at the very least. He who pays the piper calls the tune.
I haven't searched the CFR and I don't plan to because quite frankley we still have to vote for who we think is the best candidate. And since it's only McCain, Hillary and Obama really in the running now, I'll take my chances with Obama personally. Unless you're suggesting that nobody votes at all.
Your choice of language in dealing with a SERIOUS subject tells a lot about you. You may disagree with Obama, but try to be respectful to people have a differing opinion. Somehow your diatribe reminds me a lot of the John Birch Society. Are you?
I love how this is labeled a "historical" speech when it was given yesterday! hahaha! You must support this guy only a supporter of this fraud would be so condescending.
This speech was given under duress, Wise up. He was silent for 20 years. Why now? He got caught in a fire storm, (his words). I don't believe Obama is a racist, I think he is an opportunistic politician and a socialist. And I don't think Obama gives a fig about the hate Wright dished out over the years as long as it came with a big fat side of VOTES! He's just a vote whore like the rest of them. The more things CHANGE, the more they stay STATUS QUO.
He's distancing himself now because it's election time!
These racist Obama supporters are just that. Racist supporters. Plum, we're dealing here with liberal racist Obama supporters. Fortunately they are in the minority, except, it seems, on this site. Take that into account when talking to people here. :-) And good luck.
Agreed! This thread is dominated by Obama worshippers. I was offended by the speech because he so arrogantly excused bitter, chip-on-the-shoulder blacks for things like Reverend Wright has said and done.
the u.s.a is obviously rascist! seriously, white people look on minorities differently! since the 19th century, rascism has lived. some people have fought against it but the whites act like its nothing.
He wants to talk to every world leader....He can't even talk to his own Pastor about these statements for 20 years. And he allowed his family to hear this stuff !!
Someone who is a mixture of races can speak about the issues of race. He's black and white. But for some who stick their heads in the sand over race can't hear what he's saying. Not a shock.
How is it that Barack or any human for that matter is being held accountable for the actions of others he associates with? That's the same ideal that put our country in this position to begin with. I applaud him for addressing the race issue head on and while his words are inspirational, they bear no influence on my vote this coming november. He in my eyes, regardless of color or religious affiliation, is still the man for the job.
not judge Rev. Wright until you have walked a mile in his shoes. If your mother said something that you disagree with would you disown her? Slavery,Jim Crow, and Hurricane Katrina happend because of rich WHITES are
pure evil. You white people teach hate from 1generation to the next. When you learn to love your fellow citizens as the bible says and stop voting AGAINST you own enterest.
A hurricane happened because of rich whites???? Wow - your argument was only semi-moronic up until that point upon which it became totally ignorant. You may also want to ask yourself who the slaves were purchased from. Come on - none of us our innocent here.
Yes, why not? Obama is a racist supporter, and some of these nuts don't care or are too stupid. So yes. A hurricane happened because of rich whites. Fits right in to this comment section. :-)
The outcome of Hurricane Katrina "happened because of rich whites." The siphoning off of money earmarked to repair the levies before, the appalling lack of funding for rescue and repair after, the violation of civil rights on the ground during and after, and more.
he sumarised it best at the end with a story. and the story is about love for your fellowmen.
nothing really revolutionary about love except that you need someone who is candid and honest enough to say it without sounding cheezy or manulipative. someone who has..
deep insight and clear vision of his leadership. somone with living water flowing from deep within to a thirsty world. good luck.
this man's words are not about him. this race is not about him. he is about doing business in the government "of the people, by the people, for the people". he has organized a grassroots movement unlike any in recent history. he speaks with eloquence, truth, heart and soul. if anyone does not hear his voice and more importantly, his message that applies to us all, those individuals have hearts, minds and souls too closed to feel and empathize, suffering from the "us" vs "them" syndrome.
Change thy self, you Politicians and Holy Men. Obama wants us to start a dialogue that will begin to address the racial issues in this country! Yet he squandered 20 years of opportunity to start that very conversation with Rev. Wright, his friend, mentor and pastor! Rational people listened to his speech with a question they wanted answered, how on Earth could you associate with such a powerful biggot? Instead we got a civics lesson on race relations.
I am very sorry for your bias and you fabricating the fact and his honest speech. He questions the divisive division and talk about race and asks for work on common problems (war, health care, and global warming) among different ethnic groups in US. I believe he is right. The only way to solve the race and poverty problem is to be united around a common goal.
Why so angry? Why so cynical? Just respect him for at least trying to adress an issue that Americans incur or at least think about daily, without it ever being adequately publicized or confronted. Lets not try to diminish Obama or his speech, instead lets try to make a better America. Its fine to be a Republican, or to be for Mccain or Bush, but lets not try and make all dems our Enemy. Lets not try to make obama be a racist
When you get your mind and thinking out from that dark, small, 1 inch X 1 inch box... let us know... so that we can rejoice over the fact that progress is possible! :-D
And progress is possible when people stop supporting racism. My KKK pastor said so. You poor hypocrites. Hahaha...go ahead, vote for your boy. Racist supporter. Have a good day.
I'm a christian conservative, WM31, I voted Gore in 2000, 9/11 hit I voted.. Bush in 2004 married to a beautiful black woman with two kids, maybe I'm biased, I haven't seen anyone speak with such authority and leadership, only a couple names come to mind Lincoln, Kennedy, King, and Jesus. He's sealed my vote and I was leaning toward McCain.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Is it me, or was this speech all about how he is a martyr and he's the best nominee because of his background? What he said is true yet he made it sound like he was the best choice just because he is (half) black.
I don't buy that at all. I find that this speech is about moving forward. This is the first time in quite a while that I've heard a speech that dealt more with the issue than with the candidate. Don't get me wrong he did his fair share of stumping for himself, but the overall content of the speech was about far more than a single individual.
Obama had no problem throwing his white Grandma under the bus in order to save his campaign. I'm sure she'll be really happy to hear that Obama shared her private conversation with him, with the public.
Okay so it's okay for her to hold a prejudice, but not Wright? Hmmmm... He never threw her under the bus. He did that to prove a point which many people needed to hear.
If you didn't catch that point then you are just looking for a reason to jump on him.
And that's not me playing the race card. That's a fact.
There are those who recognize the potential for a paradigm shift in our country's politics, and those who don't. The one thing I know is that all the mud-slinging cynicism our political system can muster will never be able to touch the part of my soul that Barack Obama has. I know I am not alone. The uglier it gets, the harder I will campaign for this man. I will follow him to the gates of Hell if he asks me, and I will pray for all those who fight against us. BTW...I thought he was Muslim ;-)
i know, right;) when i heard about the wright tapes coming out, my first thought was "well, at least they won't be able to claim he's a closet muslim-fascist anymore." i'm volunteering on the campaign to, brother...i've never been more inspired to be a part of it than i am right now...to my mind, what he said today only confirms and makes stronger everything i'd only *hoped* he might be before today.
What do you possibly have to lose by voting for this man? the economy is at an all time low, forclosures, food and gas an all time high. for this you praise Bush. Unless you're a rich republican you're suffering with me my white brothers and sisters. Don't let the media convince you we are better off because John or Hillary are white. Just try something, someone else. Please!!!!!
Every politician talks about "uniting people" ..for the first time, though, I actually believe this guy actually means it and can do something about it. Not to mention, he's got the balls to bring the real stuff to the surface and talk about it in a real way. about fucking time if you ask me. like it or not, we're in this world together...we all have faults, things to complain about, etc., but we're in it together. i'm a white middle class guy and i'll take hope over angry cynicism any day.
abso-fucking-lutely. it's nice to hear that there are people out there-- especially former bushies-- open to changing their minds. we're all in a state of evolution, man. it's just being able to admit you've made mistakes that separates the real men from the cheneys and the bushes of the world. cheers!
Final comment. I sincerely believe that this man can restore a since of Americas self. I became a registered Democrat today..after 30 years of voting the straight Republican ticket. Its not important for me to agree with him on all the issues. After 8 years of Bush..whom i voted for twice..i just want a president who says what he sincerely believes to be true. I think we saw something amazing today. Now i pray for his safety. I will be proud to call him my president..which will be a nice change.
it's a non-issue dude. focus on something else...can you honestly listen to what he's saying and still claim he hates white people?? the point is to take that anger on both sides, show what's wrong with it, and learn from it. ultimately in hopes of creating a better world. we've all got faults and have said dumb ass things. you can't solve anything until you're willing to sit down at the table and hear what the other side has to say...this may be the one guy who can pull that off.
I agree. But why not? Maybe he is just a dreamer, maybe no one can make this country better, maybe the President is just a figure head with no real power to unit or change anything, just take credit for when things are good and blame when they are bad. But what if he is right? I honestly like both Hillary and Mcain, I think either could do a decent a job as President, but I look at how much Obama has inspired people just by running, what if he could do more inside the oval? He should get a shot

What a great speech. He tells it like it is. You can even see from some of the more ignorant comments below that there is an inherent racial divide in this country.
People need to take a step back from their own experience and realize we are all in this together. We all suffer injustices and we all want whats best for our loved ones. If we work together we can achieve anything.
From his outer personality, Obama reminds me of Lincoln. However, I do feel that up to this point, he is all words and that he will never be able to prove to America that he does have actions accompanying those beautiful words unless we give him a chance. Since America is in a bad state right now (wonder why...cough), are we willing risk it and give him a chance? I'm not sure if hope is what we need right now, maybe after everything settles down first.
Got to pay attention people. He clearly shows how ALL races have issues that are discussed privately that need to be out in the open. America is losing globally if we all work together we can be great. Falling pray to ignorance and fear has distracted us to the point that the economy is in ruin and we are in a unjust war while big companies are getting rich. Hillary and McCain will not push us forward as they do not have Americas interest at heart just their own egos and interest in mind.
Cannot ever imagine this kind of Honesty and Intellect from either Hillary or McCain.
Obama is truly a blessed man and his life is a genuine american story. Holding him responsible for others deed and words would be making the same mistake his pastor made.
Open your arms and embrace your brothers sisters.
One nation under God. God Bless America and God Bless Barack.
He is our only hope. He didnt even have notes, it was all in his head! amazing, the story about the girl who ate relish and mustard sandwiches was amazing. I was listening to the radio and people were calling up in tears crying.
A brave and magnificent speech. This was not the vague speeches I have heard from him during the campaign, but words of great substance which directly address the immediate issue of his relationship with his pastor, and then inspires us to forge a different path to solve our problems, together.
I didn't vote for Obama, but I have too agree what was said on cnn, " That was probably the most important speech on race since MLK's Ihave a dream ". The speech had alot of substance to it. He said exactly what the nation needed to hear whether they liked it or not. I hope we can go forward in this area, by God's Grace.
he gave balck people a free pass on being racist. and pandered to the one group that does not vote for him regularly, white middle class. look closely

Imagine now that this happens to you several times every day because of your skin color.
theparadox1083 3 years ago
theparadox1083: Racism is NOT a major factor in society today. The biggest problem facing the black community today is 70% illegitimacy and sub-50% graduation rates. These are "self-inflicted" hardship where the individual is to blame, unless you want to lay part of the blame on a society of liberals who "enable" irresponsible behavior via excuses and social programs.
defzepled 3 years ago
defzepled, your idea of "self-inflicted" hardship is seriously flawed. In this country the ceiling of success for most people is determined at birth. If you're born upper middle class and white, it's hard to succeed. Now imagine your father abandons you, your Mom works 3 jobs just to put food on the table, and your major friend base is criminals and drug dealers. Then factor in that everyone treats you like a criminal or a deadbeat regardless of what you do, and you're supposed to succeed?!?
cutesd 3 years ago
cutesd: Wow, what a defeatist attitude you preach. Do you call that hope? Of course people who are born into poor situations beyond their control will have a tougher time succeeding and will have to work that much harder. So your message is give up, throw in the towel, everything is predestined for you so curl up in a fetal position and suck your thumb? Wow, that is very sad commentary on your part.
defzepled 3 years ago
defzepled: you've completely misconstrued my comment. I'm merely pointing out that what this country needs is more support, more opportunity and less of the "tough love" routine that doesn't help anyone. Also we need less naivete from the whites in this country who just want to stop talking about racism.
cutesd 3 years ago
cutesd: No, you are wrong. Boys and young men need a father figure who cares and practices discipline. "Tough Love" helps many people, while "mollycoddling" does not. All people are inherently lazy to differing degrees, so some people are more than happy to get something for nothing. A swift kick in the butt is needed sometimes, while a bleeding heart liberal does poorly behaving people no good, other than to resolve the cognitive dissonance that may exist in their own minds.
defzepled 3 years ago
Giving people opportunity and support is not "mollycoddling" and labeling people "lazy" when you don't know their circumstances is prejudicial.
We've been giving people a "swift kick in the butt" for the past 70 years and the world's not better for it.
Time for a new approach.
cutesd 3 years ago
When I say people are inherently lazy, that is regardless of race, color or creed. cutesd, you just don't get it, do you? A new approach would be "tough love" and not the "nanny", "entitlement" state that has ruined so many lives. People need incentive to work, to restore their dignity and become self-sufficient, contributing members of society. Patronizing people with excuses is bigotry.
defzepled 3 years ago
These people HAVE incentive to work it's called supporting a family. And working at a McDonalds doesn't bring a whole lot of dignity or money.
You say these people should go to college. HOW? If you have no money and can't afford the SAT classes that would get you a scholarship, & even community college is expensive how are you supposed to get a higher education? No college means no good job, no good job means you live in the ghetto. So I ask you, how are these people supposed to succeed?
cutesd 3 years ago 2
I can do it, other people can do it. I took out student loans and worked 20 hours a week to go to college. It took years to pay off those college loans. Please be careful not to short-change people. Of course some people grow up on tougher circumstances and have to work that much harder to succeed in life, but preaching a defeatist attitude and making excuses is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
defzepled 3 years ago 3
def: and I suppose you're going to go through and hand pick all the people who are worthy of help and all those who aren't?
You cannot arbitrarily decide who is worthy and who isn't. Your view is so narrow you only consider the aftermath, not everything that came before it. Lots of circumstances lead to children out of wedlock, drugs, gangs, etc. We should be examining the circumstances that lead to undesirable aftermaths and seek to change those circumstances thus affecting future aftermaths.
cutesd 3 years ago
cutesd: What leads to children out of wedlock, drugs and gangs is irresponsible behavior and that is their own fault unless you want to lay some blame on a society of liberals who "enable" irresponsible behavior. There is plenty of opportunity out there, but people have to act responsibly and work hard, and some people have to work harder than others. Racism is not a factor in succeeding today and Obama's rise is living proof of that.
defzepled 3 years ago
def: you're trying to make narrow an issue that is infinitely large and it shows lack of understanding.
Working hard will only get you so far. When I was 16 I worked at a restaurant where many people supported their families on $5 an hour. Those people worked HARD but they were never going to succeed. And these people were married, didn't do drugs and were not in gangs ... they were poor and they were Hispanic.
I am white and I succeeded because I had opportunity and support.
cutesd 3 years ago
cutesd: Please get off your "irrational guilt trip". Keep in mind that a disproportionate number of blacks are not failing due to racism, but rather by the poor decisions they make.
defzepled 3 years ago
You should be blaming illegitimacy rates on poor sex education and lack of access to birth control. You think this is not a class thing? Rich people have health insurance so they can afford things like birth control and abortions. They're not smarter or more responsible, they just have the means to take care of it.
So yeah, let's take away all their social programs too, because kicking people when their down always helps.
cutesd 3 years ago
def: Obama succeeded because he was raised in an environment that provided support and opportunity to him ... which is precisely my point. It is environment that determines more than anything to how much you will succeed.
Someone who is born middle class is more likely to stay middle class, someone born in the ghetto is more likely to stay in the ghetto. And it just so happens that most people in the middle class are white and most people in the ghetto are minorities.
cutesd 3 years ago
cutesd: I agree and why is that so? Who made that environment, the rich white man? No the individual did! How you might ask. By having children out of wedlock and making other poor decisions. People have to work hard to break the vicious cycle of irresponsible behavior. It is much "easier" to blame others, but people of true character overcome and succeed.
defzepled 3 years ago
cutesd: Life isn't fair. Some people are smarter than others, some people have to work harder than others, some people are pro athletes, some people get lucky breaks, but that is life. That is the diversity of life. All people are inherently equal, but our diverse traits and charteristics, the decisions we all make and so forth lead us down differing paths.
defzepled 3 years ago
All people are inherently equal, the circumstances under which they are raised are not. I'm not suggesting giving anyone anything, I'm suggesting we actually give them a chance to try ... which they currently do not have.
And what do you suggest society does with all the people who've already made the "bad decisions"? Just wait for them to die?!?
People who you say have fucked up their lives are just screwed and that's that? Guess where our criminal element comes from?
cutesd 3 years ago
cutesd: It is a scientific "fact" that households that don't have a mother and "father" are much more likely to live in poverty, turn to crime and repeat the cycle. Each individual has the "power" to make their own destiny, and some people do need help, and I am willing to help those that are willing to help themselves, but those who make choices to have children out of wedlock, deal drugs, skip school and so forth make their own bed and I have zero sympathy for that ilk.
defzepled 3 years ago
All you have to do is examine the demographics of poverty in the United States to see that racism still exists.
cutesd 3 years ago
cutesd: A disproportionate number of blacks do live in poverty, see a 70% illegitimacy rate for a big part of your explanation. Don't blame anyone else for this as the individual has the "power", but you could argue that a society of liberals "enable" irresponsible behavior with their excuses and handouts.
defzepled 3 years ago
If I were running for president and I had friends or family who made public comments that I didn't agree with (no matter how much I cared about them) it would be very, very foolish of me to NOT distance myself.

BoydBoy189 3 years ago 2
BoydBoy189: Republicans, by speaking at Bob Jones University and associating with Falwell who spoke of the sins of homosexuals was done in order to pander to a racist, religious right wing of the party, and I 100% denounce this. Obama feels Pastor Wright's anger and racist paranoia, because he needs to appeal to a wing of the Democratic base which views blacks as victims and makes excuses for them to pander for their vote. Will you denounce Pastor Wright and admit Obama made poor judgement?

A great speech? He tried to equate his Pastor's paranoid racist and anti-American screeds as the moral equivalents of his Grandma and Ferraro. If Obama was truly the uniter he purports to be he would have denounced Wright for his misguided anger as blacks inflict their own hardships, see 70% illegitimacy rates, and if any "white man" is to blame, it is the white liberal who enables irresponsible behavior with bigoted programs like welfare and affirmative action due to their irrational guilt.

not judge Rev. Wright until you have walked a mile in his shoes. If your mother said something that you disagree with would you disown her? Slavery,Jim Crow, and Hurricane Katrina happend because of rich WHITES are
pure evil. You white people teach hate from 1generation to the next. When you learn to love your fellow citizens as the bible says and stop voting AGAINST you own enterest.
sps8472 3 years ago
A hurricane happened because of rich whites???? Wow - your argument was only semi-moronic up until that point upon which it became totally ignorant. You may also want to ask yourself who the slaves were purchased from. Come on - none of us our innocent here.
TahoeJoe06 3 years ago
Yes, why not? Obama is a racist supporter, and some of these nuts don't care or are too stupid. So yes. A hurricane happened because of rich whites. Fits right in to this comment section. :-)
reno93535 3 years ago
Yes I just realized the error in my thinking - it is obvious that hurricanes are caused by rich whites. Just like malaria is caused by poor blacks.
TahoeJoe06 3 years ago
The outcome of Hurricane Katrina "happened because of rich whites." The siphoning off of money earmarked to repair the levies before, the appalling lack of funding for rescue and repair after, the violation of civil rights on the ground during and after, and more.

he sumarised it best at the end with a story. and the story is about love for your fellowmen.
nothing really revolutionary about love except that you need someone who is candid and honest enough to say it without sounding cheezy or manulipative. someone who has..
deep insight and clear vision of his leadership. somone with living water flowing from deep within to a thirsty world. good luck.
w1secr8k 3 years ago
this man's words are not about him. this race is not about him. he is about doing business in the government "of the people, by the people, for the people". he has organized a grassroots movement unlike any in recent history. he speaks with eloquence, truth, heart and soul. if anyone does not hear his voice and more importantly, his message that applies to us all, those individuals have hearts, minds and souls too closed to feel and empathize, suffering from the "us" vs "them" syndrome.
jjill21 3 years ago 2
Change thy self, you Politicians and Holy Men. Obama wants us to start a dialogue that will begin to address the racial issues in this country! Yet he squandered 20 years of opportunity to start that very conversation with Rev. Wright, his friend, mentor and pastor! Rational people listened to his speech with a question they wanted answered, how on Earth could you associate with such a powerful biggot? Instead we got a civics lesson on race relations.
plum26754 3 years ago
I am very sorry for your bias and you fabricating the fact and his honest speech. He questions the divisive division and talk about race and asks for work on common problems (war, health care, and global warming) among different ethnic groups in US. I believe he is right. The only way to solve the race and poverty problem is to be united around a common goal.
HumanNoX 3 years ago
These nuts don't care that he supports a racist. And he always has. But now that he's gotten this far he claims to seperate himself. How ironic.
reno93535 3 years ago 3
Why so angry? Why so cynical? Just respect him for at least trying to adress an issue that Americans incur or at least think about daily, without it ever being adequately publicized or confronted. Lets not try to diminish Obama or his speech, instead lets try to make a better America. Its fine to be a Republican, or to be for Mccain or Bush, but lets not try and make all dems our Enemy. Lets not try to make obama be a racist
or attack him for trying to do a noble thing.
fivetimev5 3 years ago
Trying to do a noble thing is not what we have here. CYA is what we have here.
At the end of the day, he fell on his sword for his pastor and plunged another into his Grandmothers heart. What a guy.

This is the best speech on race since the "I have a dream". The best speech of my lifetime, granted im only 20. This man is a gift to humanity.

I second that. These people are crazy. Obama can do no wrong. He can support racism and because he's black, it's ok. Too many hypocrites here.

Is it me, or was this speech all about how he is a martyr and he's the best nominee because of his background? What he said is true yet he made it sound like he was the best choice just because he is (half) black.
crazyforvideosdx 3 years ago
I don't buy that at all. I find that this speech is about moving forward. This is the first time in quite a while that I've heard a speech that dealt more with the issue than with the candidate. Don't get me wrong he did his fair share of stumping for himself, but the overall content of the speech was about far more than a single individual.
Syks7 3 years ago 2
The speech had a lot more than that, but his "background" is a huge part of his campaign.
otayyo 3 years ago
Obama had no problem throwing his white Grandma under the bus in order to save his campaign. I'm sure she'll be really happy to hear that Obama shared her private conversation with him, with the public.
filmdirectorny 3 years ago
filmdirectorny:

MMXVI 3 years ago
i know, right;) when i heard about the wright tapes coming out, my first thought was "well, at least they won't be able to claim he's a closet muslim-fascist anymore." i'm volunteering on the campaign to, brother...i've never been more inspired to be a part of it than i am right now...to my mind, what he said today only confirms and makes stronger everything i'd only *hoped* he might be before today.

I wouldn't either. And if David Duke was my pastor and I was like Obama, I would welcome your support.
reno93535 3 years ago
it's a non-issue dude. focus on something else...can you honestly listen to what he's saying and still claim he hates white people?? the point is to take that anger on both sides, show what's wrong with it, and learn from it. ultimately in hopes of creating a better world. we've all got faults and have said dumb ass things. you can't solve anything until you're willing to sit down at the table and hear what the other side has to say...this may be the one guy who can pull that off.

If we work together we can achieve anything.
enkmanphoto 3 years ago
From his outer personality, Obama reminds me of Lincoln. However, I do feel that up to this point, he is all words and that he will never be able to prove to America that he does have actions accompanying those beautiful words unless we give him a chance. Since America is in a bad state right now (wonder why...cough), are we willing risk it and give him a chance? I'm not sure if hope is what we need right now, maybe after everything settles down first.
rainb0wteardr0px 3 years ago

A brave and magnificent speech. This was not the vague speeches I have heard from him during the campaign, but words of great substance which directly address the immediate issue of his relationship with his pastor, and then inspires us to forge a different path to solve our problems, together.
