to cool off a horse after a good ride is to just walk a bit and then a good hosing. just kinda like people, after you run, to slow back your heart rate, you walk...and then hit the showers right? there is no proven info that hosing a horse after riding is bad...
Actually its not. You can ruin your horse's tendons and muscles if they are hot and then suddenly cooled off in water, especially the big muscles in their backs and rumps.
Really? I was unaware of that because me and the other horse people I know hose our horses off if they have been sweating from a ride. You know, to cool them down. Also if it has been a hot day we hose down the horses to cool them off even when they are just grazing in the paddock.
Do you mean the thoroughbreds after they have raced? because these horses in the clips don't look like they have done enough work for it to cause any problems.
Its true.I do competitive trail riding, and part of that includes sponging your horse's neck down down at water crossings, and completely at the end.You have to be exceedingly careful to not get hot rump muscles with cool water. At most tracks and some barns there is warm water for hosing the horses down when they are hot, which is fine, if the air temp isnt cool.Go jog a mile, and jump in a pool right afterward. It sucks, Ive done it. If they're not working, its OK to hose 'em down all the way.
Thanks for that, it's very worthwhile to know. If the horse has been cooled down at a walk and is it then to okay to hose the sweat of? We only have cold water at out agistment center.
You're welcome. Yes, its OK to hose them when they're all cooled out, provided its nice and warm outside (or inside if your barn is heated) low 70ies or higher. If its like 45 or 50 degrees outside, I wouldn't do it at all. But maybe I am being conservative. My horse doesnt sweat alot when its that cool anyway, and I havent had any issues yet during the long, unbathed winter months. Good luck :)

daintyhyena, it is proven that hosing a horse's hot tired muscles immediately after riding does not cause cramping or any muscle or tendon damage.
