My son drives an MATV in the Herat Province... On December 11 he hit an IED and distroyed it with his entire team escaping with limited injuries,,, Not sure that would have been the case it he was in a HMMWV
They edited out the response to the milage querry ... Does anyone know what the typical milage (on Afghan roads) is ? I understand that fuel is extremely expensive, in theater, and I am wondering what the generals are thinking/saying about the fuel and Maint. costs.
... Is this thing what the doctor ordered for Afghanistan? Was it not designed for Iraq?
... Just curious if this vehicle will be used much, after USA "wins", and/or leaves.
@phrankus2009 this thing was designed specifically for afghanistan. my cousin's unit has used and continues to use them extensively. my unit uses them more than any other mrap we have available, as they're better suited to the harsh terrain that afghanistan is known for. even in the south, there're very few roads suitable for driving any sort of armored vehicle on. i have heard rumblings that this vehicle will eventually replace the antiquated humvee of the previous decade.
@mdb81 you can keep on making the trucks bigger but the hajis will just make the bombs bigger too...hummers are faster and easyer and you can't realy use these in a urban environment...
@anteracmacash cant man. the HMMWV cant go the places this does. 16 travel is great. its powerful. it is not meant to replace the HMMWV BTW. this is an afgan vehicle.
@padrinoel how is this big thing supposed to be as versatile as a HMMWV ?? I mean the bigger they get the harder it is to drive the...that's why the americans have given us those huge ass mraps cause you can't drive them for shit and they easily turn over...
@padrinoel what ??well I guess I've learned something new today :D:D
I saw on the Pentagon channel aout a year ago and they said that the M-ATV will be the replacement but the SLTV looks waaaaaay better...anyway still better then the Willys Jeep :/
@anteracmacash trust me man. i just took a 40 hour class on the MATV. they could not express enough this is not a replacement. the JLTV is in its final stages of testing right now.
It still doesnt change the fact that the DASH is too big and top heavy for the mountain roads in afghanistan. And the suspension throws your everywhere on these rocky trails they call roads.
Based on a year of using both the standard MRAP and the Maxx Pro MRAP these look much much much improved on the off road handling. The standard MRAP were useless off road. I'm sure its an acceptable trade off but I'm sure with the decreased road clearance these are not quite as defended from deep berried IEDs. That's to be expected.
What do you consider standard MRAP? There are five basic variants, and each variant has at least two types within it. On another note, the MATV still offers blast protection through the v-hull, even being closer to the ground
yea these babys are made in Oshkosh, WI at Oshkosh Truck. My Uncle owns a welding company where they are mounting rails and other things the government wants done to them. I have taken a ride in this thing and it is a beast. Some of the features on these things are AMAZING. I love these things!!!
Huge? The thing is less than 25K GVW, just as the DoD asked for. Th V-hull really jacks up the height, but helps protect from IEDs.... Oh Well, the gov't just ordered 2200 of them.
Too bad they edited out the answer to ''how does this thing do on fuel''.

"nice big clearance" Yea, because it's empty and you don't have ammo, weapons, other supplies crammed in every corner of it, along with your kit.

The MATV is excellent for the new age of the MRAP but it will never be a HMMWV.
