Other than throwing the bow and scratching the hell out of the violin, the music is there though. He goes out of the line because he created a style of his own.
And you are?? I play this piece myself, actually. I heard a lot of performances on this piece. From other students and very famous violinists. My teacher on the conservatory gave me the advice to watch this video. Not because it's fantastic, but just to have a good laugh... Have you got any idea what's in the score? I can tell you it's a whole different piece.
OK I have to be a littlebit more mild: he is very old and he used to be a great violinist. This on the other hand ISN'T! I'm sorry...
haha..i acturlly agree in some points. I am playing this piece right now. I think he veriates the rytmical to much (!!).. but wow, what an musician! Sound and everyting..
@jellantsje honestly, im looking at the score right now, and he is playing this piece just as it is written. (for those who say he missed the pizzicato at 1:03, he plays it as the score is marked, as piano.) he is a master violinist, and any one could aspire to play with just a fraction of his grace and elegance. Furthermore, the rhythm is NOT supposed to be perfect, what would Bach's violin sonatas sound like with perfect rhythm? Like a robot. Btw, jellantsje, tell your teacher kiss my ass.

This is awful! I don't mind if it's not perfect, but if you know the score you will see that he is faking his way through the piece. I laughed my guts out watching this video, so ridiculous! It is sad though for the wonderful music of Bartok...
This is a live performance of what some people consider the most technical violin sonata ever written.
It's in tune, he doesn't hit all the notes (keep in mind that Horowitz himself doesn't hit all the notes in a live performance of Rachmaninoff Concerto), and it's convincing.
I'm not the biggest Ivry Gitlis fan but I rely on his recording of this piece. It is like a bible. So what if this particular performance isn't that great. Every dog has his day.
Well, i wouldn't say it's awful, but i have to agree with you, this is clearly a superficial, almost improvisatory approach to Bartok's score, he plays most of the chords with the same kind of jete' stroke, very narrow dynamic range, almost no variety of sound color, notes...forget it, etc..but let's put it this way, here we have probably the most demanding violin piece of all, a live performance, a violinist who is REALLY old...i admire the effort, Ivry was among the greatest back in the days.
absolutely, Hirshhorns recording is out of this world, not being negative of this great Gitlis performance. Simply one of the great violin solo pieces ever written.
No, what are you talking about?! Bartok only wrote 1 solo violin sonata and this is its first movement, there is no number. He finished it in march 1944, then wrote his third piano concerto, and then died.
wrong do your research before you talk. nos 1 and 2 is with piano number 3 is solo. i no becoz yesterday i went to a concert where all 3 bartok sonatas were performed. think bedfore you speak
It's not a matter of thinking, and I perfectly know that Bartok also wrote 2 Sonatas for violin and piano. But that doesn't mean that they belong in the same series in his compositions catalog. Your answer to nadyart "Number 3 solo sonata" means that this is the 3rd solo sonata, which isn't true, that's why i replied. Solo sonatas and sonatas for violin and piano are always considered different genres in classical music, and cataloged separately in every composer's list of composition.
We have a mis-understanding. I meant, this is Bartok's 3rd Sonata, which is for solo violin. When you say it like that, I am in the wrong. Sorry about that!!
And most of all, professional violinists don't need to "make their research" to find out that Bartok wrote 2 sonatas for violin and piano; it is standard repertoire, and everybody knows and performs them.
I taped Joseph Silverstein playing this off the radio about 20 years ago. To be honest it's a lot more disciplined and clean, though I love Gitlis' approach and flair.
soy mexicano y solo quiero decir que los que dicen que esta "out of tune" son una bola de mocosos que creen que la musica debe de ser para fijarse en los errores de los demas y no en la interpretacion del individuo. las notas y la afinacion van y vienen, el buen arte no. Excellent violinist and excellent artist, he has such a individual way of how to understand the music. Great Violinist , at his age he still playing the violin at the highest levels...Brilliant!!
It's kind of a shame Bartok's representation in concert and recording seem a little skewed toward what Gyorgy Ligeti called his 'conciliatory' works, his more traditionally tonal music. On the other hand I guess his works with nonstandard instrumentation or particularly virtuosic appeal are fairly often performed, but I think rarely understood by conservative audiences as more than a clever diversion or display of technique. His nuances sound 'sloppy and out of tune' to conservative ears.
bartók is one of the greatest composers ever. (and i'm not only saying this because he was hungarian as i'm.)gitlis plays this really great, he really understands the depth, the wisdom, the delicacy but the hard simplicity of bartók's wonderfull piece of works.
The 4th movement, depending on which version you play (I'm pretty sure Menuhin put out an edition without quarter tones that is more often played), might feature quarter-tones, but none in this one. :)
Thanks a million, Adamwas! Fascinating, Gitlis and his divine Guarneri del Gesu. And the great Bartok. So beautiful and admirable. Please keep on posting Gitlis.
I didnt like it... I dont know if it because I´m not listenning to bartok much often lately, but most of it sounds sloppy and out of tune. I´ve seen much better videos from Glitis...
