This was what psychedelic was in New York in the mid 1960s. This was NOT San Franscisco (Dead, Airplane), Los Angeles (Doors, Byrds) or Houston (Elevators). New York was and is rough and the Fugs reflected this perfectly. Ed Sanders (as I recall) was a follwer of Aleister Crowley and Tuli Kupferberg could be seen on streetcorners in the East Village for decades passing out Marxist literature. Bur out of all of this New York rough they came - and they were a LOT of fun!
Those were the times : Free love sounded like a stone gas (until those old demons jealousy and possessiveness reared their heads, forcing us to realize that attempting to make fantasy real didn't always coexist very well with reality). Clap was an expected bummer, but the specter of AIDS hadn't yet appeared to completely ruin things. I dunno if the Fugs were dead serious, or having fun with the concept of sex=freedom, but they sure made it sound like fun, and I get off on how this song rocks.
I knew about "The Fugs" before the Beatles or the Stones. Where was my head at?

I always liked the part about the magic gods in the tree trunks which might explain why I recommend tree hugging to many of my patients.
