So because of that, his thinking was that by solving the strange mysteries of the town, he could some how "bring salvation" to a "demon" town.

That's a pretty unfortunate detail all right - one of the few mood breakers in the story. Could have been electric lights just as easily, with better mood. The puzzle to get in the crypt was pretty silly as well. Most of the game's puzzles are pretty down to earth, making this one rather jarring.
