I found the nightlife in Copacabana and Rio in general to be quite disappointing. You really have to be in the know and security is something you need to keep an eye on in Rio. The red light stuff is overdone, there are hookers there the same as all other cities in the world, and it was not at all obvious even in Copacabana. Overall, it's good but over-hyped.

Thanks mate, it was my first time and I could only speak a few words of Portugese, I also had no idea how things worked there and it wasn't what I expected. I was also intimidated by Rio's reputation for violence. I hope to go back to Brazil next year, and maybe I will give Rio another try for a few days as my Portugese is improving and I now have an idea of how the city works. I still find the idea of entering a favela to be a bit concering though as some of those places really have problems

yeah favelas are generally a bad idea, although there is an organised party called favela funk, which is held in one of the night clubs used in the film 'city of god'. the tourists are segregated from the locals, but we broke the barrier and joined in with them, much more fun. Rio is pretty bad for violence, but its usually the people who look like tourists who get robbed. dont flash money/camera's/labels/sunburn and all should be fine. have fun, im glad your gonna give it another shot
