Jackie D tried for many years to have a hit song with her own compositions. It's a little ironic that she finally hit the top ten with the Hal David/Burt Bacharach tune, "What the World Needs Now Is Love".
Something very cool about the Jackie DeShannon clip. The movements of the arms of all the background singers in rythm with hers and the way the stage moved forward and the dark lighting, very cool. Appreciate this song much more now then when it was an over played hit.
I can't believe how much fun this is!! what great stuff!! I have no recollection of watching the program when it aired,,,didn't watch much tv at that point.
Thank god for you tube, It's great to see all these great acts from the 1960's, especially those who never lived through it, you would think The Beatles and the Stones are the only 2 bands that wre around and you do get sick of them and I am a big Beatles fan, it proves other people wre just as talented in my opinion.
"A Lover's Concerto" was written by American songwriters Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, and famously based on Bach's Minuet in G major. BTW, musicologists now believe the original tune wasn't written by Bach himself, but by some dude named Christian Petzold! Boy, you learn something every day.
I love Jackie DeShannon... but I must say, here she is not singing Burt Bacharach's melody exactly right on the verse... the way he wrote it. Strange, because she sings the melody correctly on the original 1965 studio recording.
That's because this is a "live" version instead of her lip synching from a tape. Nothing "strange" about it. No singer sang the song PERFECTLY as compared to their record when they were singing "live".
I saw Jackie DeShannon as one of the opening acts for the Beatles in Detroit in Sept. of 1964 and this young teen was instantly in love...and I still am.
Yup, afternoon show. I saw Gordie Howe with his sons right in front of us. By the way with all the noise from the screaming for the Beatles my buddy and I couldn't hear for ten minutes after the show....but Jackie!!! she mad an impression that has lasted to this day Oh, and she's talented too!.
I tended to confuse Jackie and Dionne for some reason. And confused enough that I thought Jackie was Afr-Amer. In any event, I loved this song and still do. This is great footage.
That's only because you are most likely young and didn't live in that era. Jackie and Dionne, of course, looking nothing alike except but they both are talented. You have very good taste in music. Tons of great female artists from that era.
Perhaps you lived in an area that made it difficult to see them. I grew up in the Detroit area so all the groups visited and, of course, we had the Motown acts. Thank goodness for youtube and these fantastic videos. I recall the corny commercials like the one with Bobby Sherman pitching milk, better than 95% of todays commercials.
@coyotesong Yes I lived in a little town in New Jersey an hour from NY Could see the city across the BAY! Did not get to see many groups but we had Hallabaloo, American Bandstand, Ed Sullivan which brought us the Beatles, and
New York Radio. That was the best and even today we have WCBS 101.1 FM which is all oldies. A great time in our lives. Thanks
Thanx to Fontella Bass, I just won an iPod, a Mp3 and a mp4, a camera and tons of more in a tv-quiz here in Norway. I was the only one who had heard of "Rescue me" in the whole country (5 mill). Thanx grandpa. :D
I have see a version of them in color probably a proffesional archive version where they are dressed in white expensive gowns Supreme's style and one of the girls is pregnant!
You are so right - Actually, this is the onlyest version I've seen of the Toys singing Lover's Concerto live. Thanks to nyrainbow for posting this and for Shindig for taping these treasures, so us Boomers can enjoy then again.
Jackie DeShannon- Beautiful woman, great singer. I love the staging with the Blossoms and Wellingtons on those moving platforms! The Supremes looking as sexy and classy as ever! Great live version of Fontella's hit and she sure is cute in that suit!
This is why youtube is so great- you find out about performers that you may have overlooked otherwise, and there's always someone who can tell you something interesting about that person. Thanks fieryman; I'm going to have to get one of her collections on cd.
I don't understand people who second-guess B. Gordy putting Diana up front. Check the record charts, folks!

no, i was very much alive in that era. I just didn't see singers all that often...it was just hearing them on the radio and listening to dj's.
